View Full Version : Hydration System Question

Ok, I have decided I need a larger hydration pack. So my question is which brand do I get?

I am looking for something that can hold gear, 1st Aid Equip, extra clothing, etc. Personally I think the CamelBak's are overpriced. Anyone have any experience with other brands? Anyone familiar with military style hydration packs?

Right now I have a small Camelbak and it can't hold all of my patroller gear, plus my diabetes crap. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

IMBA used to sell the Camelbak H.A.W.G. to patrollers for a pretty good price. Looks like they stopped doing it tho. Its a pretty good model for holding all that gear.

Check for a PM on getting a brand new one for about half price.

If you need even more space, a good way to go is getting a daypack with hydration compatibility. Then you just shove a resevoir in the pack.

Not really something you'd need but since the thread is similar I figured I'd share my new pack that I got for my birthday :D

It's the Lowepro DryZone Rover.

Holds all my camera gear in the bottom in a waterproof enclosure and has a hydration pack in the upper compartment. Saweeet!

I would Agree the H.A.W.G would be the best. 100 bucks isnt to crazy its a real nice pack. Search online I'm sure you can find it for less

tho REI has the pack and if your a member its $90.

I have the HAWG as well and have been using it since 2000 so it's six years old. The 100 bucks went a long ways I figure.

Dan and John.

NMBP's arrangement with Camelbak ran out and Camelbak is so overwhelmed with providing packs to the military that they chose to not renew it. We're looking at several other options, including the Salamon Raid 3 like Alden, Mike and I carry. Plus point: It now comes in red, like the new jerseys.

I don't know if we will have something online before the season ends, but we're trying.

Ride hydrated,

Not to sidetrack the thread, but it seems to be the thing to do lately.....

I heard somewhere that mosquitos are more attracted to red since it is the color of blood and therefore you should avoid wearing that color.

fact or fiction?

Fiction, Mosquitos are color blind and are attracted to carbon dioxide. Not smell, not color, not even any particular animal. They are attracted to what we exhale.

Hydration Pack Question - I know this will probably be all entirely user preference, but...

1. What size does everyone have?
2. What brand is it?
3. What kind of riding do you do? (mileage, trails)
4. Do you wish you had a bigger/smaller pack?

I'd hate to buy too small or too large. I am a newbie and can only do a few laps at Lebanon (okay 1 right now), but I know I will get better throughout the year. I also would like to use it hiking with my wife (easy day-hiking).

I would appreciate any help you can supply. Thanks.

I have a cheap "Outdoor" brand hydration pack that I got from Target 5 years ago for about $20 because at the time I couldn't afford a Camelback. Two years ago I replaced the bladder, hose & bite valve with the Camelback ($30, 70 oz.) bladder replacement set and now the setup works great. Camelbacks have a great bite valve that doesn't leak in my experience (xc offroad riding), which was the main drawback to my cheapo pack. That plus the wide bladder opening for cleaning. I was a little worried about compatibility but it dropped right in.

So that may be an option for someone on a budget -- buy a no-name pack and then replace the most important part - the bladder/hose/bite valve - with Camelback stuff and you have a poor man's Camelback.

I picked up a 50oz camel-bak from Penn for $30 today. Couldn't justify spending $40 more to get 20 more ounces. Thanks for your replies everyone!
