SIGN UP OR VOLUNTEER FOR THE 24 HOURS OF AFTON (http://www.24hoursofafton.org)
Less than one month from now there will be suffering aplenty on the hills and bluffs overlooking the St. Croix Valley, compliments of The 24 Hours of Afton. Ask anyone who has ever competed in a 24-hour event, and they will agree. There’s no lack of suffering, but the strain put on mind and body is far outweighed by the high felt when you’ve conquered such an event and relish in the afterglow (or aftermath) with those who have been through the same wringer. The festival atmosphere, the riding, camping and camaraderie all add up to an experience truly unique in this great sport.
If you’ve never done an endurance event, come on out, give it a go and expand your idea of what is possible. Form a team and just have fun with it. That’s what its all about – having fun! Of course, there’s always the option to ride it solo, which involves a Zen-like transcendence of one’s physical body. Now when was the last time you got to experience something like that in a way that wouldn’t make you fail a drug test?
And as if that weren’t enough, proceeds from The 24 Hours of Afton go to MORC, and in turn get put back into the trails. By riding a trail, you’re actually making more trails. Ponder that one in hour 23.
The 24 Hours of Afton takes place on August 25th and 26th at Afton Alps. Get signed up and get all the info at www.24hoursofafton.org.
If you’re not looking to compete but still want to be a part of the atmosphere, volunteering is a great way to do it. It takes a lot of people to run an event like this and it ends up being more fun than work. For some reason, people tend to be a lot funnier and less demanding at 3:00 a.m. Anyway, we’ll be looking for people to help with set-up and registration Friday afternoon, timing and organization throughout the event then awards and clean-up on Saturday evening.
If you would like to pitch in and help out for a few hours or the entire event, post here (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=17707).
Do it as rider. Do it as a volunteer. But whatever you do, do it for the trails.
