Hakala!!! Afton Management (John) is working on getting the trail in shape, and there has been some voluteer effort to get the trail cleaned up. I'm sure there is still some raking and clean-up needed. If your interested in helping out let me know and I can give you more details, otherwise just show up at the hill and contact John (Afton Manager).

If the weather participates I'll be going out there next week to ride/ assess trail maintenance needs... Let me know if your interested in joining me for a ride/ trail assessment.

Rode Afton this am. I talked to John (mgr) a bit about what the new school wants, obstacles, DH, SL, FR ect. He claimed little by little, first a MORC resource would be nice. I explained my limited availability and that I like it just the way it is.

I know morc has meetings with Afton coming up, so post up your thoughts.

24 hour couse was perfect?
Afton Avalanche perfect?

Yo Heath-
Thanks for the update!!! Did you happen to check out DLA and how did it hold up to the winter?

Based on this weeks weather I wont be riding Afton... Next week if the weather participates...

Good to hear the trail sustained through the winter... Makes all the hard work worth it...

FYI... I'm fairly sure the log crossing over the water pipes wont be re-built this year. The bypass sets you up low for the quickcrete berm and slalom section... A little more climbing is always a nice painful option to the line...

Riding Afton tonight... Anyone got game for some riding and trail assessing I'll be on the bike by 1700 hours.

Magic- got your message, couldn't make it to BC... You moved some dirt with my rake I assume?

Heath- Thanks for keeping tabs on AA... Leadville training right?

First off... To all those that worked on Afton last year pat yourselves on the back... I was totally blown away how well the trails sustained over the winter and the ski season....

The trail we focused on maintaining was the 24 Hour course... That route is the most bang for your 8 bucks...

The trails are not marked as well as I'd like to see... I'll work with Afton on that... There are some head knockers that need to be cut back, I plan on doing that over the holiday weekend.

Get out and ride Afton it's prime and needs tread marks to keep the grass from overgrowing the trail...

Follow the 24... If you don't know the 24 ride with someone that does...

The trail (Specifically the 24 hour route) is in great shape!!!

Trail maintenance completed and headknockers removed on southern trails (Shady, Cliffs Edge, Southern Switchbacks, Bridge Loop exit)...

Trail work still needed- Bridge Loop entrance needs headknockers removed and grooming, buff up Valley View drop, groom DLA and mark for expert riding). 24 Signage plan proposal with AA Management, and last but not least it's time for some mowing...

el Magician--- I need my rake so I can move some dirt... Over?

I did a couple laps of the 24 hour route Saturday morning. The trail is was in excellent condition. I realy miss the log pile though. I also did a shorter lap just to hit the climbs, I took the "citizen" path at the par 3 green. Boy does it suck to have to be a citizen, that's rough. They should mark that "rolling beach" not "rolling meadow" :crazy2:
Thanks to those who worked on the trail last year, it's in much better condition then it's been in past springs.

Mowing is pretty much complete for now... Some of the tight sections need weeds whipped, but it's not bad...

Magic- If your going out to AA this week the entrance to the bridge loop is aweful loose, needs to be firmed up if we get some rain, maybe a bag or 2 of quickcrete if available... Also, remove headknockers/ widen the canopy a bit... Thanks!

Valley View singletrack drop needs to be shaped a bit with some small parallel roots removed to minimize skidding/ erosion.

Sunday we'll focus on shaping the slalom berm, we'll need someone on bike to help us mark it for flow... Nothing worse than anti-flow (having to brake when you shouldn't have too)...

Sunday work 9AM til Noon, eat, then ride.

Over?

To those that support trail work at Afton...

During my 5 laps yesterday I was able to make a full assessment of the trail status from the earlier races... All trails held up really well except the Valley View Singletrack drop... The Sport Class tore the snot out of the first drop over the roots then a sharp left... I figured that would happen since the section is high maintenance and it's been so dry. All other sections held up fine including the new stuff added last year...

So to those who work Afton (you know who you are...) Valley View is really the only weak spot... A couple of barrier rocks got torn out due to people cutting the trail, all that can be done until the soil is more pliable is rake and slight bench, no digging the soil is too dry...

Note to self- Next year make sure Valley View is kept out of the Sport race...

Real bummer about the guy that went down in the Sport race... My prayer is with you man... Brings reality to the situation...

The race course has been marked with red poles/ orange arrows. The route is almost identical to last years race. A couple of slight re-routes have been cut for erosion control and better flow (Thanks John!!!)...

The trails are in decent shape. Trail work will be occuring between now and the 25th. If interested in getting involved contact me at larry.sauber@fhr.com, or contact John Reents at Afton Alps...

Get out and ride Afton, just follow the orange arrows or the path of the most pain... 7+ miles/ lap and 1200' of vertical...
