Is it possible? i have a Fuel 98.
I want it as a singlespeed since im hooked on SS's.
I have a Long Cage Sram 9.0 Derailleur will it work?
Would the chain fall off when the bike 3" travel compresses?
Yes.
1. Use the derailleur as a chain tensioner.
2. Determine what gear ratio you will run.
3. Shorten the chain as much as possible. If the chainstay length changes throughout the suspension travel, disconnect the shock and compress the suspension to the point at which the chainstay length is the greatest. Use this as a reference point when shortening the chain.
4. Enjoy.

I heard a road derailleur works great for this. It's a shorter cage and will run tighter, along with giving you more clearance.

I highly recommend a basic chain guide such as a Rohloff:

or running a basher with an nGear Jumpstop:

You might be able to go without one if you run a short cage and the largest front/rear combos you can (i.e. 42/2x) but losing the chain just once can have very painful consequences for a SSer.

Nick at nGear is great to work with. You send him an email with the size clamp you need and he sends you the part. Took me 3 days to get one. The best part is you put a check for $10 back in the envelop and send it to him. If you arent satisfied you just put the jumpstop back in the envelope. Quality product too. It is amazing the guy is able to trust people over the internet like this. I am very satisfied with mine and think the guy is great to work with.
