I went to check out the trails over by Piedmont ski area OMG first time on the slick rock areas, a complete blast. (even though still too wet in low areas)The area had some sloppy parts which I basically waded through.
When I was leaving I ran into a older couple and they kind of gave me stink face and so I struck up a conversation to find out what their disgust was about. They live near Hartley and walk it daily and are very disappointed in bikers who have been going around wet spots and tearing up the woods (a 9 foot swath in some parts) and general tearing up the trails when it's wet, and they wondered why there wasn't signs up that tell bikers when it's OK to ride and that widening the trails is not good for some of those fragile areas the trail goes though.
I'm with 'em, and said that mountain bikers who enjoy and respect our sport wouldn't do this sort of thing to trails, we usually know better. I know it's been said before, but as a friendly stink face reminder from the public folks to watch for this kindda stuff. We'll need mountain bikers to be in a positive light with the public if we want more and better trails around.
Sorry, don't mean to rant on but I told the couple I'd say something and I wanted to stick to it, thanks
By the way who put in those bridges at Piedmont? They are great and sturdy, and are simple yet fit into the area well.

Isn't that how all trail work gets done around the state?

Making a trip to Duluth this weekend and was wondering what Hartley looks like. I'm just assuming it's a muddy mess but I thought I'd check.:)

Trails are closed. I would not ride on any trails up here for at least another month. Email Kurt for updates.

hartley and all the duluth dirt trails are closed. i peeked in hartley on sunday and the singletrack is still covered w/ ice/snow on the shady side.
and no bike tracks that i saw.
i'd like to give a big "thanks"to the bikers for staying out of hartley and off the trails at this time of year. i know it's tuff but it makes it better in the long run.

As the ambient temp is ideal for biking but the trails are not, the option is to ride the 7 Bridges Road. Well, it is not a dirt path, single track but the beats the boredom of trainer, or stationary bike. I saw two other responsible mtbrs staying away from muddy trail as I was climbing the route. Just a reminder mud does not do well with your bike drive train. Bad for the trails specially (we all know those).

I also saw a few MTB'ers busting through a red light on busy Woodland Ave today, almost causing a crash. I had no idea who they were.
Don't be like these guys.

i spoke w/ the staff at the hartley nature center this eve. the trails are still very muddy w/ standing water/puddles in spots.
the bad part is...under 6" of mudd, there's still frost.
please stay off until the trails are dry.

It seems that Duluth trails are still officially closed. I have been told that there are still large mudd parts at Hartley, tacky areas, some mentioned of bike tracks despite... When will the trails officially open? Can we ride and portage our bike at the muddy part(s)?

i was at parks and rec tonite for a mtg. there was a press release in the paper[??] that the trails are now open. i hven't been into hartley or anywhere yet so, if you ride the dirt, don't make the muddy spots bigger. if it's still soggy, stay off.
thx
