I recently picked up a new bike to use a commuter to and from work this summer. Only living 10 miles from work I feel ashamed to drive when the weather is so nice out.

Last summer I did a little commuting on a singlespeed mountain bike that I had built up for the purpose but I just never enjoyed riding it all that much.

So I have acquired a classic Reynolds 853 steel tubed Motobecane Le Champion. I'm not expert when it comes to road bikes so I'm not sure what year it is but something in the 70's I would assume.

Features a full campy groupo minus the wheels which someone replaced at some point with some generic specialized stuff.

Looking forward to breaking it down, putting some new rubber on it, new bar tape, brake hoods, cables, etc. and getting it ready for maybe a maiden ride this week if the weather holds.

Well my commuter and I survived our first ride in to work of the year. Definately gonna be a pain in the butt to get back up to speed as I felt pretty sluggish but overall it was a nice stroll through the back streets.

It was a sluggy morning, especially if you had to bike south. That wind was killer for this early in the season.

Any frame experts out there?

I'm pretty sure 853 steel was not used until at least the 80s and I thought not widely used unitl the 90's?

motobecanes from the 70's used 531 reynolds steel.

You are both correct. Brain fart.
