Lately I have been having some trouble with my chain slipping off my front sprocket while I am trying to climb. It generally slips off from the middle ring and some teeth see a bit wore but overall it isn't too bad, is this probably a ring or derailler problem? Thanks.

Sounds like your middle chainring might be worn out. Sometimes it could also be your front derailer isn't on center or ur runin gears that the chain isn't to straight on. Did you get a new chain lately?

Ben,

I have seen and remedied this one a few times. It is most likely (99% sure) a worn front middle ring. Under typical frequent use, these last 2-3 years. A good test is to put pressure on the crank arm (a friend could help here, but not crucial) and observe the chain on the chainring. If you can see daylight between the chain and chainring when pressure is applied, it's almost certain you need a new ring. Are you also getting chain suck? I wouldn't be surprised.

Replacing chainrings is super easy. Me and my brother recently bought some from JensenUSA.com and they arrived in one day! (even with cheap shipping). Your chain may be alright to keep, but be aware that it is also a wear item that must be periodically replaced.

Happy trails!

Ben,

I have a middle ring that you can try out (I think it's an LX level one... so not uber-light, but should be durable). If you want to try it out I'll try and leave it at the bike shop.

I'd also check out the chain for being worn, I have a feeling that if your chainring is worn, that the chain (unless it's new) will be worn.... This could also cause your cassette to be prematurely worn. All of this leads to the ultimate solution to the problem. Singlespeed... you know you want too...

Good luck

Isaac, thanks for the ring I am going to have to check at the shop and hopefully get it taken care of. as for the singlespeed I have an old steel khs frame that is probably going to get converted sometime just for fun. Probably won't be nearly as loud as yours though, with that new rear gear you won't need that bell to make noise.

Oh jeez... I haven't been down there since I got the rear wheel built up, will I need ear plugs? I might have to run to the shop at lunch time....

The ring will be dropped off tonight/this afternoon.
