I was not sure if I should post this in Gear or here... I chose here.

I wanted to mention a new fit service we have been offering at Erik's for the past year. We now offer a custom fitting service by Chris Balser. Chris is a fit expert and has even trained with Dr. Andy Pruit. Dr. Pruit is the Director of the Bolder Institute for Athletic Medicine and was the chief medical officer for USA Cycling.
Anyway....... Bike fit isn't nearly as focused for mountain bikers as it is for roadies but Chris does offer one service NO rider should pass up. Pedal/cleat alignment. Chris uses both a Computrainer with Spin Scan as well as a laser to properly align your pedal stroke on both your right and left leg. What this will do for you is two fold.

1. Your pedaling WILL be more efficient. You will pedal more smoothly and faster with the same level of effort.
2. If you experience any knee discomfort of have other issues Chris may be able to eliminate these.

I did a pedal fit with Chris two weeks ago. I have been riding my rollers 5 nights a week all winter. After a session with Chris my pedal RPM's when up 10-12, in the same gear, while retaining a heart rate of about 130. Considering I was riding in the mid 80's for RPM and went up to the mid 90's I was VERY impressed.
If you are interested you can e-mail Chris at truefit@eriksbikeshop.com

Best,
Dave O

So that's what CB is doing in that new Pain Cave built at Erik's SLP? I thought he was flogging misfit riders into shape.

Well there's a little bit of that too, but it will cost ya extra.

A stand alone pedal fitting runs $80
A full fitting runs $150

Chris adjusted the angles that may feet sit in my shoes on both legs. What this does it correct the vertical motion of the pedal stroke. He also had me buy a set of insoles that do three things.
1. Give proper arch support for better stability.
2. Have a small bump called that can help to keep the foot from going numb if you have issues.
3. Come with a variety of valgus and varus wedges to adjust the angle of your foot.
The insoles run $44.99

Thanks

Dave O,
I have 2 bikes that I ride a lot: my XC mtn bike and my CX commuter. I use Time pedals on the XC and Shimano Mtn pedals on the CX. Suppose I purchased the $80 cleat fitting for the XC bike. Would I be able to use that info to also dial in the CX? Or would the fitting cleat fitting on the XC be completely different and not transferable to the CX?
Thanks-

My physical therapist had recommended that I get insoles with more arch support so, I looked around for insoles designed for bike shoes last year but didn't find anything. What soles are these?

They are made by Specialized and come in 3 different models for your particular arch. There's a thermal foot pad you stand on to determine what model you need.

Yes. If you have one pair of shoes setup it can be replicated in the other pair.
Sorry. The MORC discount does not apply.
