Summit 2: Return to the Alps

Some will come to Afton Alps for the first time. Some will come because they didn’t get enough of Afton Alps at the 24 Hours of Afton. And some will still be out there a full five weeks after The 24, hacking up ever-smaller bits of lung tissue as they grind up Manhandler for the umpteenth time, not realizing that their chains are broken, their tires are flat, and small woodland creatures have built nests in their chamois. (Is there a plural of “chamois?” Chamoi? Chamoises?)

In any case, Afton Alps is going to see a lot of Minnesota mountain bikers this year, as it’s playing host to the second annual Minnesota Mountain Bike Summit over the weekend of October 7 and 8.

The schedule is…Well, to be perfectly honest, the schedule isn’t. But it is being finalized as we speak. Until then, here’s a sneak peak to tide you over: Group rides, food, bike competitions, more food, MORC’s annual meeting, socialization, fraternization, possibly a controlled conflagration, and most definitely the return of the increasingly popular MORC Film Festival.

We’ll be posting additions, corrections, updates, announcements, rumors, speculation and half-truths vis-à-vis the Summitright here, from now until the event itself.

In the meantime, mark your calendar for October 7-8, and plan on making the second coming of the Summit one for the ages.

Thanks for getting the date out. That helps us plan other things. Also, we should put together some kids event and register it on the IMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day (http://www.imba.com/resources/kids/events.html) site.

Good call, Ryan.

To distinguish the two, we'll refer to the Summit as, "Take an emotionally immature adult mountain biking weekend."

nothing like starting the little brats out on some enormous climbs, although the elevation would be inviting to an adam buck dh course...

So is everything going to be located at Afton? No driving around to different locations?
Like we can set up camp on Saturday, ride all day, consume mass quantities of adult beverages and meat, sleep, wake up, and ride some more?

All Saturday events will take place at Afton Alps, including the opportunity to camp out on Saturday night. We're working on a number of entertaining events to go with the annual meeting during the day on Saturday as well, and there should be plenty of time for open riding.

Sunday, we'll be offering breakfast, then heading over to The Riverview Theater in Minneapolis for The MORC Film Festival, followed by lunch, an awards presentation, and a wrap-up group ride to Theo Wirth.

It'll be just like Woodstock. Hopefully without the mud and the brown acid.

Come on would you rather check out all the cool stuff that will be going on at the Summit or ride the same trail 20 times in a row?

In three years of working on Annual Meetings and Summits, the one thing I've learned is that there isn't a weekend between May and November that doesn't pose some kind of schedule conflict. Things become more difficult towards the latter part of this stretch, when there are also sorts of high profile rides and races (The 24 Hours of Afton, Chequamegon, etc.) that rule out otherwise ideal weekends. The best we can do is pick a date that seems the most open.

I hope that everybody finds a way to get in on at least one day of the Summit weekend. It's very gratifying to see a big group of riders gather together to just enjoy the sport and celebrate our accomplishments. It ranks pretty much at the top of the list of things that make this worthwhile. If you've been to one, you know what I mean. If not, you owe it to yourself to show up and find out.

Wanted to give everyone a heads-up on some important Summit news:

Earlier this week, we received word that we would not be able to offer camping at Afton Alps over the weekend of October 7-8. Seems there was a conflict with various schedules and other events.

This left us with two choices: Hold the Summit on the weekend of October 7-8 as planned, and let people fend for themselves as far as camping or other accomodations. Or move the Summit to the following weekend of October 14-15 and offer camping as planned.

While the decision isn't exactly final, we are strongly leaning toward rescheduling for the weekend of October 14-15. The ability to offer camping accomodations was a big part of the appeal of hosting the Summit at Afton, and it looks like we'll be able to move the Film Festival to the 15th with minimal difficulty.

I will post an official notice on the home page once our decision is finalized. If this causes an inconvenience for anyone planning to attend, I sincerely apologize. This situation came up suddenly, and we're doing our best to work through it.

Thanks.

Well ya know I wouldn't have a problem with that seeing as how I have weddings to shoot on the 7th and 8th but have absolutely nothing going on the weeekend of the 13-15 :)

In other news Waterford Cycles has just responded saying they would like to donate two hoodie sweatshirts on behalf of their two twin cities dealers On One and Behind Bar's bike shops. Now that theres a reason to show up.

I'm excited about the change in dates. It works much better for me, and so far those I have talked too have no issues as well. In fact I briefly mentioned the date change to a few people who would have otherwise missed the summit if it were held on the previously scheduled dates.

We'll be discussing moving the Levis weekend in the appropriate thread.

The Salem Century is still on and with the summit date changed we will have more riders. We are changing the name to the STUPID ride. Salem Trail Utterly Pointless and Insane Day.
