This info comes to me via Salsa's minister of marketing. Now you know.
<DIR>I'm not sure their site is updated yet, but you can check out www.coffeemillski.com (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/www.coffeemillski.com) for directions.
They are planning to have two DH races this winter.
The first is set in stone: Feb 12. Registration closes at 12:30. Racing begins at 1pm. $10 entry plus lift ticket fee (you do get a $5 discount on lift ticket though).
The second date isn't set yet. Either Feb 26 or March 5 it looks like.
It is entirely non-technical racing down the ski slope. Ride whatever you like, although a slack head angle helps a lot when the front end starts washing out at speed.
You do get going pretty fast if you want.
Spread the word if you like. The more the merrier. Last year we did heats with 4 riders at a time. The year before it was 2 at a time.

Right on that is great news! I am trying to get Kevin at Steeple Chase to do one as well, I approached Afton and it is a no go there.

Maxxis High Roller 2.3's. This year will be Kenda Nevegal 2.3's.
ADAM! Where's the vid from last year? Show people that and everyone will be stoked!
Hopefully it will be on snow this year, and not little rivers down the hill! The nice weather made things wet and sloppy last year. Not nearly as fast as it could have been!

Beau,
I made a movie of the event last year.
I have a 33 meg version of it, but if I can't find a place to host it without bandwidth restrictions, I might have to crunch it down a bit.
Keep an eye on here and I'll post when I have something.

Ok,
Here is a really dirty, compressed version of the short movie I made from the Coffee Mill Spring Closing Races last year.
http://home.comcast.net/~kleincrazy/coffmill.wmv
Please right click and save and don't play straight from the link.
I hope to make it back again for the Feb Race this year as it should be a lot dryer....though with the winter we have had....

Hey can we show up and just ride and hang out that day? I dont really feel like racing
A few people did last year, you'll still need to pay all the fees, and they restricted us to one run last year, towards the end of the night I busted the videographer card and got a couple guys in the park.

Last year I learned that rim brakes were not the best idea for this event. It seemed that rigid, hard tails, and full suspensions did equally well. The main differences were the skill of those who piloted the bike. Assuming one were to ride just for fun of it, would it be better to ride a P.1 or Enduro?

This sounds like fun and I would like to give it a try. Could any of you suggest what type of tires to use, i'm guessing the bigger and knobbier the better. Did any one run studs or is the slope more snowy than icy? thanks matt
Looks like Mankato will be there.

Tony M
02-06-2006, 07:20 PM
I'll be there. I'm just running my regulaur tires, no-stud 2.1s. Not sure how much diff tires will make, all depends on the hill & snow I quess. Studded tires could be tougher to pedal on a warm low grade hill but would definatly help on any icy, washed out turns. Steep, groomed hill on a 20 degree day is anybodys guess.
All of above is speculation, I claim to know nothing. Let's hear from the experienced people.
TM
generally speaking coffee mill is always groomed, so studs won't do ya an good. you want the widest foot print you can make! Run low tire pressure, let the bike move around, stay loose! and most importantly have wide open fun!!!!!!!!!!! :D :jumpy:

I find it suprising that a place that allows ski-bikes everywhere won't let normal bikes out on the rest of the hill.
I have never been to Coffee Mill yet, but they are on the top of my list of skiing areas, just because they seem willing to allow some leniency with venturing from the standard.
We'll have to work on them about opening up some lift service biking (summer and winter)

I call BS on that one.... the ski hills all already have comprehensive insurance... Brad from Pioneer even checked with the insurance company for Afton and several others, and it is covered!!! THey even put it in writting.... But they still give that lame excuse... (remember when they claimed that same thing about snow boards?.... cause I do)
The insurance cop out is just that, a cop out.......
It's a private business and they can do whatever they want that's why.
anyway this is the first time in 4 yrs I won't be able to make it down to the race. Damn, I'll definitly make it to the next one!!!

That's a bold statement. Better check into that. There's a big difference between ski insurance and bicycle insurance.
There will be 7 guys from Mankato making the trip! That's more than the race had it's first year! Hope to see a good turnout!

That's a bold statement. Better check into that. There's a big difference between ski insurance and bicycle insurance.
I was refering to insuring the ski bikers... maybe I wasn't clear... sorry... but anyways, as I noted, it has been looked into by Brad from Pioneer, and he claims he got it in writing...
Lutsen and many many many places out west don't seem to have insurance issues with bikes/ski bikes/ snowboards/etc.. though...
nonetheless, really glad that they are allowing this... and I will be there... probably won't make it to race.... but will be bringing the helmet cam and taking shots... hopefully chase caming with the ski bike...
see you guys there....
I was refering to insuring the ski bikers...
Well yeah...If you hadi capped, you have to use a ski bike or something similar. Most hills will allow it if you hobble up there like a gimp, including Mt. Kato. But most would never let you close with anything resembling a bicycle. My frineds and I have tried as well.

