2006 is fast approaching so I don't know that there is enough time to get a project like this completed by then, but the idea of doing a MORC calendar seems to have some interest so I thought I'd post up here for discussion and ideas.

well, since 2006 is basically here, maybe MORC could do an 18 month calander starting in june or something. that would give enough time(if you hurry) to get it done by then

Maybe set up a special gallery where people could submit photos/art work/words what have you for this project. Remove the names of the submitters and then have it juried somehow?

With all the photos people have submitted, I would think one could be made up fairly easily. I have no idea what it takes to make a professional grade calendar. I know how to make a cheesy one using my computer and printer......:).

The way things are now days, I am sure there are a ton of companies out there that can do a nice one up, but someone would have to research costs.

The problem with a lot of photos that might have been submitted is that they are not suitable for creating large enough photos that many calendars require. The more you enlarge the photo the more the photo degrades.

I'd look forward to trying my hand at entering some images but would rather look at this as a possible 2007 idea so that the proper amount of time and effort could be put into it.

I wonder if local shops would have any interest in selling something like this? Any other club's already creating something like this that we could learn from?

It also might be nice to have it planned well enough that major dates could be included on the calendar. Race Dates, Summit dates, Opening and Closing dates, Big events in mountain biking history, etc.

With the way our community works, probably not very doable, but something to think about.

One thing to think about is you can always collage many pictures for a month to make up for the lack in original resolution leading to lower quality when blown up.

Just a couple of random thoughts.

What he said.

I'd be up for a photo calendar, even making something of a contest out of it. Have people submit entries throughout the year. Have a small group (of non-entrants, maybe a few of our sponsors, shop types, etc.) narrow it down to the top 20-25. Then display them at the MTB Summit and have people vote on them. The top 12 vote getters have their images put in the 2007 MORC Calendar (and perhaps get a little schwag for their troubles).

the dates are a good idea if it would work. could also put a mark in the days when there is usually a group ride.

the collage isnt a bad idea either

I wonder if local shops would have any interest in some advertising space??? Usually done easily by having top side the pic, bottom the calander with a stip below that with an advertisement. Also coupons/deals they could advertise. Sell them the advertising space ideally for the cost of producing the calanders and then sell them to anybody who would want one and all proceeds go to MORC or a MORC project, good way to raise funds, I know I probably wouldn't submit any pics, but I'd buy one.

There's a possibility of two different kinds of calendars. One would be the more artsy, photographic type. Since the lead times are longer to produce something like this, it might be light on dates for events.

One thing we are going start doing with the Off-Road newsletter is publishing a quarterly calendar with more of the trailwork/group ride/meeting/event dates. This way, the dates are mor elikely to be accurate, and we can include things that aren't planned up to a year in advance.

And we do offer advertising space to shops and businesses in the newsletter. Doing a separate calendar and selling space/sponsorship has also been discussed.

I'm only in if I can see that sexy picture of James in the tight shirt with the fairy look in his eyes. Now that alone is worth the price of the calendar.:D

the dates werent a neccesity or anything, just an idea. i do like the idea of having the artsy photographic calendar though, because people would be more likely to buy it and hang it somewhere. again, just ideas

Chances are, most of those pics submitted on the forums have a larger counter part that created them. I know I reduce mine before I submit them, but most of my images in their original form are pretty big.

It would just be a matter of contacting some of the people and finding out if the have a 2048 (width or height) or bigger version. Would that be big enough for printing?

hey, that's my bread and butter you're talking about.

in all seriousness, i try to be very careful and conservative about the role that advertising plays in our communications. basically, i try to balance giving the people who sponsor us an opportunity to reach bikers, with making sure that MORC and the people who make up the organization are always the primary focus.

if there's an opportunity to help put more money into trails by defraying the cost of certain projects with advertising, i think we're obligated to at least consider it. but not if it means losing our credibility as an organization.

I really like this idea... something like a calendar can be as fun to put together (with great ideas like those posted so far) as it is useful the next year.

I can see a months with action shots, trail pictures, trailworker of the year, photo of the year, the sexy MORC board, the trail fairy, featured project of the year... might be hard to fit it all into 12 months.

I think if someone were to figure out the minimum/maximum size of calendar photos we could build a place in the Gallery to hold the larger sized images.

Not to disrupt some good brainstorming but I think sticking to good solid action/scenic shots for the main picture each month and including smaller photos of trail work/people would be a better seller. It might open itself to more than just the MORC community that way.

yup, i know you're one of them.

it's not always about making money. trails, at one time, didn't take money to build.

i'd think if morc could made a couple $$ of each calendar, screw the adz.

How about having a contest each month? A biking related photo that is taken sometime during that month being the main picture, with maybe some trail work/runner up photos in a smaller size. Would really capture the variety of trails (and riding opportunities) that the state offers. Maybe have a tentative rule of no trail used more than twice or something. Just a brainstorm.

I like this idea. Maybe one nice main shot, plus a collage of smaller photos out of the archives for each month. Then, the resolution of the smaller photos wouldn't be as important, but they would still add interesting material to the calendar.

We could use the small pictures to fill in the empty days at the beginning and end of the month.

maybe, but some people use those spots for general reminder notes. i was thinkin maybe use the smaller ones right above the calendar(like in the header) and then some washed out ones "spotted" through-out the month
