The MNSCS discussion page has asked the question, "what type of awards should we have this year"?
http://www.mnscs.com/messageboard/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=252
please offer up suggestions, they need help!
An added a suggestion, we need to find a talented MC for the MNSCS events. Lots of people here on the MORC forum have talented voices and would love the attentive audience at the races.... any suggestions?
should someone start a poll?:p

Not that I'd ever have to worry about recieving anything, so take that for what it's worth, but I would say that each race should have their own. Red Wing's race could either have Rock and Roll themed awards or Red Wing potteryesque ones for example. Having something unique to each race might make them a bit more "special". Just my .00002 cents.

Yes, $$$ cost depends. The MNSCS Series is pretty big, and require a lot of awards. But I could work something out. If things go through, a portion would also go towards MORC.
The awards above were for a race in CO. I did six, and charged $250, but wrote off the rest of the cost as 'word of mouth' advertising and it has paid off.
There was a thread about this subject a while back, too.
Feel free to PM me.

If you want the best MC for a race, my vote is for the VOICE of Buckhill, Tim from Penn Cycle....

I like useful awards, if we're talking for each individual race. I have an attic full of neat trophies/medals. I use my pint glasses everyday. I don't need any more dust collectors.
Take this into consideration as well... a lot of the same people get them at every race. Who wants eight of the same thing?

Agreed. I have a box full of cheapo trophies and stupid medals. No use.
Pint glasses are cool, but I also have a large box of all my broken pint glasses. Glass breaks :cryin: and then the cool pint glass 'award' is gone.
I can make useful things, too!
Clocks? Wine Racks? Tables? ANYTHING!

Forget all of this and just hand out MONEY! That will draw larger groups of racers and who can't use more money.

At the Iron Range Off-Road Triathlon (Xterra series race) last year, we handed out Park Tool Multi-Tools with the race name printed on them. Not that expensive and very well received.

Yes I know that fact. Bring the money down to all levels. Nobody needs more crap to hang in the garage or stuff into a box.
While never being involved in putting on a race, let alone a series, it is my understanding that these events do not have a lot of funding. Preparing the course, getting food, porta potties, registration materials, emergency personnel, ( yay Bike Patrol ) insurance, etc. are all really expensive. Buying series awards in bulk is a lot less costly than trying to give cash payouts in an amount anyone would care about. Just my stingy accountant opinion.

in the expert class, the entry fee monies are used for a payback. as mara sez, if you gave money to all classes, there'd be nuttin to pay the bills. the series supplies the awards and the fee charged to the individual races pays for the series expenses. did you know all that??

ps. congrats mara

Yes I do know all of this. If this state wants to get serious about racing, then it needs to step it up. People are tired of paying entry fees that are 30.00 dollars or more and get nothing in return. I've raced in this state for over 20 years and it's only went downhill and fast. So many reason's for why this has happened.
The question was asked and I answered it.
Clearly money is the underlying issue in having awards. If there is money I think tangible goods are most appreciated along with a small award. As an aging competitor when I look back on my dust collectors I enjoy the sentimental value. If it is unique so much the better, like the leather fob on a leather strap from Lutsen years ago or the wood disc from a branch from Maplelag. Simple, inexpensive and unique to the event.
In the end all of this relies on the organizers to strategize and find a way to get sponsorship/funding. Having some decent awards and stuff for participants can be a real plus and make a fun event outstanding and make you want to come back next year. I believe that most participants are willing to help in some way. If organizers need help finding sponsors or want to get some donations for an overall approach to this issue, I bet many would help out.

I've got my award made by Beau proudly displayed on my Mantle at home. I still got a 40 dollar gift certificate to use as well.
off topic: Hey Beau any interest in maybe making a piece that could be displayed on our guestbook table for my wedding?
One of the themes for our wedding is a bicycle built for two. I was thinking some kinda of tandem bicycle with chainrings that could hold pictures or something?
