I just bought a Garmin Edge 305 trainer GPS unit and it's pretty cool. I was concerned about how well it would do in tree cover but so far it seems to be quite good.

Here is the map I did yesterday of a single lap that skips the XX and warm up loop.

(Compare it to the map that Ryan Anderson (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/) did who used a professional GPS unit.

I recorded my map with the "smart recording" option instead of recording datapoints every 1 second. If I had used the 1 second option I think it would have been an even better map. All in all though I'm pretty impressed with the unit.

I bought it for 285 + shipping off of ebay. The one I have has both cadence and a heartrate monitor which typically sells for around 399 retail.

It's a lot faster to get from point A to point B if you go in a straght line. Sheeeesh.....why put in all those extra miles weaving all over the place like that?

What was your distance for that lap?? I've not gotten a good read on that one due to overhead cover.

The training software I use lists this route at 4.65 miles.

Very cool. That's exactly what I don't like about garmin: it's maps!

Garmin actually bought motionbased.com awhile back after they figured out the software that came with the 201/301 was crap and everyone was using motionbased anyway. :)

You can get some cool maps like this one with google earth and motionbased with the 301/305.
