anyone have any input on the aforementioned formula? i have a used ust tire that's blown off the rim twice. stan's juice everywhere, very messy. i'm a little trepiditious about putting anything on that rim. your help is desperately needed. you're our only hope, obi-wan.

If your using UST rims, why not just use tubeless tires? After putting all the goo in there you get almost no weight benefit, only reason would be if you have a favorite tire thats not UST.

The problem is, the UST tire I have popped off the rim when inflated to max psi. It's a used tire and was mounted using a plastic lever before I knew that was a no - no. Now (after popping off a second time) the bead is f'd and the only option in the garage is a "normal" kevlar bead tire. Long story short, this is a bike I had just finished getting ride worthy, and I am planning to ride tomorrow at Buck Hill.

As long as it fits youll have no trouble at all, just make sure the bead is not kinked at all, and depending on rims you can run tubes too. UST tires also tend to have a "tighter" bead than normal ones, so if the tire goes on really loose it might take a few tries to get it to seat, id use a compressor to blast in the air. Also for UST, id suggest running +-40lbs (depending on your weight and riding style), running at the max should be fine, usually you can go at least 15+ over the limit its rated at safely. Just check the rim and tire max and never go over the rim max and youll be ok.

I'm using the Stans kit, and I love it. They recommend which "normal" tires are OK to use with their set up. I first rode the Hutchinson Bulldogs UST airlites, and now I'm riding IRC Mibro 2.25 normal tire. It is certainly makes for a fast wheel when you can loose 200-300 g per pair. You have to make sure your rim dosen't have a flat spot when running tubless as well. I'd part with the Hutchinson tires, if you need a new one.

That's a great point, I'll have to check my rim. It was out of round and I didn't notice a flat spot, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. How much for your Bulldogs?

Are you suggesting this just for this particular tire due to bead issues or for UST in general?
The theoretical beauty of UST is the abililty to run lower than tubed-tire PSI for enhanced performance and avoidance of snake-bites. The weight savings theory is essentially bunk.
I'm sure Erik's or Penn Cycle in the south metro will have a UST tire that will work for you.
Some tires have a good solid bead on them and some don't (including foldable types) Also depends upon the rim surface and lip.
If you keep blowing tires off the rim I'd start with a clean rim surface on the inside. Pay attention the the inner walls of the rim where the tire bead should seat any dirt or dammage here and it could be moot. Then check you tire for a decent bead on the edge and see if this is uniform all the way around the tire. If both are ok then this would be a step in the right direction for getting a "Normal" tire to fit a UST rim right. Also some tires fit looser that others you are after a tight seal.
I have had issues with "normal tires" and UST rims in the past as the sidewall is not as thick and can rip open leaving you back with the "Yes Tubes" option only for the ride out.
This is going to require some research on which combos work well and which are better suited for tubes. Stan's makes a decent product that if used correctly works very well, unfortunatly some decide to go to lightweight and complain (Search for conti supersonic tires and stans, this is a poor combo.)

That tire......too high blows off, too low might hit something and break the seal as well. That middle ground is the best spot if your having troubles.

The only reason for tubeless is to run lower psi. No tube, no pinch flats, lower psi, awesome cornering, better in the rough. I used to run about 35-40, now I'm at a comfortable 25-30. And its 200g lighter taboot.

yea - but what Doug was saying is that in this case, run higher psi since too high is blowing it off, lower psi could likely burp it.
Normally 25-30 would be a good range.
