alright, stupid question.
I just got new carbon bars and stem, and now that I dont work at a bike shop and all of my connections that way have slipped through the cracks, i dont have a place i can really go to install my new bars, etc.
like i can do the install of the stem just fine, but its the grips i cant do. I need to get them off of my current bars and slip them onto my new ones.
i know you can use hairspray, but i hear that sucks, and I don't want to show up at one of the old shops i used to work at because 1 of them in 30 minutes from where i live, and the other is well... full of a bunch of elitists.
any suggestions as to how I can get my grips on and off without having to go to a shop to use their air compressor and not using hairspray, or am i out of luck? ;)

Cut your old grips off and throw them away. Buy some ODI lock ons and you will never have this issue again.

screwdriver and a waterbottle. Just be careful not to puncture the grip.
For a life long solution pick up a set of lock-jaws :D

Not sure who told you that hairspray sucks... It's been working great for me for the last decade. I'm finally on my second bottle. White Rain forever!

i've been usein hair spray and clear gloss paint to lock the grips back on, don't mix them!!! it doesn't work lol
take a small screwdriver and pry the grip up on the inner side of the bar. i always squirt some lube in ther and start twistin it around, comes off real slicklike. if your not guna save the grips, cut em off with a utility knife, it won't screw up your bars lol.
to put them back on, you gota move quick. spray some hairspray or pain or what have you in your grip and then on top of your bar. twist the grip onto the handlebar, doing this will spread the hairspray and allow for a full lock. you gota move fast, it takes me a couple trys normaly, specialy with smaller diamiter grips.
gl with your grips!

i dont want to pry my grips off with a screw driver of my carbon bars, to put them on new carbon bars you guys....
and no way for the lock jaws, i need my grips to match my pretty black and pink trek 6500 single speed. GOSH!
just kidding, thanks for the info.

ok then, if you don't wanna scratch in your bars, cut a lil peice of cloth and put it on the tip of the screwdriver, then it shouldn't dig down and scratch her up for ya. don't forget to use tape like i did lol

i am not a carbon fiber expert but i would say that using a screwdriver, knife or other "sharp" utensil will require a lot of care. no?
i have successfully used isopropyl alcohol and hairspray to get grips off in the past.
i second the ODI lock on suggestion, i have had mine for a couple seasons and they work great.

edit: nevermind what i said then. any neighbors have an air compressor? i do if you want to come use it ( in bloomington ).
Brianna-
To get your grips off, loosen your brake lever or shifter mount so that it slides easily on your bar. Use that to push your grip off the bar. Using it will apply even pressure around the entire grip. The grip will deform slightly and start to bulge away from the bar. Wiggle the whole works as you're sliding the lever/grip outward. Patience and determination is key.
May not always work, (about 90% of the time for me) but worth a shot.

very good tip troy, but i also took huge chunks of paint out of my bars doin that, not to godd for a carbon fiber bar.
i love my ODI LOCK ONS!!!
I would just make the trip to the shop. In my opinion, nothing beats how clean you can put grips on with an air compressor. Not only do they go on clean, you can use them the instant you put them on.
If not that, ulock your bike to a medium size tree, use a rope to tie a slip not around your grip, attach the other end of the rope to your ford pinto, allow 20 ft of slack in the rope, mash accelrator, brace yourself, cross fingers, hope you don't rip bars off frame
caution.... instructions in reverse do not work for installation

Put a smaller tip on it to get a nice could high pressure stream of air. Stick it underneith the grip on the inside of the bar, let er rip and pull off the grip.

Hah I gotta remember that one! Someday when I get around to building my redneck bicycle repair book I'll give you credit for it.

you WILL shoot the grip across the room.. that's half the fun.

Yeah Scott!!!
White Rain is who I used to work for.
Just so everyone knows, Government regulations have changed the formulations on pump hairsprays.
Anything you buy now will have a much higher water content and will not work for grip applications.
Old school (>2 years old) will work fine. I made sure to go through everything before they cleaned out the plant and took 3 cases of the old formulation of White Rain Extra Hold. If anyone needs some, let me know.

WD40 to get them off and on. Slide the red nozzle into the grip and give it a shot. twist the grip and pull it off. Let it stand a bit so the WD40 evaporates some. Slide onto new bars. They may be a bit slidy at first, but it tacks up nice and firm.

I bet this is kind of hard to explain when the date finds this under the sink.

Bah,
Not hard at all, it is upstairs in the bike parts storage room, along with all the seats, pedals, tubes, shifters, forks, wheels, cables, cleats, shoes, grips, chains, cassettes, etc that I have torn off of bikes over the years.

I hope they don't change Aqua Net spray. I wouldn't be able to shoot the Spud Gun. :etard:

Switch to air powered :) Get a tire valve, pump up to about 300 psi, have the air triggered by a sprinkler valve. Shoot spuds way farther I have found.

I also have an air powered gun, but I only run it at 100 psi (tested to 140). I'd have to build it out of steel if I were going to try 300 psi.
Fun stuff.
