I've been told that we should park our cars in the parking lot by the lake (I can't remember the park name). I'm done doing that, until something changes. There's a lot of "trolling" going on there. It's kind of funny, you never see women "trolling". Does anyone know if we can park at the Par 3 or the main clubhouse without there being any issues?

Please don't park at the par 3. The MPRB doesn't want to irritate the golfing public. Eventually we will probably have more options. Ignore the jerks at the parking lot, and remember what a difference it made when we established ourselves at Wirth. Good activity tends to displace bad activity.

Interesting, last summer I one of MPLS's finest tell me that is the best palce to park.

As for the cops, they're not the ones making the rules. MOCA has been directed to tell riders to park at the beach house. WTF, it's a good warm up before you hit the trail anyway.

I always park at the beach lot. The more people around, the safer I feel about leaving my car unattended. Today there were families, bikers, walkers (with and without dogs), people fishing, and a couple of obvious cruisers - who were defintely in the minority. People. Theft deterrents.

As long as the boys aren't using the hood of my car, I don't mind 'em.

It's better than parking by a bunch of golfers. Yuck.

I seem to remember last year a discussion that said it was cool to park in the par three lot. I even remember a sign in the lot that said mtb parking and pointed to the right??? Did this change?

Yeah ... not to show a rift in memory among MOCA board members, but I do clearly remember the far East side of the Par3 lot being declaired OK for mountain bikers last year.

That said, I do believe bikers who drive to the trail are strongly encouraged to park at the Wirth Lake lot if at all possible.

Sounds like you're upset that you didn't get any bites :D. Just kidding. I agree with the other posts, the more positive stuff we get going on down there the more we'll push the bad elements out. Just like the weed whipers up in the fields. The more riders we get going through, those who are there for "alternate forms of recreation" will have to go somewhere else. Especially with more and more families riding around down there.

If it really bothers you look them in the eye, pull out your cell phone and tell them that you're going to call their wifes.

It used to be like that, yes. But, the people who run the Par 3 did change their minds mid-season last year and put up a quick sign pointing to the far east end of the lot saying "MTB Parking." I think they actually don't mind it so much because bikers do come into the little shop to buy sports drinks, candy bars and inner tubes.

Again, if at all possible please park at Wirth Lake. :)

The fastest I can go on my 32X16 is maybe 25mph if I'm really spinning it out. My car has a speedometer that goes up to 120mph, though. Therefore, it's obviously faster to drive to the trail than ride.

Get a speedometer for your bike that goes to 120 mph then it will be about equal.

Thanks for the clarification, Chris. Didn't know about the change. Still a good idea to park at the beach house though. Better yet, ride there. If you put a 106-10 on your ss you could be there even faster than in your car.

Well, I park there all the time when I'm patrolling. I have no idea how I would get to it if I needed it, but I have my large trauma kit, traction splint, Ambu bag, etc. (Stuff I can't fit in my football-sized first aid kit) in the van. I guess I just feel better knowing the gear is close-by, and I could send someone to get stuff if I really need it.

But...I also remember both the signs and somebody saying on the forum that it was okay to park there.

And why do they have tubes at a golf shop? Not complaining, just confused...

We've never been authorized to park at the par 3 for riding (only trail work). The paper sign at the par 3 was put up because they couldn't fully control the situation, and wanted the golfers to be able to get a rough idea of how many people were on the course by looking at the cars in the lot - so it said "golfers to the left, bikers to the right". It was far from official, it's something one of the par 3 workers put up after complaints from golfers. I am inquiring about a permanent sign, but I doubt it's going to fly, or we'll end up filling the lot.

We're still required to use the Beach lot. You could still be ticketed in the par 3 lot if you don't have a MOCA trail work sign on your dash.

As for the supplies, we've struck a deal for them to stock things we need (like tubes and patch kits) and to keep tools on site and available to bikers. QBP supplied the tools.

Hans, just make sure you check in with the worker at the Par 3 - I'll be talking to the manager this week and let him know that you need to park there.

So, moral of the story is still the same: park at the Wirth Lake lot if you have two thumbs and like brownies! :)

Thanks Shawn,

I have an NMBP sticker on the rear of the van and usually put one of our front plates in the windshield when I am patrolling. (Forgot to do it yesterday, but I did have a big yellow "Ironman Volunteer Parking" sign in the window. :) )

Thanks again.

Yeah, but at those speeds if I get into an accident I'm screwed. If I drive a large vehicle then if I do hit someone on a bike I can feel good knowing I'm going to "win."

There used to be a sign there that said the lot was for golf course patrons only. I don't know exactly when it was taken down but I know it was there. We used to only be able to park in the bigger lot where the chalet is before the wirth trail pilot project started. (north on wirth one block away from the par 3 lot immediately after walking bridge for golfers that goes over the parkway).
I don't ever remember being able to park at the par 3 lot and when we first started building the wirth trail we all had to print out sings and put them on our dashboards so we wouldn't get towed from the lot for parking there when we were not patrons of the par 3 golf course.
I think that should clear things up even more.

Yep, it's always been the policy. We don't want to overwhelm their parking lot, there are enough people who don't know any better parking there already.

If you're reading this, you now know.. besides, the ride between the entrance and the lot makes a nice cool down or warm up anyway - so just park in our lot at Wirth Beach.

Keep in mind, when the trail system is fully developed our lot will be at the center of the system - so all trails will have to begin and end there... dig? You want to park at the beach.;)

Just got back from my first ride at Teddy Wirth in 2 years....trail was great and lots of new paths I have yet to explore. Did two loops on the A&B and once I know them better will check the rest out.

Yes i did park at the beach...lots of guys 'trolling' around. Kind of funny, there was a police bike patrol officer (is that the correct name) on the beach. I rode up and chatted with him for a bit and then went back to load up the bike. As soon as he came around from behind the beach house, 5 or 6 cars started up and took off. We both laughed...

I don't have the MORC member under my name yet...but i assume it'll be there some day...

At least they are there and the 'cruisers' know they are going to show up occassionally. That's a big improvement from the past.

If you did the A & B loops, that is it for now. All the other trails aren't authorized. We are trying to get approval to rework the old rooty section, but something is slowing up the works, and the beach section isn't for our use at this point. Be happy with the reworked Wirth; more is in the works, hopefully.

The par 3 lot should be gated soon. If I remember correctly, they gate it over the winter.

The par 3 lot has never been official parking for the mountain bike trails. The official parking place is the Wirth Beach lot off of Glenwood. There is, not official yet, a bike path and singletrack that gets you from there to crossing HWY 55 and into the main entrance.

Our future plans will have singletrack that can take you all the way to the HWY 55 entrance. We are talking a few years, but the city does have plans in the works where we will probably get trails all the way from cedar to the current official trail system. Then you will have many more parking options and a lot more fun trail to ride! Yay!!

I've seen the Par 3 lot gated before after the GCs were closed but there was not enough snow to ski/shoe/tube on.

They don't gate the lot. They rent CC skis there in the winter and its a parking place for skiing, snowshoeing and the tubing run.

I've never seen the main lot closed so that is probably the better bet.

It will be open again. They are closing it to keep the golfers off the course.
Give it a week or so. They have to open it up again for the CC ski rentals they do in the same building. I would just park at the chalet lot now. I know that designated lot is at the wirth beach but they won't be using the big lot by the Chalet for anything else now that they are closing the golf course. In the summer though I would steer clear of that lot as well because there is just barley enough room in it for the golfers.
