So I was standing in line at REI the other day, and I saw a copy of Mountain Bike Magazine, so I decided to grab it because I hadn't read a copy of that in quite some time. I came across the coolest article.
A woman named Marla Streb is in the process of making a resort off the coast in Costa Rica full of single track. The cool thing, it is considered "guilt free" and super economical. This woman and her husband partnered with a company called Timberlake because they didn't have the funds to do this themself, and it is working out great. In the resort there will be a golf course that isn't taken care of by gross chemicals but rather with graywater from the development, it will use solar power, so that's a huge plus right off the bat with the lack of natural gases, and they will have outreach programs to benifit the local community. The cool thing about the single track is that Marla has partnered with IMBA to make sure to build great trails for riding. Why they consider this project to be "guilt free" is because they will be employing locals at "sustainable wages" and a large portion of the money made there will be going back out the door and into educational, cultural and health programs for the locals. There should be 27 miles of single track ready by 2007.
I thought this was pretty cool, and what a wonderful excuse to get out of the US and go to coasta rica. I guess that it would be okay to go there without an excuse too.
