View Full Version : Derailer went BOOM

So I don't know exactly why, but my derailer decided to explode today at the DIG event in Osceola. I didn't get a chance to look at it too close until I got to my car when I was leaving and took the derailer off the bike. I thought that I had just bent the piss out of the threaded portion that goes into the frame because it was all out of alignment, but I wasn't happy to see what had happened. The derailer hadn't bent and it had actually stripped all the threads in the frame. This wouldn't be a problem, but on the Bullit there isn't a derailer hanger and the derailer actually threads into the frame.....uhhh ohhhh.

So, does anybody know where I can get a new rear triangle real fast before the Redwing event next weekend? Or any ideas.....

Send it into Santa Cruz and for $150 they'll fix it. Won't be fast though.

Almost sounds as if your SOL. Give SC a call first thing Monday and see if they could help you out by sending a replacement rear triangle and you could send your in for repair in the mean time. With it being peak season sending anything back for repair turn around is going to take a while.

My brother did this to his old Heckler. We straightened the hanger with a biggest adjustable wrench we could lay our hands on and a little elbow grease.

Here's what we used to get the mech bolted back on:

Penn Cycle, and I'm sure most LBSs, offer helicoil derailleur hanger repair services:

In all, not a complicated solution, but a real bummer it ended your race. A lot cheaper than a new rear end too!

Sounds like that insert would work. Anybody around here have one in stock or laying around. Also, just to clarify, my derailer hanger isn't bent at all. I wish it would have... Instead of it bening the bolt that goes into the frame just bent off axis and stripped out the threads in the process.

Thor, QBP has both of these in stock so I can get them or any other shop close to you.

Glad to hear it wasn't bent...my misread. That is the one flaw of those bikes - a non-removable mech hanger. Otherwise, they're bomber.

Sounds like the helicoil will set you straight. Let us know how it goes.

Why do you advertise for an online shop in your signature? Do they sponsor you?

Yes, they do help me out, and Webcyclery (http://www.webcyclery.com/home.php) supports what we do. Anyone else that wants to carry Trials stuff in their shop, let me know. I'll gladly advertise for you. You find me another local shop that does, and I'll go there instead.

Does that answer your question?

I'd say just just toss a nut on it or helicoil it. I dont have much trust in helicoils but if it works as a temp fix run it. But definitly look into a solid fix. Or, find someone who can weld, fill in the hole, then drill and tap it.

Zero need to be jealous of children. I have my own.

Now go hop around on rocks like sand fleas.

Helicoils are usually stronger than normal threads. The rear der. hanger thread pitch is 10x1. You can go to a hardware store or auto parts store and purchase a kit to do it at home. The best fix for the der hanger is the kind that soupoboy recommended though. The der hanger isn't very thick so a helicoil would be more difficult to get just right.

Got the derailer fixed and then noticed that I had broke off/lost a fork axle clamp. It is in the process of overnight delivery from california as we speak.

Car, not yet. I need extra cash outside of my other thousand hobbies to afford that. But, I will do it someday soon. You going to any events this summer. If so, shoot me some info and I'll see if I can shift the money balance to do it.
