While riding today I happened to notice that some poor rider (or maybe several) seemed to have lost a dozen or so of his/her/their empty energy gel pouches along the double track ski trail. If you would like them back they are still where you left them scattered along the trails feel free to come retrieve them.
PS- a shout out to the riders in the new toyota sienna that are appearantly as crazy as me to be riding in such nasty heat.

This has bothered me for a while. I was going to start a thread comparing gel pack eating bikers with smokers.
My stereotype is that smokers are slobs, who throw their butts anywhere and everywhere. It's too bad that mountain bikers are beginning to fall into the same stereotype.
There may not be as many gel pack eaters as there are smokers, but those wrappers are way worse than cigarette butts.

There is a guy on MTBR that had some stickers made. He is giving them away if you send hime a self addressed stamped envelope. I feel the same way as Bob about butts and thought he would enjoy this. Sorry for the minor derailment

but in all reality, what if the packets actually fell out of someones pocket, accidentally?
and, did you pick them up off the trail when you came across them? because if you did leave them there, as your post seems to say, then you are just as bad as someone who either actually threw them there OR accidentally dropped them there.
the only point im trying to make is that don't assume someone threw them there. instead, don't assume anything. just pick them up and throw them out and maybe make a nice post like "hey you guys remember to secure your trash on the trail, and please dont be d-bags and liter."
just my thoughts....;)

While it is theoretically possible that they were accidentally dropped, I think the odds are 9999:1 that they were intentionally discarded.
I agree with OP.
Note to litterers: You are not TDF riders, Memorial is not Alpe D'Huez, and there are not fans hiding in the bushes just waiting for the chance to pounce on your litter and claim it as a souvenir.
I'm a gel pack enthusiast with a conscience. Trash on the trails really annoys me as well. Even if I haven't used a gel pack on a ride I still usually end up with a sticky jersey pocket cuz I've picked up some other morons fodder.
That being said, a pile of a dozen or so packs on the trail could be accidental. Normally you just see them scattered randomly.

That is great. I think I'll have to send for one or two. If I'm directly behind someone that throws their butt out the window I usually honk at them as soon as they do it. Not too effective at highway speeds but a guy actually opened his door and picked his butt back up at a stoplight once. My wife doesn't like me doing it. She thinks one of these days someones going to turn around take a shot at me. . . I don't entirely disagree.

I think instead of honking you should go with the heaving hot ash into their window...

I generally don't stop to pick up trash while biking, although I am going to hike the trails and pick up the packs, (I didn't have time to hike yesterday) and I would say that the odds of that many wrappers falling out of people pockets aren't real good, especially when you consider that I saw no wrappers on the more technical singletrack, but they were all on the easier double track portions of trail, where riders tend to multitask a little more (water/gel while they ride). I am not saying it looked like a war zone with junk all over the place it was just a few (15-20) wrappers. I just wanted to bring it up, I would hope that when we are representing our sport we will be on our best behavior. That is the only way we are ever going to make inroads to more trail possibilities (welch, wild mountain, etc.)

My guess would be that most of them were dropped during the recent race. Generally race directors/organizers walk the course after a race to pick up the trash that gets dropped during a race. After steeple we probably picked up 50 gel packs and around a dozen water bottles and a lot of disposable bottled water bottles. Thats the reason for a clean up crew.

It must be a "Troy" thing. I honk and yell out the window at these slime balls. The ones that get me the most are the cheeseheads. Take it back to your own state. When it's as dry as it is this summer, I'm really all over these people. And I love to catch them at stoplights to really give them an ear full. My wife tells me the same thing Troy, women!;)

Okay, I'm a woman  and I'm told to PLEASE stop shouting at butt-flippers at stoplights also! When I see someone with a cigarette, and they drop it, I'm honking my horn. I absolutely cannot stand these people, add to that anyone who tosses anything out their car. Maybe its not good for your blood pressure, but sometimes I think that people just do it because anything goes and no one is tagged for anything anymore *sigh*. But I don't agree that if you pass a pile of debris you are just as bad as the original sinner for not picking it up. I pack and carry trash out when I can, but not always, especially if I'm riding at a good clip.
