I'm looking at a week off in the middle of August and would like to put some miles in on some new trails. I'm looking for a good day or two of riding to prep for 24 hours of Afton. Any advice on a trail system to hit would be great. I'm thinking either Levis or the Cable area.....anyone who's ridden both areas and can give advice on which is worth the trip would be great.

Levis has more climbing so it is more like Afton. If you have never been there before makes sure you have a map with you at all times. There are certain ways to avoid major climbing to get to Toads Rd, etc.

Rock Lake and new Hildebrand Loop(CAMBA) allow for more momentum with some good flowing trail and less major climbs making it a better overall trail(IMHO). Ojibiwe is just technical and always pounds me into the ground. This trail is about 13 miles I believe.

I don't know to much about 24 hour riding but, Rock Lake is an ass kicker. I don't know if it's the 90+ degrees we rode in or what. They've really turned that trail into an endurance ride. I think it's 13 or so miles. I'd take the litttle route around a lake (Rock?) it adds a little and it's pretty cool scenery. They've added some a lot of new chunks to this trail to make it almost all singletrack. Also, there's a reason they call it ROCK lake. Someone had some fun with the rocks. Fun bridges, one where I said, "I think I'll stay to the right". The Ojibiwe is another great ride if you have full-suspension. It seems like you bounce from rock to rock to rock. Bonus is that they're by each other and there's great spots for camping all around there. Damn, now I won't to go!:jumpy:

The main site to help you answer this question and anything related to the Cable area is www.cable4fun.com (http://www.cable4fun.com)

The campsite I and many others stay at which is not that close to the trails is Lake Namekagon Campground which is apart of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/cnnf/rec/camping/cheq_11.html
Unfortunately there is not a good campground close to the good trails like Rock Lake and Ojibwe. Lake Owen may have decent trails next to but have never checked them out.

If you plan on riding there for more than 2 days then I recommend buying a season pass to the Cheq Forest which cost $10 at the Cable Chamber of Commerce. Cannot miss the chamber once you turn onto Hwy. "M" it will be on your left.

Enjoy these trails, they are a blast to ride!

Try staying at Island View (just north of the Town Hall Trail head and about 6 miles from Rock Lake). I stayed there about 2 years ago for the Cheq Fat and it was good.

This site is very useful. Check it out!

For the first time, I failed to get in to Cheq Fat so I am still going up there the friday before and will hit the trails friday and saturday. UNLESS I can find someone who got in and is not racing! The search is on!!:jumpy:

Have fun!!
