So... I spotted this MOTHER STUNT a couple of years ago and have been too much of a sally... or too smart... to do it. There is a FRICKEN HUGE stair gap on the SE side of the St. Paul Science Museum. Probably around 25 stairs to clear the first set and the drop would be about 15 ft is my guess. All that and then you get to land on an equally large set of steps about 30 ft wide. INSANE!!! I found this little pic on the web that just doesn't do it justice.

Has anybody do it or heard of anybody doing it? If they have, ...sick... You should probably have your testicles dipped in gold and put on display in the museum.

Oh yeah, I've drooled over this one. My balls won't be dipped in gold anytime soon for attempting this one. Yes, I believe you can start the run-in from the street and pedel a good 100' before hitting the gap. This and the Robert Street bridge arch are two of St. Paul's gems for the professionals if they're ever in town. Neither should be attempted by us mortals.

McD out.

Hey now,

I was able to coast up the arch Thursday about 4 feet. No entry smoothing, rigid single, 38/17 gearing.

I know I would have no problem doing it with a slight entry ramp and 34/20 gearing on the single. I have been looking at that thing for 2 years. Hopefully this fall on a nice sunday morning with no wind I will be able to get Scott and Buck there with a couple of Video and Still cameras and get it on tape.

I wonder what the fine is going to be from the cops?

with an entry ramp (4 X8 sheet of plywood with a little bracing The entry will be the easy part, I am more worrided about crosswinds on top and the picking the wheel up for the exit.

From what I hear from some BMX buddies I have, somebody already did ride the bridge, and did it on a BMX bike. They said that he worked his you know what off getting up to the top, then shot like a rocket down. The best part is that they have a video of it somewhere. So the bridge is doable.

Sean, I love ya, but I'm gonna have to see your buddy's video before I believe it. Climbing that mother fcker seems almost impossible to me.

Lets get Charlie D on a Big Hit and let him loose!

Who are these people that we are spouting names off about.... Charlie D, Tyler K? They just too cool to ride with us mortals or what? I've never heard the name.

About the gap..... I think you could get enough speed by using the side walk and run-in, but I think the best bet would be to time the light on Kellog, bunny hop up the curb, pedal your gold balls off, then send it. Like Sean said, it's totally do-able, but not one of those every-day things. Put it this way, one of my biggest concerns isn't clearing the gap or landing, but trying to hold on when you get to the flat at the very bottom. You'll probably be diong about 25-30mph down the steps after you land and the tranny isn't a buttery smooth exit.

I da know, I kind of threw the idea out the door now. It's one of the stunts that you CAN'T mess up on or you are going to have some serious injuries..... still bad a$$ though.

Thor,

I'll let ya borrow my armor jacket. And I can be there shooting in both HD and SD....aaaand I'll throw in 2 cans...well make that 48 cans of red bull plus we can use my phone to call 911...does that help change your mind???

Hahahah

as for the bridge, I see it as do able, but if your worried about falling off of something 4' wide you probably shouldn't even try it.

Call 911 first and tell them someone fell at the bottom of the stairs and send the helo immediatly. Wait, 2-3 minutes, then send it. Timing should be pretty close for you landing the gap and helo landing on the road. Charlie D, I believe used to work at Eriks in Dinkytown, rode a Big Hit. What about Jed he'd probably be up for somthing like this if he was in the state.

No need for the Helicopter. United is a couple good throws of a bottle from the Science Musesum. Of course that's from the top of the steps...getting back up the bluff might be tough.

Ahh, that Charlie... Ya, Charlie isn't riding at all anymore. His only bike now is a track fixie. He has been lost to the dark side.

I think we should go get a beater and gohsty it off the top. If the bike can clear the gap without a rider, there's a chance it will do it without.

I've been wanting to just ride down those stairs for about 5 yrs. now...still haven't attempted it.

Yeah that fixie thing has to stop, nothing wrong with it but it just cant take the drops. Its funny I see him everyday but never get to ride with the guy :)

Charlie Dennis from Roseville already stomped it like 2 or 3 years ago. Unfortunately he doesn't have his BigHit anymore. I've seen some of the pics of that cat riding, he definately killed that gap. No launch ramp, no help, just did it.

I've heard of this bridge being done with a Freeride bike and can guess that it could be done by someone with enough nuts and not enough common sense. As for the gap, supposedly some guy out of Maplegrove gapped the first set of stairs but as for clearing the railing and being able to stop before you run into a metal gate I would doubt it but I'd buy the rounds that night unless you are eating through a straw. Post the video with some before and after pics, and bring a life jacket when you do the bridge.

I work a block away from the Science Museum, so I walked over and looked at this on my lunch hour. Considering the steel railings along the upper flight, on the landing, and on the lower flight. there is basically no room for error. The distance from the top of the upper flight to the lower flight is probably 100 feet. Any fool who jumped off the top steps and missed the lower set would be looking at a fall of 4 floors onto concrete.

First, I didn't mean to gap a billion feet and land all the way at the bottom. I meant the top set. See stick figure..... Still no stunt to be laughed at.

Second, Bob, where did you hear that Charlie Dennis did the gap? I am about 110% he didn't even try it. I used to ride a ton with Charlie and he never said anything about it.

I heard Charlie can triple backflips over picnic benches. Maybe that was just rumor though...

id consider it, ive certainly got the bike, the question is do i have the balls. ill go take a look at it. but i havent done much urban freeride recently, my bikes set up for dirt. looks dooable but ballsy like everyone said.

Even if you have the balls to do it, you won't afterwards. Leave it to the pros.

The guy that rode the arch on the bridge is Robbie Walsh. From what I hear, a couple years ago now, he was sponsored for snowboarding but ripped the freeriding in the spare time. I waiting to hear if he did the gap at the Science musuem, but from what I hear he landed it clean(making sure it is the same stair gap we are all talking about). This is all speculation and hear say, but I believe the words coming from this person telling me. Anybody ever hear of this guy before?

If we give Charlie a Demo 8 with DeeMax he'll do whatever we want him to. or so he says.........

Who is Charlie? And why does he need a demo 8 with Deemax wheels? Did he break his tricycle yesterday on a curb drop?

Yeah, I've ridden with robbie a couple times. He sold me my bike. That kid could tear it up. Again, just sends gaps with no hesitation. Last I heard he moved up north and was leading backpacking trips. But on a bike or snowboard, that dude was sick.

Who do you think taught me everything I know? If you had my helmet on and rec specs you could pull that gap off over the railing without using up any of those lives you have left.
Ore to shore in Marquette? Is that what you were talking about? If not let me know some more info and if it isn't on a race date, http://www.mnscs.com/html/eventschedule.asp

I'll be there. You can get a ride in the blue bomber pimped out with aerobed, TV and cooler. TV dinners not included.
