Yep... the course is going to be fast fast fast. We could actually use a nice soaking rain on about Wednesday or so, but I doubt that will happen. Watch out citizen racers... I've missed the past couple races, but I'll be out for blood... or at least to do better than Afton....

Gus,
I'm plannin' on coming down Friday evening to do some diggin' just for sh!ts and giggles...it'd be cool if I could have the weed whipper and chainsaw around to use...I'm guessing you'll probably be up there? If you could throw those in the truck that'd be awesome!
Thanks!

Do they still need volunteers?

Yes, I talked to Gus last night and volunteers are still needed for both days. Saturday, we need volunteers from 10-2 and Sunday I am not sure about the times, probably 8-3pm or so. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Is the xc course marked and is it ok to ride it saturday morning or during the downhill races?
Above, and can I still pre-register on-line? It won't let me.....

Not sure when they are marking the course. If you find me on Saturday(I'll be helping with the DH) I'd be happy to run the course with you.
Heath- I dont know when the cut off is for online registration. I would contact Gus about it. Maybe he'll let you in for the pre-registered price if online is closed already.

I'll ask Gus about the course marking issue tonight at the group ride.
I know that a portion of the new singletrack that will be in the race is also used in the DH, so at least that section (it's the new singletrack that leads down to the "5 way" intersection) will probably be closed by about 10:30 or so for the freaks.
The course is similar to last year I think, but with Stairway (and the singletrack that leads up to it) taken out, and the new singletrack (which is a mix of climbing and descending through some tightness) added. Citizen isn't going into the quarry, or doing the new singletrack I don't think.

What about the climb up from the driving range? Is that "IN" now?

Nope... at least not unless Gus changed things up.... only big climb will be out of the Quarry (My Ding-a-Ling). There is still quite a bit of climbing though. I think the thought was to keep people alive if it was 100 degrees and super humid. And it will be.

well if your bike is fixed by the 29th you can always do the reggae ride, it's an american tradition.
on other notes the race was a great time, even if there was a minor demo-derby at the start of the citizen race.

Thanks to all who came out and raced! Even though it was very sauna like, I think most everyone had a good time. As always, feedback from racers is definately taken seriously, so suggestions are more than welcome.
Another thanks to everyone who donated their time and sweat into making the event happen. Big props to Gus for all of the work he's put into the race.
Finally, thanks to the City of Red Wing for all of their accomodations. The trails and the race wouldn't be possible without their cooperation.

My only suggestion would have been to stagger the start. With that many starters (80+) for the Sport race it made for a pretty sketchy start heading into the singletrack.
Even having two waves would have been better than one, and it really is not all that much more work. I think that the biggest reason that it was a shocker was that we have had a staggered start in every other race this year, so it was unexpected to not have one yesterday.
Just my 2 cents.

Since this was my first race ever, I can't really provide a lot of perspective since I have nothing to compare it to, but I personally had a blast. I got caught behind (not involved in) the pile up in the citizen race right after the start, but since I wasn't worrying about placement or anything, it wasn't a big deal for me (everybody involved in that crash seemed to come out of it ok). I know that for the first mile or so I heard a lot of people complaining about the mass start, but again, since I have nothing to compare to, I don't know if that is the norm or not.
Thanks for putting on such a great race and for all the work you guys do on the trails over there!

honestly I rode the citizen race and watched the sport, while I am glad I wasn't a part of that cluster **** that was the sport race through centerfold it was somewhat amusing to watch, this course truly had some great locations to watch from.
I would encourage any and everyone to go to- http://www.red-wing.org/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_op=view_page&PAGE_id=11&MMN_position=11:5

Let me also say that I was VERY pleased with how the race was organized and conducted, despite any misgivings I had regarding the mass start. Congrats, Gus, on putting together and fun, safe, and exciting race! Thank you also to the many volunteers that helped ensure that everyone got water, food, and assistance when needed.

I would like to thank everyone for comming out to the race this year. Sorry about the start. Things got a little hectic with my volunteers so I had to scramble.
Also, thanks to all of my volunteers and sponsors. With out them it doesn't happen.

I know that people didn't like the mass starts... and at first I hated it too (as I wiped out to avoid totally mashing into someone after the log/skinny combo and then had to run up a couple of straight up hills)... but now thinking back... it certainly made it more interesting... I might actually like it. But I'm also undeniably a little not right in the head (32-15 on a 29er was a little stiff).
Oh... also... Gus... what was up with the article in the R-W Republican Eagle? Nice write-up and all... but... what was with the two dudes from Peace Coffee getting the big picture spread and all the locals getting shut out? ;) j/k Was just nice to get some pub, even if it's just in the local fishwrap factory. Oh... I think I spotted a typo too... I would say you meant about 200 hours, not 200 dollars has been put into the trail this year so far.

I rode the DH on Saturday and the Sport class on Sunday. What a freakin' blast! Way cool on the DH course, definitely some features in there that had some size I hadn't had a chance to ride anywhere else. Now I know my trusty C'Dale Lefty can hold up to a 6' drop to flat landing! Awesome course guys!
And for the XC Sport race on Sunday, it was great! Yeah, the mass start was different, but that's just what it was...different. I was surprised when they announced it, but just went with it, stomped around the pack to get a decent spot into the singletrack, and just kept a steady pace from there on in. The rain showers were a nice relief - thanks for that Gus Man! I think the amount of climbing per lap was just about right. My GPS said that 3 laps totalled 1735 feet of ascent. That's almost 600 feet per lap! It didn't seem like it was that much though. It must have been the excellent layout.:D That trail system has a lot to offer that other places don't...and it's barely 45 minutes from the cities.
Thanks again Gus Man! I can't wait to go back and hammer on the DH course some more...
