Here's my recommended compliment of tools and supplies for rides. Everything is contained in my CamelBak H.A.W.G.. Curious what everyone else recommends:

For Every Ride
* 1 spare tube
* Small air pump
* Mini tool kit (Park brand, I believe: extra chain links, chain tool, multitool)
* 15mm box-end wrench (some of my bikes have 15mm bolts instead of QR)
* Wallet, cell phone, keys

Rides longer than 2 hrs
* 1 more spare tube
* Duct tape
* Black electrical tape

Maah Daah Hey Supplies
This is what Shad, Andy and I took with us for our 3 day ride/camp trip covering 90 miles of singletrack.
* 2 spare tubes per rider
* 1 spare tire
* 7 spare spokes
* 1 set spare QR skewers (front and rear)
* Couldn't find but wanted 1 spare BoB trailer QR skewer
* Chain whip
* Casette removal tool
* B.F.W.
* Chain lube

That's why I like riding with you Chris, you carry everything and then I don't have to carry anything. Keeping that extra weight off, helps me to keep up with you ;)

Besides a tube, pump and mini-tool, A hand full of zip ties is a very handy thing to have on the trail. I have seen many friends get out of a bad situation with the help of a few zip ties.

Most extreme example: My advisor in college was on a solo ride in the mountains around Bozeman, way out in a remote location, with daylight running out when he snapped his chainstay in half. He was able to use a small crecent wrench and zip-ties, along with his socks to "brace" his chain-stay and ride out, rather than walking.

Never leave home without zip ties.

I also carry a very small (12" long) coil of steel wire, for more or less what the zip tires would do.

In addition to the zip ties, I take a couple cut outs from plastic coke bottles to use as a tire boot in case you hit a rock or blow out a sidewall bad. Works much better than a powerbar wrapper or a dollar bill.

Im with Sean on this one, some tire/rim combos suck ass to get off, and i carry em just in case i have to use them on mine or someone elses. You never know if your going to come across someone with a horrible tight tire bead.

Shad is next to me making the noises. Every now and then on hill climbs he makes noises like "Eeek ... creeeek ... eeeek .... creeek ..." I really gotta overhaul that bottom bracket.

It happened to me one night... and everyone (but Bob) sat around laughing at me struggling to change my dang tire. Even the little blue Park levers weren't much help, but without them I would have been walking back.

I ended up just cutting the tire off my rim the next day when I went to replace it...

Grab a Sun Rhyno Lite rim with just about any tire on it, especially a kevlar-bead, and get it on and off without levers. I'll even let you use soap and water if you really want to.

impossible.

I will never buy w/ pair of ryhno lites again after the current set dies. Worst non-UST rim ever for getting tires on and off. augh!

That was my my rim of choice for many years. That's when I discovered "Quick Sticks" instead of conventional levers. You only need one, you pry it under the bead of the tire and just rip it. I haven't seen one it won't remove.

AGREE..ryno lite....devil rims....harder than heck to get tires off.

Did i ever tell you about the time a lever flew out, hit me in the nose, bounced off, then hit the ceiling. No kidding, black and blue nose bone.

Saftey glasses, gloves and luck needed. I took the wheel to LBS to remove my studded tires this spring....I bent three levers trying to remove.

Word, I've had my share of "flying lever" incidents, and gone thru at least 3 individual blue park levers on those stupid things. The studs were the worst for me too, impossble to get on or off AND pointy...oh the pain....and bloody knuckles.

Changing a tube on one of those frickers mid-ride on a steamy july evening is real fun too. Skeeters just LOVE those rims, heck, they proally invented 'em.

not too sure that it's the rims. for whatever reason i roll a heavy-ass bike on xc trails - maybe cuz i'm cheap and don't want to drop the dinero on a new ride - and i have rhino lites on front and rear. now i used to have some DH tires on the front and rear but only on the rear now. my front is a maxxis bling bling which is kinda free ride but the rear is still a DH. long story short...i used to have a pain in the butt time trying to get the DH tires off but the free ride or XC tires seem to be WAY easier. i think that it's the sidewall and the thickness that creates the ease or lack thereof.... my 2 cents.

related funny story. riding wirth once, when you could actually ride down by the beach, my buddy brad and i hit the log down there. i hit it and my back tire slid. i broke my big chainring in half. brad tried using it as a throwing star and with his ninjaesque manner threw it at a tree. what he didn't know and i did was that the chainring shot straight up in the air, hit a tree branch, dropped right down and nailed him right on the top of the head. he was a good 10 -15 feet from the tree he was throwing it at. i watched this all happen in that slow motion action that happens when wierd stuff like this happens. i was just rolling after i knew he was allright of course.

peace

I do it all the time. I start by getting one tire lever under the bead and then pull the bead off the rim. Then insert a second lever next to that one and use it to then work it around the tire pulling the tire off. It can help from keeping the tire from popping back inside the rim.

I never go on ride without this. Even if I forget my bike... Always I bring my attitude. When I was about thirteen my friends said "Man, did you know you grit your teeth when you ride?..looks like you are a crazy man."

The next time I went riding I realized I do grit my teeth when I ride. I think it's just my way of letting the man know he doesn't own me and that I will rip his head off if I get the opportunity when no one is looking.
Probably true too. :eyeroll:

I used no tire levers. It was just as easy as putting it on my old rim. :)
