Here's the official (or as official as it will get) announcement....
What: Muddy River Downhill Race
When: July 15th, 2006
Where: Memorial Park, Red Wing, MN
Entry Fee: $10.00 (day of registration only)
The details:
In an effort to try and get some downhill racing tied to the MNSCS series, Gus is holding the first DH race in Red Wing on the newly constructed downhill course up on Memorial Bluff. Huge props to Buck, Thor, Pete, Dusty, Greg, Ryan, Porter and anyone else who helped with this trail. The trail wouldn't be there without your help.
We'll start to recon walk and stuff at 10:30 am. First runs will be around 11:30 or so I think. The entry fee will be 10 dollars at the door, with the top three places paying out.
There will be B-lines around everything that isn't rollable (still need a bit of work on one of the lines). I'll have rolled down everything with my rigid singlespeed before race weekend just as a last safety check (and I have no skillz). There are some definate chances to really fly, but also some more techy spots. A little something for everyone.
Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I probably won't be able to answer them, but I will forward them to Gus (gusman here, but his 'puter died).
Isaac
P.S. BIG Thanks to the City of Red Wing for allowing us to build this trail! They are a treat to work with.
Yo,
We need to finish the top section before the race. I've got some ideas...as done PK probably after our recent trip to Whistler. (jumps!!!!)

Sweet Buck... to be sure there is still quite a bit of work to finish everything up, but we should be able to get it to all come together by race time.
I can't build jumps like you guys, but if you let me know where and what (more specific than "jumps") I'll at a minimum clear the proposed area, and at a maximum try and build the stuff if you can't make it down (it's THREE WEEKS AWAY!! AGH!).

I'm out of town all weekend (family reunion "out west"), but I heard a rumor that Gus was going to be out working on trail stuff both days. If you ask nicely he could probably be tore away from his weed whip for a few hours.
I just roughed out a possible B-line for the second drop. I didn't have my bike, but I'll try and take it Thursday night to see what it's like. I also was working by myself and didn't have anyone to bounce ideas off of, so it might just suck.
I'll post up if Gus doesn't later this week what day/time someone from town will be up there.

Cody,
I'm no DH'er so I can't tell you if it's worth a 9 hour drive or not.
There are 5-6 fun jumps... at least as many berms... two big drops... some rollers... a littel drop into a little gully.... yes, there will be some pedaling but not too much I don't think. Again, I'm no downhill freak, so I'm not sure about that one.
18 hours is a long way to drive, Buck or Thor will have to speak for or against it. I'm hoping that we get enough people to turn out that more of the ski-ish type hills in the MNSCS will do something and we could get some sort of a downhill series going along with the XC stuff. There are enough races at ski hills that could have some sick courses... just need to get the ball rolling.
Thanks for even thinking of driving that far! I'd say hope to see you down for the race, but I have a wedding that I am ushering that day.

Isn't it great when your friends assume you'd be "honored" to usher at their wedding??? I love that! I've had the priveledge three times now...
Anyway, I was originally thinking it was only 3-4 hours from me to you, but I think you're more like five, so we'll tell the Black Hills boys to sit this one out. I'm thinking my crew will head up anyway. I'm not against pedaling, there's just a limit to how much is worth it! As long as there's more down than up, all's cool.
So...what kinds of big-scary do you boys have stashed off in the trees? I know you do. We ALL do, so spill it! I haven't scared myself in months. It's time.
YYOOOOO folks!!!!
Saturday!!! Red Wing, time to finish up the course and make sure it is solid for the race in two weeks!!!!!!! Just have to finish up the upper half...I've got a few ideas so does Thor, lets get this **** done so we have a pinner course top to bottoM!!!!!!

Hi Austin
As far as I know... it's one class. If there are like 75 people who show up, I'm not going to rule out that we could split it up then. But, with the short notice and everything, we're keeping it nice and simple this first year.
Thanks for the interest!

Should post up a link to the city peeps that allowed this to happen. After the race we can shoot 'em a thanks and let them know it wasn't a wasted effort?

At this point it is still one class. But if we get enough we will go to a biginner/citezen and a comp class.
Definately a big thanks to the city. this is way cool.

Yeah, not sure how we'll get there, yet. Prob figure it out on the way there. No hidden nuggets to get hurt on beside Interstates, maybe run the back roads...

Any idea how the race will be formatted yet? (i.e. Combined times for a couple of runs, Single fastest run of the day). It is good to see there is still some interest in downhill racing in the midwest. I'll try to make this one.
Thanks.

Gus/ Isaac, Are we going to have any medical support up on the bluff for the DH race? I can bring my patroller stuff (first aid and what not) but I am limited to what I have. Hopefully no one goes down too hard!

Ummmm... Gus needs to get a computer. I should just shut up and leave questions that he should take care of unanswered, but what fun would that be.
I would hope that Gus has something lined up, but in case if you can bring your stuff along Porter that would be awesome. I'm pretty bummed that I'm gonna miss what hopefully is a fun and challenging event for all the DHers. See you Sunday!
I will bring a large knife and a hot plate for amputations. I am sure we can find a stick in the woods for riders to bite on.
Seeya tomorrow... I'm off to work on the trail.

Can you give some brief details on the DH schedule and where the DH course is on the bluff. I wouldn't mind watching some of it before/after the X-country races.

Well, I can't seem to get any decent, basic info on this race, so I think we're going to pass on the 6 hour drive. Maybe after it gets established? Good luck all, hope it's fun

Like Troy said... XC is Sunday, DH is Saturday. The start of the DH run is towards the top of the doubletrack that the XC guys climb on the farthest east/southeast corner of the trail... (up from the "5 way" if you're hip to the Memorial trail slang). I'm assuming you won't be able to miss it if you're there tomorrow. Heck depending on how many people show up you could toss your hat in the ring for some of the "huge" prize money....

:D Hey, just wanted to say thanks to everyone that turned up at the DH today! Nice riding! Seems as though everyone had a good time and made some good contacts. Buck, thanks for brining out the Red Bull!!! and a special thanks to the two guys the came all the way from Chicago too(and to the riders that may have come from SD). You guys rock! Anyways....nice to meet all of you new people. If you have any input on the race and ideas for improvements, please let us know! Thanks again!
