Hi All -
It's now official - The Minneapolis Urban Singletrack is a reality! As of Wednesday evening, Dec 21st, 2005 the off-road cycling trails in Theodore Wirth Park that had previously been considered a demonstration project are now an approved part of the MPRB park system. The board vote was unanimous regarding both recommendations before them; to consider off-road cycling to be an approved activity in the parks that will be considered in future master plans, and that riding be continued to be permitted in the demonstration project area. Congratulations to all involved. I am very proud to have been a part of the project during my time in Minneapolis.
I would encourage folks to write or call their local MPRB commissioner and thank them for their vote of confidence in the cycling community on this matter and to let them know how much you enjoy the trails and that you appreciate their thoughtful consideration of both the demonstration project trails and future trails that the MPRB planning department may propose. I know they often hear complaints about the parks and it's good for them to occasionally hear positive feedback regarding the good things that they have done. You can see a list of the commissioners and locate the one for your district on the web page at http://www.minneapolisparks.org/default.asp?PageID=36 . Don't forget the at-large commisioners!
I believe the MPRB is planning a press release on the matter and I'm assuming a link to it will show up on their web page about the cycling trails at http://www.minneapolisparks.org/default.asp?PageID=858 .
- Pete McKinney - former MOCA President and board member (now residing in Boulder, CO, but hoping to be able to get back to the Twin cities often next summer). :-)