Here's a little scoop. It was down to Dusty, a WI guy and me. I had to race the WI guy in the losers brackt to see who would go on to race Dusty, the undefeated little  on the Evil (lol, J/K Dusty!!!). The guy from WI was really fast. I had beat him earlier on, but wasn't sure I could take him again. I was tired. BUT, he got to the top of the hill and had a flat tire. So he gave up and I got a bi ( I really don't think I would have beat him, I was tired!).
So now it's between Dusty and me. I was still tired since I had just got done with a race, and just got off the lift. At the start I got the holeshot and held him back fo most of the race, but I was getting tired, and at the icy left turn coming out of the woods Dusty flew by me on the inside. Yes I said FLEW, not passed, it wasn't slow, he FLEW right past me! Super clean pass and after that there was nooooooo way I could catch him.
All in all I think it was a wonderful event. 35 racers is a step up from last year by a few. A lot of people I saw last year were not here this year, maybe in three weeks we can get a hold of those people and make it 50-60 riders.
Hellz yeah thanks Beau!

10:15...show up at Coffee Mill
10:16...notice there are more bikes in the parking lot than skis
10:20...large amount of people signing up
10:30...first weird look from a skiier as I get my bike off the car
10:31...try to "clip in" remember that I switched to platforms
10:32...ride up to chairlift...someone in front of me has trouble getting on the lift, drops bike, falls off, and gets run over by chairlift
10:33...chairlift slowed to 1/2 speed
10:35...on the lift
10:36...hear someone with a DH bike complaining about having to hold his 40+ lb bike on the lift
10:37...thankful for carbon fiber
10:40...top of the hill...here we go
10:45...down the hill...went slow...no crashes yet
11:00...a couple more runs getting the hang of this...tires working well (2.3 Continental Survival Pro with about 30 psi)
11:23...end up in the woods
11:24...find bike on the other side of trail...not sure what happened
12:00...riding well, staying out of ruts, wide turns, foot down, loving the bumps, jumps, and halfpipe
12:20..."the sharp left" finally takes me out...everyone there knows the turn. I was feeling good because I had made it every time despite seeing plenty of others bite it
12:35...cones? gates? what?
12:36...realize that we are going to have to go thru slalom gates for the race...start trying to go around them...this is starting to get real tough
12:37...watch a few others go down the hill...the heavy DH bikes are having a much better time digging into the snow around the gates
12:38...not thankful for carbon fiber...wishing I had my old steel frame from high school
12:45...meet a guy with an old school cruiser bike...coaster brakes and all
1:15...first race...time trial...slide out around gate two...rest of the run goes well
1:45...second race...head to head...my best ride of the day...but still get smoked...did manage to ride an unintentional front wheel endo for about 10 feet after the jump going into the narrow trail section.
2:15...third race...bad start...make up some ground on the flat section through the woods...not enough...lose by a bike length
2:16...realize that I am done for the day...I still had a great time.
2:20...get to car, put bike on top, grab snowboard
2:30...feel much more comfortable on the snow...ride down the trail, watch the rest of the racing...take some pictures (I'll post later).
Thanks to all who were out there. I had a great time being a DH guy for a day.
Who were the guys with the video equipment? Can we get a copy posted?

Holy crap this event kicked some a$$! I picked up a 99 FSR a few weeks ago and it was good to get it out and kick it around.Practice was pretty uneventful and I was really digging the 1st turn until the gates went up to slow us down. Ultimately I think it made the run better because you ended up bashing bars & fighting for position. Wiped out on the ice in the left turn coming out of the alley and dug a deep trench in the ice and my ankle.
Timed run- Wadded again about a hundred feet past the jump when my front washed out at full spin. Had to run back uphill to get bike and ended up in the 1:40s. Sure hope the guy with the video camera caught it.
1st heat- Lost a good race to Bo(?). 2nd at the start and got bogged down in the snow in the first tight right hander and watched him air out the jump from 20 feet behind. Made up most of the gap by the halfpipe but he blew me away in that section. Good race.
2nd heat (loser bracket)- Won
3rd heat (loser brackt)- Won. Had a slight lead and could hear the guys chain slapping a few feet behind me until all went silent at the jump. At the bottom he said he washed the front and went over the bars into the face of the jump.
4th heat (loser bracket) - Figured out how to start-Won
5th heat(1 race away from "best loser") Getting late with 6 losers left & we decide to run two 3 man races to speed things up. 3rd after the start, 1st is 20 feet ahead and 2nd is 5 feet after the tight right. Coming up the jump me and 2nd are side by side, 6 inches apart as we both soak up the bump and begin to fight for the hard line through the woods. Finally he says "take it!" and we line up in single file to chase 1st place who's pulled a decent lead while we were beating each other up. I almost lost it just before the leafy left and killed my drive ending up 2nd. Never saw the guy in 3rd but if you're out there, GREAT RACE!
Good times all around and I'll be bringing my dad (xc guy) out to the next one to compete. Thanks to all involved.

I tried uploading a few photos but I'm having trouble with the gallery. It says the photo uploads successfully, but then there is no thumbnail and no pic.
I was having trouble with the gallery the other day as well.
Maybe one of the site admins knows what's up, is something going on in the gallery, or is it all on my end? I've doen this a bunch of times before and never had a problem?????

Tony, you were one fast fella for being a new rider! Good job!

Hey all. I see I have been missing out. I stopped checking races in the winter and see i am missing some prime DH opportunitys. I am up here staring at my rig in Fargo waiting for spring break. I will have to go down to the dike and practice for the race. I will definetly have to try to get down for the March 4th race. The pics and videos look sweet.

Hey I think thats me in the far right pic.
As for the course the top was realy soft your front wheel worked as a rudder but thru the trees a good line started to develop the last turn to the half pie was a real white knuckler.
More pics, yeah I'm a slacker.
