I'm looking for a lightweight chest protector. I ride cross country, so some might think this is overkill, but just last week I took a nasty spill and possibly cracked some ribs in the process. Would like something that I can wear under a jersey.

First off, make sure you get what you are looking for. These are designed for moto-x (and BMX). The lightweight (soft) ones will protect you from "roost" which obviously isn't a problem in XC mountain biking. The hard (plastic) ones will offer more protection in an impact, but are much more cumbersome.

Here's a bunch from Bob's Cycle Supply:

Thanks for the reply Kevin. Bob's looks to have a good selection at good prices.

What you said is very true. I want something lightweight, but I also want to be sure it will provide enough protection to actually help if I end up in the same situation that caused my current injury. I'll have to compromise somewhat I'm sure (most likely getting something a bit more heavy that provides decent protection in a fall).

Phil, I have a motocross one like the ones at Bob Cycle Supply. www.denniskirk.com (http://www.denniskirk.com) also has a big selection, I have a Thor brand hard plastic chest/shoulder protector that was about 70 bucks a few years ago. They are suprisingly light and really not that cumbersome. They do fit under jerseys, although I just wear them over a wicking t-shirt when its hot.

I had a dislocated shoulder and a broken collarbone in a 2 year span (both during bike polo) and I have since worn the Thor and no injuries. They would definitely help in a rib situation like yours.

for the guys and gals out there who crash...this place has a ton of stuff including women's specific gear, chest protectors, etc...that you can't walk in and get at a place like bob's. bob's can order it, but it takes a while.

This place has free 2-day shipping for orders over $100.

[if you ever see anyone wearing any sort of armor riding around here, it's probably me...it's all about preservation! i also hear from the boys that you are supposed to wear the armour over your jersey. i don't know. it's easier to wear it over. not as much chafing either.]
