Had a blast last night. The course was longer, took me 50min instead of 39min last year to do 2 laps.
LOTS of swag was raffled out after the race. Beverages, brats and other goodies for sale reasonable post too.
I beleive about 175 people showed up to ride Buck trail. $10 entry. Cool.

Cheers to that...if you like racing, heck if you like mountain biking and are within a half our drive from Buck swing by next week. You are missing out if you don't!
Great course last night, I liked the new sections. Thanks Penn and Buck Hill. :)

As a newbie to racing I was pleasantly surprised my first time out at Buckhill. Such a low key relaxed atmosphere. I was able to bring my kids and have a great time. My daughter and I raced in the beginner class and she was to my surprise able to finish our lap! Everyone was so encouraging to her! My younger kids also had a blast in the little kids race. The course was great too. Many thanks to Penn Cycle and Buckhill, we had a blast and will be back. Joe

First, thanks to everyone involved in making thursdays so fun. I'm aware this is the last year at Buck, but I'm wondering what Penn, or whoever really organizes this series is planning for the future? It's clear the demand for races like these are there, I don't think losing Buck will damage that. I'm curious what options are out there. Does anyone even think Afton is a viable weekly race venue?

TCAAP, the Twin Cities Arms & Ammunition Plant, (old New Brighton Arsenal) has terrain that would be good for races, and the facility is now open for organized events by organizations that meet the criteria. It may be a stretch to get a **series** of races there, but who knows.
I will provide the names & phone numbers of the principle contacts if anyone is seriously considering this venue.
This portion of TCAAP is a not part of the parcel currently "up for grabs" with various development or preservation proposals.

Does anyone know where I can find out if the race at Buck is going on tonight. It looks like it's going to rain out there at any minute (actually I don't have any windows near my desk, so it very well might be raining right now and I'd never know). Anyhow, I'm just wondering if it would be worth the drive down there only to find out it's been canceled.
Anyone know?

Not raining now in farmington and hold on a second........ I climed up onto my roof where I can see buck hill, and it isn't raining there either at the moment. :D Hope to see you out there Tex.

Had a blast racing tonight at Buck. Well run and a great first race event for me. Big thanks to Tom for race starting strategy, wish it would have worked for me. Good to meet ya BikerTex and every else out there tonight made it fun.
If the dude that was taking pictures on the big rock at buck tonight has a good one of me going up the trail I'd like to see it. I was the ONLY person at buck tonight wearing a MORC jersey and riding a white stallion.
Yeah, I had a blast last night too. I've never raced at Buck before, it's a pretty fun course. It's a bummer this is the last year for it.
JJ it was good meeting you too. I agree with ya, threading through the tight trees is a bit different than riding the tight ribbons of single track out in Fruita. But it's all good. Tom I thank you for the pre-race strategy too. Oh and thanks for the post race beer, however I think I should have drank some water afterwords too. I'm moving a little slow this morning. Heath, good job on kicking a$$ out there, not bad for an old man. Tell Duncan, he's a stud too. I think it's time for both of you guys to move up a category, then I'll only have to worry about racing your boy. :D

So what is the starting strategy? I was in the race also and people were bunched up for longer than normal, I think because there wasn't a long climb at the start to spread people out. I realized about a third of the way through the first lap that one guy (on a white Epic) was holding about 6 of us back. This is normal but by this time there was a large gap...
So what is the starting strategy?
No, there really was no strategy. It was just that Tom had raced the course before, and I hadn't, so he gave me a brief course description and what to expect.
The only real strategy he did give me was "ride the trail real fast and if something gets in your way - turn". Pretty much the same advice Booger gave John Cusack's character while they were sitting on top of the big mountain in the movie "Better off Dead". :D

Start strategy. Go like heck and be towards the front of the pack entering the singletrack. Yep, great idea except someone forgot to tell my legs and I entered the singletrack about 2nd or 3rd from last place and had to wait for traffic at the entrance. I had to laugh at myself at that point and just have a nice ride around buck twice. You meet a lot of nice people having fun doing a race.

I ride a couple of times a week around the metro and have never raced. Is there some info on how this is set up somewhere and is there maybe a beginner class. I play softball right near there and would like to race before the games. What time does the racing usually end. Thanks for any info.

That sounds about right for Buck Hill :). Sprint fast as you can so you don't get stuck behind the traffic jam entering the singletrack.
Beyond that, I've often found that you can suck on the downhills as long as you rock the uphills and you'll do well at Buck.
Man, I was sick this week but I might have forgotten about the Thursday night at the races anyway. Once I'm back from 'nam I'll have to hit up a few of these! :jumpy:

Go to www.buckhill.com for details on where. www.penncycle.com has info about the races themselves. But, it's easy enough to just remember every Thursday night with registration starting at 5:00 and ending at 6:15 and a race start at 6:30. If you start your race at 6:30:01 you're one second behind everyone else ;). Race usually done an hour or less before sunset.
There is a beginner class and yes, you should race in that class! :) Even if you've got lots of MTB experience but have never raced the beginner class is where you should start. Racing and just riding a trail are quite different experiences.

