The MORC board as the need for a more online collaborative tool (something that the forums or a simple web site does not provide). I immediately thought of Sharepoint, which seems to be a perfect fit for what is required. I even found a host with a decent price at:

http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Sharepoint

I'm curious if there is anyone out there that could come up with other options or something better? I see some Web Office sites, but they tend to charge upwards of three times as much for their service.

Our company relies on Sharepoint, so its what I know best... I figure there might be other techies out there with some other experience.

I'm guessing 50 user accounts is a minimum. Office integration is nice, but the ability to deal with all types of standard document formats (even MAC) is also required. Online contacts, calendar, document check-in/check-out and versioning functionality is also required. Searching of documents and their contents is a plus.

My recommendation from the research I've done so far would be with the site shown above, but I want to be sure to cover all bases and the membership is a great place to turn for this type of thing.

Here is a site that has a nice overview of Sharepoint hosting:

Hmmm?? So having an FTP location is not a good idea? Being that IE can now serve as an FTP client or that an FTP client is pretty cheap these days, why not just share files using FTP.

Did I say FTP enough??

I think the idea is to have more than just a place to dump documents but to have a place that brings people together in a virtual office. If we just dump documents and different people are each working on them, we now have problems. With a site like sharepoint one can "check out" a document, meaning nobody else can make chnges until it is checked back in. Plus, previous changes are automatically stored and can be reached in case someone were to want to go back.

The online contacts and calendar functions are nice as well, although the forum software does have some of that capability.

For me the best thing about sharepoint is that you can click on a document and check it out, open it up in word and start working on it all in one click. There is no saving locally required. When it auto-saves, it is saving to the site itself. When it is saved and closed it can be checked back in and people can be automatically notified (by email etc.) that a document has been changed or added. (this allows the casual member to stay up on whats happening without needing to go to the site all the time and check).

A huge value in this would be the work currently being done with the by-laws, and other documents such as our trail steward/dirt boss guide etc.

Basecamp (http://www.basecamphq.com/) might be a fit, kinda. It's more of a project management system but can help keep track of things. You can sign up one free project to give it a try. It's built on RubyOnRails (http://www.rubyonrails.com/) which is the fastest growing, new Web framework out there. Good stuff, makes Web applications easy. If your a Web programer hop on the wagon, it's gonna take over the Web! some say anyway..

I don't know about their sharepoint hosting but I have been a customer of 1and1.com for years and they are excellent! If you do decide to go through 1and1.com please use my referral link and I will donate what small percentage I get to MORC.
