View Full Version : My Tender Shin

About two weeks ago I had a small crash. Nothing major, just going too slow and not paying attention and I tumbled off the side of the trail. It didn't really hurt, except for that I came down on my shin right on top of my rear wheel and really raked it against my rear tire. It swelled up quite a bit (I should have taken a picture, sorry), but there appeared to be no serious damage so I biked home. It's been a little tender since then, but nothing major. Now, yesterday I was standing over my bike, taking a quick breather, and I nick my shin against the corner of my pedal and it felt like someone had just stabbed me. It swells up again within about 10 seconds. I was able to bike on it without pain, but once I got home and started walking on it I noticed that if I turned the bottom half of my leg inwards that it hurt quite a bit. Today that pain is gone and the area is just slightly swollen and warm.

So, what I guess I'm wondering is if this is something I should have someone take a look at, or is this normal for bruising and roughing up one's shin? Like I said, it hadn't hurt while walking, running or biking, and hadn't been an issue until I knocked it against my pedal.

Hmmm, I don't know I am pretty sure my shin feels like a wave from all the pedal impacts I've had, hahahahah. It'll go away in a couple weeks probably a contusion(sp?), just a super deep bruise maybe even down to the booooone. hahahaha, have fun with it! ice is a good thing!

As a firefighter and an EMT I would like to see you error on the cautious side and go and get it checked out. If it is something more that a deep bruise it's better to take care of it now. But that's just my opinion - it's your body and you know better than anyone how your shin is feeling.

Chances are, you have a bruised bone. I have done this many times and they hurt for a long time. No one can really give advice as to if you should see the doc. If you feel you should, go see one. I know I have a tendancy to not go to the doc when I should.....so I am not going to give advice on that....:)

Dude, your fine. If you see me out riding sometime, flag me down and I'll show you what my shins look like. It sounds pretty normal. If you ride enough, they get pretty beat up over the years.

If its causing you to not get on the bike for fear of whacking it again, then go get some 661 Veggie shin wraps. They are cheap and light and washable, just don't wear them with an all lycra get up please. If you are wearing lycra, you are already too much of a badass to need pads.

yea after making ground-beef out of my shins last summer they still kill if i bang them on anything now. try to protect them with whatever you can and give them time and they'll get better... sort of.

my shins are all scabs right now from my 1/4" studs, dam does it hurt. The pains short, it will last maybe 3 days and its gone, unless you smucked it to the bone then its guna be a couple weeks. Just gota keep ridein and once ur in the zone, you don't feel anything.

I'm not a doctor, but I played with one once in front of a TV :D and you need to get some leeches on that shin the next time it swells up. Just carry em around in your camelback and they'll be ready to go:banana:

Not to be an alarmist, but my wife had a similar injury on her bike. Went OTB and had a pedal smack her shin.

All seemed fine but then her shin swelled up and her ankle and foot went numb. It's called compartment syndrome and can be very dangerous in the most severe cases.

Thankfully, hers abated but it is worth seeing your doc if the pain and sensitivity does not subside soon.

I whacked my shin about 3/4 of the way through my last lap at Terrace Oaks yesterday, my Primo Tenderizers punched 2 clean holes in it, just mising the bone, and it killed for a little bit, but my years skateboarding and playing soccer finnally paid off, i got over it in about a minute, and when I got to the parking lot, i washed it off, and put some bandages on them, and now I have 2 circular skabs on my shin about an inch apart.

You all should get some clipless pedals.

Yeah, next one hander you do flick the hang loose sign. ;)

I wacked my shin this afternoon at the Elliot Park skatepark on a 26". 26ers are weird in skateparks. Next time I'll bring the 20". And the shin pads. :D

hey buck, get back to the skate park and we'll get in a no footer contest cuz mine look bigger lol!

I raped my shins pretty good today, use ice then heated the spot up then iced it agian. It worked pretty good, i don't have any swelling anymore.
