If anybody knows of someone willing/ qualified to weld on 7005 Al I could use a reference or two. The repair is needed on a weld seam on a seat tube mast, the hairline crack is about 2".

From what I do know, rods that can be used are 5356 (most common), 5183, or 5556. Additionally, I was informed no heat treating is required for 7005 metalurgy...

There has to be someone in the Metro that welds Al bicycle frames, isn't there???

Any info or references would be greatly appreciated...

Metals Joining Lab in Bloomington. The guy is a great welder, but he may throw a wrench at you if you look at him funny. I think he may have fixed one of Mike Carlson's frames.

HTS-2000 is a alum. repair product that is pretty cool. You might want to use the welder guy, but anybody that repairs frames sould know about this HTS-2000 stuff. I have welded 6000 series alum. for fun here at work, and the guys in the shop brag up the HTS-2000 stuff. Just do search to find it.

Thanks for the tech tip... The Ringer confirmed the repair success only to state the frame cracked in other locations... Once Al fatigues it's only a matter of time...

The Shop (Metals Joining Lab) is very flexible and willing to at least consider attempting the repair to extend the life of my battering ram... That's all you can really ask for when it comes to the fatigue of Al...

Thanks again...
