Does such a beast exist? I am in the middle of fixing up two 21-speed road bikes that have 7-speed indexed Suntour derailleurs. The only replacement I can find is the cheapo sold by Nashbar, which is built for bikes without hangers.
So, for the time being, we are going to stay with the old Suntour stuff. I've seen several on eBay, but nothing new with long travel.

The derailer will follow the shifter mech, so I don't think it matters if you use a newer version/model.

I've used an 8-speed derailleur for a 6-speed freewheel on an old commuter. I'm sure you'll have an easier time finding something like that.

I was wondering if that would work...I figured it might... I just saw an 8/9 spd XT on sale, maybe I will pick that up. Thanks everyone!

I've got a couple of the XT 8 spd drails. Both in perfect condition, $15. Let me know if you're interested.

Ok, now I think I get it.
According to the Sheldon Brown page, a 126mm 7-speed Suntour has a 5.0 mm center-to-center spacing on the high gears, but 4.8 mm spacing on the low gears. However, according to his forum posts, you are better off switching to a Shimano 7-speed anyway. The modern design outweighs the .2mm spacing difference.
So, since I am stuck with spin-on 7-speed freewheel, the 5 mm spacing leaves the options of:
Shimano HG or IG 7-speed
SRAM freewheel (not cassette) 7-speed or 8-speed
Campy 8-speed
I assume that the cable pull per shifter click is not standard, so I'll have to change shifter brands if I change derailleurs. I think it's going to take a bit of looking around to find this stuff.
There is always the option of going back to friction shifting, but I'm not gonna do that.

I'll look, but I think I have an old GripShift rear shifter in the heap. I KNOW I have an old XT rear. Let me look later and I'll let you know.

Works for me, then I don't have to order something. Thanks!

The 8 speed XT rear has been installed and working great on my 7 speed cassette. Thanks again Tyson!
