Wirth: Can we set up a Day of the week that we run Wirth the other way?

It would be fun to be able to run Wirth the other direction and make it a little more challenging...

Is this ever possible?

Say we run Wirth the opposite direction...on Wednesdays...?

What do people think?

I'd love to ride it the other way, but it would be hard to keep it safe.

It would only take one person that didn't know what was up.

On a side note...

A buddy of mine was riding one day and almost hit a guy riding the other way. The wrong way rider will remain nameless... but he was supposedly "counting how many people were on the trail".

yeah I've almost been hit by people going the other way too...

I think it would be pretty easy to put up a sign at the entrance on Wednesdays (or whatever day), with an arrow pointing the direction of the day...a BIG ORANGE arrow....

it would be lots of fun and more challenging for those of us who ride Wirth every day.

Couldn't have been a MORC trail volunteer? :crazy2:

I used to go backwards last year once in awhile to get a count. It was right after the official opening. It didn't take long to see Theo's popularity. I would always go slow and yield. I sometimes do it backwards if I find evidence of 'skidders', and try to educate them on proper trail etiquette. Caught three yesterday, as a matter of fact. They were cool and said that they understood my reasoning. One guy said he was coming to trail work.:)

I used to lead Topsy Turvy Teddy Tuesday, but it's a night ride, so there isn't much of a chance to hit anyone.

Matt Carples led me on a reversed lap on a Topsy Turvy Tuesday night ride last summer. It was actually really cool. It a whole new trail.

Why Shad is checking people's underwear is beyond me.

We have talked about doing this at Leb... our opinion ultimately was that any kind of regular "day" would confuse people too much. There are people that just don't get it the way it is. I don't think the mountain bike community as a whole is... umm... wise (?) enough to handle it.

I think it would have to be a special event that was flagged and had people at trail entrances letting everyone know things were backwards. A once a year type of thing, perhaps as a fundraiser or as part of another event. Even then there would be skidding because it would be a "new trail" and I think a lot of damage would be done.

At Lebanon we have decided not to do anything "official" in this regard... as fun as it might be.

If everyone were a MORC member and read the forums OR if all mountain bikers actually read and followed posted signs this type of thing would be easier to pull off.

Lastly, I think that if a specific direction has been set up and agreen upon by a land manager it should be cleared by them before anything were to happen. I have my doubts they would be open to that idea... but who knows. I don't know what kind of legal problems there would be if someone were to run into another person head on...

How about as part of the Mountain Bike Summit? Seems to me that there would be lots of regulars to help edumicate and to direct riders?!

That would be the kind of event one could pull something like this off and also incorportate good rider education (and MORC info) as well.