Squire, there is a great beginner class. Chris pretty much gave you all the links. It's a fairly low-key event, not a lot of attitude but a whole lot of fun. The course is challenging, but it won't kill ya. If you can ride Lebanon or Theo, you'll do fine at Buck. Hopefully we'll see you out there.
Oh, and they have $2.50 glasses of Summit beer too!

40 year old luck & my SS 32x18 was sweetness.
They all razzed me about moving up. I'd be lucky to finish middle of the pack there....that's how fast they are.....
Eric, up swill'n again? Is the ride off today? Call. I limited myself to 2 jack'n'cokes.
I'm gonna go ride road now, that's the story.

I think I'm still hung over from Friday morning. Yeah I got up at about 6:00 this morning, looked outside and it was still raining. No way I'm going to drive all the way down to Mount Kato to race in this, so I went back to bed.
Hope you had a fun ride.

They all razzed me
And will continue to do so until you move up. They are humorous about it, but sandbag too long and they will start getting surly on you. The "move up" cheer has been around WFBH longer than "burn him".
What's wrong with middle of the pack?? That is usual for me. I would be proud to be middle in the advanced though.
I can't race for a while, so I was out there hiking around the trail taking pics with my small camera. I had a lot of pics but I deleted most because they were blurry - maybe cause I can only use one arm right now. I will try to get out there some more and will post pics somewhere to share with you all. I talked to the guy taking pics with the good camera and he said he was just out taking pics for fun and wasn't going to do anything with them.
I can't wait to race buck again, the trail looked great. First time spectator - that was kinda cool to be in the quiet woods and all of a sudden here comes bikes, lots of bikes. But I would much rather be riding.
Jimmmaaay
i just threw the pics I had left on yahoo. These may be a little blurry, but not too bad. I am obviously not a pro camera guy. I'll try to get more thursday. check out what rich did to his knee before the race showing me a good jump he found - hehehe....

Great race. A little drizzle forced many to dnf & plenty of slick spots made for real rally!!! The after race party overshadows any timing issues. It's low key & fun. 122 racers... Good to see you out there Mara & others.
Jag, thanks for the picks, not bad for a one arm bandit. My arm hurts just thinking about it. Post up again if you have more from this week.
The timing folks afterward said they would fix, they didn't, I ended up ranked in Rec on paper. Who cares. I raced adv & perhaps due to rain faired very well. I'll stay for the weekly punishment will be good for me. Loved it.
Another thing, accourding to Rec results I ended up behind my buddy again. The first race of the year he dnf'ed, went through the finish & took honors in print as 1st place rec. Dang!! That's twice on paper he's beat me. I'm really gonna hear about it cause I gave him such a hard time about his 1st place May 4th. -AND- he even won the Ti Saddle raffle item last night!!!! ...it's all good. Good times folks.
D'oh! I'm bummed I had to miss it last night. My wife and I are alternating nights off, so this week I had Tuesday night and she had Thursday night. So I ended up going to Hopkins and doing an Opus Criterium on Tuesday night instead. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to getting back into the dirt next week.
Heath, I'm glad to hear you stepped up to the advanced group. Now you won't have to hear everyone chant "move up" when you win. Good luck.
Good racing again last evening...and for anyone looking to improve their MB skills these races are a good bet. If you missed it last night you missed a double bonus. The longest Buck Hill course and as mentioned before some rain to make the trail interesting.
Here are some from the last one. Deleted a lot of blurry ones again. Need more light or everyone needs to slow down. kidding of course.
Heath, good job in racing the next level. I hope i can race there sometime without holding up the after party. (And good wheelie at spring cup near the end of your race) We need more wheelie.

Would race if it is open durring the week

Buck is not open for general riding. Preriding is open before the thursday races. The courses are short so a pre-race lap usually takes less 20 minutes.
Are the races run rain or shine? It's looking like it might be a wet one tonight.

The trails at Buck are basically immune to rain, they drain very quickly. The races are seldom cancelled.

Since it is private and soon-to-be-condoed land, riding goes on in most conditions.
Last week, the trail was a greasy mudfest in the woods by the end of the second lap. It was my first time riding in mud and I can say with certainty, "I do not like riding in mud. At all.'
Here's to sunny skies tonight!

No doubt, there were a few loose spots that were really tough to climb. I saw one guy at the top of one of the hills standing on the side of the trail with his chain in his hands. That sux.

I made a little video of the rec race start last week 5-25-06 and put it on google. They started downhill then steep uphill right away. Its kind of cool to see the mass climbing the hill. If you are nervous about racing watch this video and notice the difference from the front to back of the pack. You can race any speed you are good with.

Hey, I have no car and I miss doing the thursday night races :( I live near Loring park, so if anyone heads past that area and wants to split gas money or something, please give me a holla...:)
that berm is near the end of the dirt parking lot just over the little dirt path hill. If you jump off it like the video shows watch for a loose gravel landing. not sure if buck hill sold the berm to the condos, so it may vanish. it seems like it is still on bucks property.

