I'm heading to St.Cloud for a wedding over Labor Day weekend with my girl and hoping to make the trip worthwhile (haha). I want to ride Milaca and maybe the Jail Trail. She's pretty inexperienced and I'm wondering how a beginner will fair on these trails. I can get her to tough it out through Hartley and some of the other stuff here in Duluth, but she's not too keen on riding much distance when its really rooty. Sounds like Milaca is more tech than physically tough?

Milaca is both tech and physically tough. the trail is 14 miles or so with alot of choices (or areas to get turned around and lost in) the trail has tons of rock, roots, twisting singletrack, crazy climbs and downhills. it is not quite the trail I'd take most novice riders on...unless they want a good workout. However if you go with her you can stick to areas that are flat and rolling with little to no problem.
the jail trail is something I'm taking my wife on for her initiation into trail riding. they have a beginner, advanced and expert section so we can choose which we are interested in. Have fun

Cool, thanks for the advice. I think I'll ride Milaca solo first and find a good loop for her.

The main loop of the Jail Trail is tight and twisty singletrack but not too difficult at a slow pace. A beginner wouldn't find this too tough at all. Speed makes it tougher. There are a few tight turns and some short climbs that'll make you work but nothing a new rider couldn't learn from. :)
There's a reason the expert loop is named as such, just ride on past! (It is a lot of fun though)
If you can hit the Jail trail I recommend it highly.
