Since it looks like I'm the first one home from tonight's meeting (because everyone else is out taking the signs and fencing down)... I get to announce that the Theo Trails are open for the season!
Enjoy. And thanks for your patience.
The first trail work session will be wednesday the 19th at 5:00, meet at the par 3 golf course.

That's awesome news! How bad is the trail in terms of ruts and such? Any parts we should take it easy on?

Just ride it, it's a bit soft - so try to ride over any crusty edges left by inconsiderate riders that left ruts when it was still wet. This will help smooth them out, and hopefully keep them from catching any water before we get a chance to hit them with the tools.

I had the great pleasure of putting rubber to dirt at Theo with Shawn this afternoon to assess the conditions and it is in FINE shape in terms of rideability! The surface is damp, but firm. Grippy and fast to say the least.
There are a few rutted areas as Shawn mentioned. Get out and knock down the ridges of the ruts with your knobbies. And get out to trail building to fine tune it!
Theo is a great example of what sustainable trail building techniques mean to the vitality of the trail. Things are in great shape in spite of a few riders who ignored the 'closed' signs, tape and fences. Thanks to all who refrained from riding during the closed period.
All of those that worked so hard over the past several years to make this trail a reality and in such a fine manner deserve many thanks!

I just got off the phone with Wheels and, in an emergency decision, we're closing the trail again. One section is pretty soft.

The best trail in the Metro area is now open......:D Of course, you know I don't have a biased opinion.
Okay, the next few posts will be Leb lovers stating how much better that trail is.....:p

There's only one way to know for sure. I'm going to do an exhaustive study these next few decades by riding both Leb and Theo a LOT. I'll ride some other trails, too. After 50 or 60 years when I'm on my deathbed, I'll use my last breath to issue my final analysis as to which trail is, indeed, better.

Not a good debate.. both trails are good, as are all other MORC trails.

Not a good one, or a win-able one for that matter. They all have their quirks or traits that make them outstanding in their own way.
But's it's fun to fire up a little friendly banter. No harm intended. :)

How dare you lump Theo in with mediocre and therefore inferior trails like Lebanon.
How dare you, sir.

So much for John being the Great Unifier. It didn't hold up to Chris' "In-your-face" style.

Well, since you guys are all sitting at home or work posting on the forums, I'm going to go ride Theo now. I'll let you know how it is when I get back.

I wouldn't have been surprised. It would be just another example of the inferiority of dirt trails. This whole time everyone has been whining about Theo and Leb being closed, I've been tearing it up on the Greenway. No mud. No ruts. Just letting go of both brakes, tucking my ass behind the seat, and bombing that monster. That trail's been a great workout for my new fully Enduro, a plush ride that eats up everything and poops out bliss. Makes the stretch between Portland and Lyndale smoooooooove!
Now, go back to your pretty little dirt paths, children.

It's not a debate.....it's a joke. I hope no one takes debating trails seriously.
Anyway, Theo is open......and I can't wait to ride it. Hmmmmm....I have tomorrow off. Theo or Leb......Theo or Leb.....Theo or Leb......I will let you know tomorrow since I will probably not be able to do either because of the rain......:cryin:

Shut up Scott, the Greenway has been dumbed down so much that I find it more interesting the ride the path around my local park, it least it has turns. ;)

Trail was in nice condition this afternoon. No real problems area. A little slippery where it always is - 90d turns and off camber bits.
The trail was almost as tacky as Shad. Any tackier and it would be Velcro.
Glenwood connector is still covered with matted leaves.

I don't think I'm that fit, its just the first time out on dirt. Once I got going I couldn't stop. We should hook up for a ride soon.

I'm there with ya, Ty :). I got in a total of 5 laps yesterday. But, that was broken up by 3 laps over the noon hour and 2 in the afternoon. Over 40 miles of combined dirt and road riding for me yesterday. On the way home last night I totally ran out of gas on the greenway between Calhoun and Lake of the Isles, so I stopped into Brugers and bought two of those Hugh Jass chocolate chip cookies. Couldn't have made the last two miles of pavement home otherwise!

I just sneezed out a little chunk of Theo dirt. No wonder my nose was stuffy last night.
I did two laps yesterday after work, and it went something like this:
Trail: Hi Aaron. Remember me?
Me: Yeah, but I remember you being easier.
Trail: That's how it goes. Welcome to summer, slacker. By the way; here...
Me: What's this?
Trail: It's your ass.
Me: Oh... Thanks for handing it to me.
Trail: No problem. See ya tomorrow, fat boy.

I just got back from riding today and would say it was perfect conditions...no reason to wait any longer to get out there. New to the area from Colorado and thought it was cool that I could ride from downtown to Wirth using backroads and trail systems. Tomorrow I'm trying Battle Creek, but if anyone else rides from downtown let me know and we can head out to Wirth.

Welcome to Minnesota and the MORC site! This is a great place to start to find out about Minnesota riding. Minnesota is not Colorado, but we have some pretty nice singletrack. Feel free to join a group ride or ask any questions about the Minnesota scene!

Aaron's post was hilarious. I'm glad I wasn't reading that at work the first time or people would have been wondering if everything was okay I was laughing so loud.
So Theo grew some teeth over the winter, did he? Nice . . .

I took a lap around this afternoon. I ran into one guy going the wrong way, at least I think it was him and not me. I only rode it once before, so I'm not sure. I also lost the trail and ended up walking on some foot paths since I didn't see any tire tracks there.
Anyhow, it felt good to get grunting after all the spinning my 44/16 has done on the road lately.

Clockwise is the correct way and yes, it is a one-way trail.

I knew it was one way and was pretty sure I was going the right way. I started out going clockwise and don't think there was anything that threw me off.

I felt great out there tonight. After two laps I was about to head home. While I chatted with a guy at the trailhead (in the second section), this rider (who I've seen many times but don't know his name) with an IBEX frame flies by and yells "3rd lap" or something similar. I think he knew I just finished my second, so was this a taunt or challenge? Whatever it was, it worked. Did a third lap and it was great! My best lap of the night. Thanks man!

Sweet!
Glad everyone is digging the trails. The great condition of the trails is a testament to the advantages of sustainable trail design and construction.
Remember, it's only Mid-April - we've never been on the trails this early in the season before. Last year it was so wet we didn't open the trails until May - and even though I think we put a temporary close on them three times due to all the rain.
This year will be different as the trail is complete and packed in, so very little water will stand on the trails. Like last summer, we shouldn't be down for more than a day or two when it rains hard, even in May.
Thanks again to everyone for being patient, you don't even know yet what a difference a little restraint has done for the trails. We here at MOCA couldn't be happier, as we won't have to do much work at all this spring to get things sorted out. Just some de-berming and a few holes to fill. Our work load has been lightened, which means we get to ride instead of work.
Sustainable trails work, making them interesting and fun requires that you get out and help build reinforced features - like drops, jumps and armors.
Enjoy...

I hit up the trails lastnight, and was amazed at how good the conditions were. I didn't spot any big ruts or any major damage. I saw evidence of a few places where it looked like people were braking too hard and skidding a bit, but that was it.
Thank you, trail builders!
