View Full Version : Chilly Chili RESULTS: RACE 2

Well. I have to admit. Minnesota Cyclists are a tenacious group. Given the race conditions at this year's Chilly Chili Ice Race #2, I have to give these people some serious credit. With standing water and slush covering the course, a bit of rain and finally a bit of snow, we still had nearly 50 riders show up.

The course was much shorter than last week given that we had no snow to help us direct the route and the snow covered trails became soft and muddy, thus we had to resort to a shorter, nearly all ice criterium. The result? A mess of B racers lapping the hell out of each other and a soaking wet mess. Fun!!!

The A race started with 11 riders and finished with only 6 as most of the riders bowed out with flat tires. Not sure the reason for this as I didn't see a single flat tire in the 35 person B race. Nonetheless it was bound to be a battle for the top spot overall Ice Criterium Championship and with points on the line for the top 10 finishers. It was wise to jump back in to the race if you could get your flats fixed. That is exactly what top rider Tim "Chuck" Norrie did after flatting a few laps into the race. Tim managed a quick bike change, jumped in at the end of his lap and continued to battle on chasing down race leader, Peter Maxwell who was getting hammered on by Josh Schwantes. However, it was Josh's turn to flat and run looking for a spare wheel. Knowing that he was in the running for the overall points and the field was diminishing by almost a rider per lap, Josh found another bike, jumped back in the race a lap down but finished the A race gathering an important 7 points. As for Tim, his bike change was fast enough and his legs were strong enough to allow him to catch the flying Peter Maxwell for a convincing win. Add todays 15 points to last weeks 15 and Tim turned in a perfect undefeated Ice Criterium Championship.

But what about Hollywood? Well, this was his course but a flat and a little pukin' found him sitting pantsless in his truck early on. Still the 3 time defending Ice Criterium Champion felt the thrill of victory watching his teammate keep the trophy in the Hollywood Cycles house.

In the womens' race, Maria Stewert found victory today after going swimming at least once during the race. The Velo Bella was free to run away with this one as her new Belgian teammate Lieselot Decroix was not in attendance. Unfortunately I do not have any more results for the womens' race as the riders were all over the course making officiating tough.

Well, enough of that. I just want to thank everyone for making this race such a blast for us organizers and we will be sure to be back next year with more creative courses and even more prizes!

Ha! I got the coveted last place two weeks in a row. . . Don't hate me for my bike skills. I know you're jealous :p

I am the mysterious rider 245. For the record, I finished right behind Ted Weigandt and Heath Weisbrod was a rider or two or three behind us. I am not sure on any of the other riders. I know it was a challenge to keep riders straight in the B race, although I really liked the "short track" effect. Pretty cool.

Thanks again for a great race!

Are you trying to tell me I got 8th? If Maria was able to get in her last lap that she thought she did....I would be 9th because she passed me right before the finish. But appearantly she got lapped by the leader just before she crossed the start finish, and wasn't told, and her last lap didn't count.....which explains why she is 1 place behind me. Rules are rules......but if she didn't get lapped by the leader, she would have beat me.

Just one thing. Last week we were supposed to put our numbers on the left side....so this week I did the same. But, when I was watching that video, someone was standing on the racers right sides calling out numbers. Just wondering if there was some confusion on where to put our numbers. I still think the handlebars are the best spot. That way you can see the numbers as the riders come toword the start/finish. Anyway.....fun race and I don't care what place I got.

Yes and I don't care what place you got either!:D

Really, I am contributing information that I know in hopes of adding my name to the list and moving it from Mara's self-proclaimed finishing position.

The 'B' race results are a bit off. There was definitely some confusion with lapped riders on the last few laps. No complaints though. I did see some pics taken by a friend of the last turn on the last lap. It shows the dude with the white beard (Matt Moore?), followed by a guy in a red jacket (Eric?), and then me (on a cyclocross bike wearing orange jersey), and then guy in purple jacket (Heath). I had to duel with Heath in a sprint, but I think I got him. I know there was at least another guy in a beigish/greyish jacket that I passed on the last couple laps too. Sorry Shad, I think that bumps you down some more.

It doesn't really matter. Great job putting on this fun event!

As well you should, darn it. I worked really hard for that place and I will fight you for it. ;)

I don't think any of the names after the numbered finishes were listed in any particular order. I know you lapped me at least once, if not twice, and were quite pleasant while doing so.

Cool! Another piece to the puzzle. Not sure who was in the red jacket. The tall dude with the white beard is Matt Moore. I was in black with a grey helmet on a black Fisher Rig. In the sprint, Heath said you had him by a few inches! Get those pics on here!

What tires did you run on your cyclocross? I ran Nokian W240's on my 29er and they worked well. Wondering if you found/made something better?

i just want to apologize for the result errors. I know you all want to see your name in lights and I would expect the same if I entered the race.
There really is no excuse for gettin' it all mixed up and we will do our best next year to have a solid system.

All your feedback is much appreciated and I am listening and taking notes for making improvements.

I like the idea of numbers on the bars instead of the back.
Just for the record, numbers were on the right side for both races... that is the side of the dock when you go by. BUT that isn't to say you were given wrong information.

Again, please pass along your feedback to me at chood@mn.rr.com or leave comments on www.urthelblog.blogspot.com (http://www.urthelblog.blogspot.com)

Congrats everyone! Sounds like a good time was had.

The combination of the weather and some other things that came up caused me to have a bad case of "wussing out". My loss, I guess. Hopefully I'll get a chance to race again in February!

You can see some pics at http://www.flickr.com/photos/grizzlyadam/sets/72057594056298276 (http://www.flickr.com/photos/grizzlyadam/sets/72057594056298276/)

Ah Eric, I see you in the pics. There's one sequence (probably within last 3 laps of the race) that clearly shows a guy in dark grey and black, then you, then Heath, then the guy in red and black with white helmet, then me. I got past Heath on the last lap just after the off-ice section. The pics of the last turn are kind of dark, but if you look closely it appears that you are just ahead of Matt Moore.

I used some Innova tires that I bought at Eriks. I had to really baby it in the turns, but I managed to stay upright the whole race. That soft ice section almost dumped me a few times though. I was using the cyclocross skills and running the whole off-ice section.

I also ended up helping out Josh Schwantes in the A race. He was running 29'er tubeless wheels with homemade studded tires, but he got a rear wheel flat. He swapped in my 700X35c rear wheel, which is actually 7-speed (the wheel is nearly 15 years old and my bike is 20 years old), and he had to flex the frame slightly to get the wheel to slide in. He said it worked out OK, but it helped alot to have the 29'er front wheel with 300+ studs on it.

You got me by literally 2 inches, I was so red lined!! Needed more than a 2to1. Good times!!

Not sure who was in the red jacket.

That was me (I think)! Mr. Moore seemed like he was itching for a sprint (maybe), so I was happy to oblige, though I was a lap down. Don't know who got who at the line.

I definately needed better than 32-20 gearing. But, when you only have one cog, you can't really be picky. Hopefully the weather gets cold so some races can be held in Feb.

I know that Dan Mr. Cyclocross, from BCR was in the top 3, not the bottom 3! he must have been at least one or two laps in front of most.

We should put our heads together next year to come up with a timing system for the laps... I know there are techies out there who would love the challenge. As far as the girls go, Maria 1st, myself 2nd, and Mara was 3rd. I don't know if you're counting the girl on the tandem, I don't know her name, however, my hat's off to both of them. I can't believe they were able to keep going through those turns.

Thanks so much for all the fun!

Just curious...
Does anyone know how many laps the leaders completed in the B race?
