I slipped sideways off a log tonight and came down on the largest gear on my front crankset. The outer (largest) ring is bent up pretty bad. I was able to unbolt it and it slide right over the pedals, but I've been searching, and it looks like bike shops only carry the entire crankset. Anyone know where I can just get the outer ring for a Bontrager crankset?
Thanks,
Dave

you don't need a whole new ring. I did it alot with my xc racing bike. I always used a good chunk of 2x4 and a good ol rubber mallet to straighten it out. I'm a lil on the downside for $$ so thats y i do that, works good to.

I wore down the teeth on one of mine a few months ago. It was replaced with a new one (they are a standard size so most brands will work) that I ordered at a bike shop (Trek dealers should be able to get Bontranger if desired). Buy a bash guard while you are at it. Salsa makes a great sawblade looking one for going over logs.

a bashgaurd also depends on how much you use ur 3rd ring. I've been runnin dual bashes for a while and got alot more ground clearance. You can get em pretty cheep if you order online. The problem is finding the spacers to put on ur cranks. Frame clearence is also a big issue if your cranks are tucked in tight. If you do get a bash, make sure you get the right size! i think you can get bashes for you 3rd chain ring to... havn't found one yet but i've heard of em. Might wanna look those up.

Yeah, don't know what bike shop you ever frequent, as there isn't one remotely near Belle Plaine. But any bike shop should be able to get one in a couple of days (if they don't have one lying around). You could also order one online if that's how you roll. I'm guessing it's the 4-bolt kind so make sure you get one that fits.

I was actually in Belle Plaine this past weekend, so had I known I could have brought the big ring I have just sitting around. I took it off of my LX crankset when I singled my bike out, and it's been laying around since. Oh well.

Not every ring will work on your bike. You need to know how many bolts (4 or 5) and the bolt circle diameter. Most shops in the cities might have a few in stock or they can get it ordered in just a couple of days.

Thanks guys. I used my trusty BFH (big f-----g hammer) to straighten it out enough so I can now use the middle and small gear for now. I work close to Eriks and a Penn cycle. I will try to find a replacement there.

I have the same crankset on my Fuel 98, and the BFH seems to work great, I suggest using a rubber one though it's alot easier on the rings.

I've got some extra 42t, 4-bolt, 104bcd rings laying around - new and unused. I run 1x9 or 2x9 with and w/o bashers. If you want one I'll hook you up cheap.