Nice sequence of 2 other riders and myself avoiding the crash. I am the one in the blue tank. This was the night I started in row 2 behind Paul and was 5th into the woods on my SS. Once realizing it was going to take a bit to recover I fizzled letting faster guys pass. mara certainly has some leg power. As I was removing her freewheel she used at tonights Buck Hill race, I had veins popping out of my forhead. Seriously, I had to sit on the wheel and use some sort of super strength to get that thing off. I actually heard the spokes make noise as I was breaking that thing loose! Give her credit, she can ride!
mara got 3rd tonight and a 3rd overall for the series. For someone who has never raced, that's impressive!

I definitely did not think that I would be saying this a few weeks ago, but I actually felt like I was "racing" out there last night...as opposed to "riding and watching others race". I REALLY liked the new traverse sections that were put in...they really fit my style and I enjoyed getting some good speed on those heading into the final downhill.
Now, if only they would firm up the bottom of that downhill so I could really bomb it and make that "horrible" uphill climb on that loose gravel a little easier! ;)

Anyone know what are the typical course lengths for the Buck Hill races?
Nickel

Is there a major difference between beginner's and recreational? It doesn't seem like very many people participate in the beginner's and I was just wondering if it is for people who have never ridden singletrack or just those who have never raced? Thanks
seejames
06-19-2006, 03:39 PM
Typical lap distance is about 3.5 miles or so. They have just done a major reconfiguration of the course, and I believe that it is pretty set for the rest of the year.
The major difference between the two classes are the number of laps that are done...and the competition. If you have done any racing of any type, and are in fairly good shape, I would recommend going recreational, there are some great girls in that group, otherwise race beginner one week to get the "feel" of the course and then move up to Rec.
Me and Rich have a lot of pics from last Thursdays race posted...

Yep, after the rec and adv kids race is at the bottom. It's a hoot.
Not sure of the oldest in the kids race? 8-9?
That sounds about right. Most were around 6 in the race I saw.
Heath, will you be there tonight?

Work is keeping me late, we have visitors in town.
This is 2 in a row I've missed, otherwise raced'em all.
Should be a beautiful & fun night tonight!! Enjoy!!

Reg. ends at 6:15, race starts at 6:30. Finish depends on how fast you are. :D

Is there a major difference between beginner's and recreational? It doesn't seem like very many people participate in the beginner's and I was just wondering if it is for people who have never ridden singletrack or just those who have never raced? Thanks
As stated the difference between beginner and recreational is just another lap. However if you are new I would be sure to show up early and get a lap in ahead of the race to familiarize yourself with the course. Everyone rides the same course and as an accomplished racer I have to say some sections are very difficult and intimidating and if you are quite a bit slower than the others you need to know that you will begin to get lapped near the end of your second lap in the Recreational Class by the top advanced riders and that may not be very fun. However if you come back regularly I'm sure you'll get better. I recommend doing the beginner the first week with a practice lap first.
Me and Rich started racing again last night so we are done taking pictures.
Yahoo photos changed my photos to their beta and you can download the full size picture now. And make comments, etc. Check it out....

Becky got a few shots of you guys last night. When she forwards them to me I will put them some place that you can enjoy them.
Apparently she was having some some "show-offs" trying to do wheelies for her...lol...great job getting back out there last night! It was great to have you out there!
I hope the pics turned out!
Rain, rain, rain!
Anyone else optimistic for non-dusty death trails? Ending the season on perfectly tacky trails -- it could happen. . . although slimy mud death trails would make it interesting, too

That would be stupendous and probably fun. Buck is great when tacky.

Might be the first time in weeks that I won't need to pick dirt out of my nose and eye sockets after the race.

Yeah...tacky, tacky, tacky....I want traction! Also, with a large group out there tomorrow, I want ANYTHING that will help keep that dust down to a minimum.
But then again, with how sandy the course is, we are going to need a good deal of rain to make ANY difference!

No coughing, sneezing, weezing, stomach cramps, dizzyness, blurryness, or any adverse side affects last night. No seriously, Buck was fab last night.
The recent rain held down dust. Humidity was nill. Competition was plentiful. The post party was fab too!

Got another pile of pics here for everyone to enjoy! You should be able to save the full size images now. I have printed out 20x30 posters from this camera, so feel free to take as many as you'd like and print them out! - Or just email them to impress your friends and family with your Ninja-like riding style!
I hope everyone else there had as much fun as I did. The free beer was a swell idea.:beer_yum: Thanks a bunch to all the Penn Cyle people who made this race series happen! That last race was a sweet way to end the Buck Hill season.

Hey,
Not that it matters now but there was a mistake for the series results for the rec mens. The 3rd and 4th place people were switched.
Does anyone know who to contact?
If not no worries

Looking at the July 20th one, I see I am in 12th place when I actually got a 4th. So I have no idea what is going on. Not like it's a big deal to me, but I do find it kind of strange.
