I'm trying to decide to camp or if I can do a day trip to Levis and back. I've heard its a 5 hour drive from Minneapolis from some guy but Mapquest is claiming like 2.5 hours. Can anyone give me a heads up on how long it takes?

Gracias:crazy:

Mapquest is more accurate - I have done it from the Twin Cities in about 2.5 hours. There is a county campground nearby at Lake Arbetus that is a couple of miles from the trailhead if you decide to go that route.

Five hours would definately be the round trip amount.

When it says 30+ miles on the trail page, is that ONE way or ROUND trip? I'd like to do this one in a day, if possible, and wouldn't mind getting up early and being at the trail by 7-8am, and ride all day. If it is 60 miles round trip then I would possibly re-think it. Let me know. Thanks!

Also, when does this trail open? The trail guide said mid-march to early April. Is that incorrect or is it open now?

My late mother-in-law used to live in Merrillan, just 4 miles this side of Levis. It's an easy 160 miles/2.5 hours down there. Get off I-94 at the Alma Center exit, and go east through Merrillan to Levis on WI 121, which turns into WI 95 at the 4-corners in Merrillan.

Use GoogleMaps...it's more accurate.

Ride safe,

You can ride as much or as little as you want, there are a few different routes you can take to make a great day trip.

2.5 hours is accurate, watch out for Wisc. state troopers though.

Trail maps here:

http://www.worba.org/nasti/map.html

Easy to get lost if you have never been there, but you can ride as short or long a loop as you like.

I think the opening dates are on the Worba/Nasti site as well.

According to their website they are also open as of 4/15

What Jeff said. Last time I went our driver got pulled over for doing 12mph over the limit to the tune of $250.

It is a healthy poke for a day trip. Worth crashing at a shiddy motel or a relative's/friend's shangrila if you can swing it and making 2 days of it.

First time I went I got lost, bonked, and made it back to the Shiddies in time to pass out for 12 hours.

Good for me I don't speed. My insurance is just too damn cheap, and the extra few minutes just don't pass my cost/benefit ratio. I talked to a friend and we are planning a trip here this summer sometime, and might even just camp it. Are you allowed to camp on (not on, but near) the trail? If not, does anyone know of any campsites close by? I suppose I could reseach myself, but if someone has some good tips I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

The Clark and Jackson county campgrounds on Lake Arbutus are 3 miles or so south, near Hatfield. Russell County Park is the closest to Levis and has over 240 sites. East Arbutus is the domain of the horse and ATV crowd, but is way larger with 153 sites. West Arbutus is adjacent to Hatfield and has 45 sites. It is a mile or so closer to Levis. Go to http://www.co.clark.wi.us/ClarkCounty/Departments/forestryparks/ParksCamp/Russell.asp or http://www.co.jackson.wi.us/html/forestry/parks.html for campground info.

According to the NASTI website, "Facilities at the Levis mound Trail Center (http://www.worba.org/nasti/maptolevis.htm)include a large parking area and running water and mens and womens bathrooms (located on Fisher Ave, on the east side of Levis mound) . Several picnic areas are located along the trail, and back country camping is allowed by permit (contact the Clark Co. Forestry Department, 715-743-5140)"

There is cheap camping ($5 a night) right at the trail center and trail head. The sites are basic, but you get fire rings and a table. The trail center bathrooms are open year round so you will have hot and cold water and flush toilets. The trails literally start right out of your site. It's a great set up.

FYI: The nearby resteraunt the Stone's Throw has pretty good burgers.
