View Full Version : rear shock recommendation

I need to replace the rear shock on my bike as it pretty toasted and the cost of repair is going to be quite high. I have seen lots of discussions on forks and other bike components, but not as much on the rear shock on this site.
bike setup: base 2003 specialized enduro
rider: ~180 lbs
ride style: have fun descending and climbing, some drops and jumps. I don't think that I have taken anything over 3 ft of air yet.
previous shock was a Fox Float R.
Any recommendations for a rear shock replacement?
Fox DHX. or get the Fox float R push'd!
Remember to check the eye to eye measurment so whatever you do get will fit!

For the unknowledgeable like me, what "push'd!"?

PUSH Industries specializes in aftermarket tuning of bike dampers - forks and rear shocks.
Check it: http://www.pushindustries.com/
Did that model Enduro has one of those proprietary Fox shocks that Specialized loves to use? If not, just go to MTBR and look for a shock in the classifieds. That's a popular bike so my guess is you should have some options once you nail down the eye-to-eye and stroke lengths.
Specialized bikes are pretty efficient pedalers. Unless you're really big or truly desiring of a "platform" style shock the Float R is a solid damper.
The Cane Creek Cloud 9 is a nice option too. If you send in your old damper you get $100 off a new shock. Good deal if yours is really spent.

I think the Enduro from that year came with the "Triad" shock. Push charges $95 for a complete rebuild of that model. That will most likely be cheaper than buying a new shock. ;)

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner. Call Darren at PUSH and see what his build schedule is like. It may be out there this time of year, but this is the most economic was to go and gets you a custom-tuned shock ta boot.

Thanks for the link to get a shock push'd. $150 for a rebuild/tune up is much better than price of a new shock. The build schedule was not bad as they expect I will have it back next weekend. I cannot wait to get the shock back and try it out.

Hey I see that Shourtt has a Enduro with a coil shock. How would that fair at pretty tame DH/FR? I'm looking for a new bike and a Enduro was one of the options (although rather expensive). Then when i start going bigger with it over the years, is it a bike to put a double crown on? Or would it mess with the geometry?
thanks

Call Speshy. My guess is that the HT on that bike will not withstand the shearing forces of a DC fork let alone a SC fork >5" travel. It will also trash the geo.
If you're gonna become a mutherhucker, I'd suggest finding a late model used steed on MTBR or elsewhere - Kona, Speshy Big Hit, etc.
Taking a XC/Trail bike and slapping a DH fork on it is a recipe for an ER visit. :hit:

I wouldnt consider a Enduro a XC bike, more of a hardcore all-mountain. Kyle Strait used one (and no not a Enduro SX) on this Red Bull sponsered FRing/Urban comp and he was using a SC and dropping off 10ft. walls with it. I was suprised that he was using that myself. I thought he would use a HT like every one else was (P.3 for example), but nooooo i guess he's too cool and used a full susp.
Also Ive been persuaded to get a Enduro from SLP Eriks from a anonymous salesperson (;)) that knows what type of riding i do. S/he said that a Enduro is one beast of a bike and would hold up through my abuse.
Im not going to huck it off of 20ft. walls or anything, maybe 8ft. at the max.
I dunno i'll still look into it and keep searching for a used/cheap new Bighit.

Kyle Strait also has the luxury of getting a new frame for every comp

Exactamundo!
I really don't care what you get, just don't waste your time thinking an Enduro is designed for "Freeride". I might take a few 10 footers, but it is certainly not designed with that in mind.
A used Big Hit or Bullit would be perfect for your intentions. Better to have a bike underemployed than overemployed. The latter puts you in the ER.
Eric Carter uses NOS Turner XCEs rebadged as Mongoose bikes for 4X. Per DT himself, they're good for one season at most and sometimes only for one day of heats.
