View Full Version : Wrenching section of the forums?

While there's good information on mountain bike maintenance scattered around these forums, what about starting up a section specifically for that topic? You could have a couple "pinned" topics full of links to good sites or pages for specific repairs or even PDF files of suspension fork manuals and the like.

In addition to that anyone can post questions about problems they're having working on their bike and get advice on stuff. Also, anybody with tidbits of wrenching advice they just feel like sharing can just start a thread on that, too. It'd be sort of like the "Riding Tips" section but mechanics-oriented instead of riding skills.

Whatcha guys think?

As a noob, I think that would be a great idea!

Sounds like a good way to organize useful information.

Great idea, remember to include this in the pinned part. Lots of good info:

Great idea. I'd like to learn more about maintenance so it gets done more often. It's almost as much fun to work on bikes as it is to ride them. I have a few projects that need done. Now, about finding tools, which I'll only use a few times, without laying out cash...

That is a good idea. I have some "tips" on how to DIY stuff without the correct tools.

Of course, it'll have to be approved by the legal department so as to have all of the appropriate disclaimers and such.

No problem on the link. As for tools you can rent shop time in MPLS and STP.

Linky:
MPLS http://home.mn.rr.com/collectivecycle/
STP http://www.bikeped.org/

or just ask around on here, someone might let you borrow their tools/shop for beer. :)

I know there used to be "coaching" done by members/etc(Doug, Pete from Penn). I can operate the pump and quick releases without a manual, everything else I hit the Park Tool site or bring it to Hollywood. :)

Woo! Glad to see there's so much support for the idea.

John L? You listening? :)

In addition to regular repair and maintenance stuff people could share their wisdom on things like emergency trail repairs for when you just need to ride that extra couple of miles back to the car. Things like using duct tape on the inside of a tire to fix a rupture and wrapping a broken spoke around the one next to it and re-tightening the spokes to keep the wheel straight enough.

I think that having a section of the forums like that would be a good idea. I do all of my own wrenching and have a fair amount of experience and would love to share what I can with others who actually care (most people I know could care less that I know a really quick easy way to tune a rear der.) It would also be cool to have others that know more than I do help me out and share their knowledge.

Like stuffing your tire full of grass because you forgot to bing a pump, a patch kit, or a tube.</wisdom>

Can you McGuyver some cassettes from one wheel to another using only a rubberband, Bazooka gum, plastic spork and a rolled up Newsweek? That's my next challenge. I got the disc wheels  to go with your Hayes.

I too, have made many contraptions to get the job done. I used to (when I was even MORE broke than I am now) refuse to buy a $25 tool that I'd use for one small task....like a chain whip. I finally bit the bullet and bought one. A sub-forum just about wrenching on bikes would be great.

This is a horrible idea. I quite enjoy feeling superior to those inept fools riding about the woods with drivetrains gnashing, brakes squeeling and dampers bouncing (or not) unnecessarily so.

I aims to mislead. Moderator - set up the Forum.

You know you have a tool buying program when you purchase a Park KS-1.

Then again I used to just make my own chainwhips out of a block of wood and a chain. See now that would be a good addition to a wrenching forum.

Another thought would be to have a sticky at the top of a new forum and anytime someone made a good post or how to a moderator could add that post to that thread?

I always thought that wouldn't be a bad idea in the riding tips forum for a lot of the articles that Shad wrote. That could actually almost be a whole new section of the site. Make the website an even more useful tool for people who don't know how to search the forums but might be able to navigate the website itself.

Many of the same herculean MacGuyver-esque feats. It goes like this, you drink beer, I say "Hey Tom, watch this!" and if you don't say "ooh" then you drink another beer. And repeat until I am demonstrating wicked feats of strength and intelligence. It is a fun game. :D

And, I couldn't resist mentioning beer, what else goes so well with wrenching?

It won't even take beer for me to go "ooh". I'm like a monkey with a shiny object.

Really good music is needed to round out the beer+wrenching=perfect night equation. You CAN'T wrench or beer (yes it's a verb) in silence.

Oh yeah, I've always got a bunch of Air Supply or Michael Bolton at the ready on the ipod for wrenching sessions. :D

Okay, I will look into adding a section.

Right now I'm just doing PT on Mon and Fri nights. Jay's is Belgium this week:etard: so I've been there a couple more times to crank out repairs. I'll be there 3-7 tonight.
