Harmon/Salem Tuesday 12/6 7:00 pm.

Is anyone interested in Harmon/Salem on Tuesday night? It's going to be cold, but not so bad that some hot cider and a festive Hawaiian shirt can't warm it up.

Remember: Technically it is still fall, and fall is the best time of the year for biking. But with all of the talk about winter biking, it seems like a good idea to *start* getting ready for winter.

AND it will be way better than standing at a bus stop
OR hanging out at a bar looking for all the loose women that left because of the smoking ban.
AND it'll also be more fun than figuring out how big of a loan you'll need for that new H2.

So, If I see two others looking for a nice fall ride, I'm in. So, please post up.

Wierd tip of the day: Get a couple of those chemical hand warmers and tape them to your water bottle to keep it from freezing. That actually worked for me last week.

I have a really nasty cold right now, but I'm going to play it by ear and hopefully be there. Want to try out my new home-brew studs. I got a better propane heater too, so we ought to be nice and warm post-ride.

I should be there...

Don't know if I will be able to provide the warm beverages though, I might be going right from work/errands to the trail.

I just need to remember to switch out to 34/20 today. 36/20 was just a little bit to steep last week, and this week there will be more snow on the ground.

Bang, #2 right here, its on.

I get to try out the new bike, the new light, and harmon park, all in one trip, sounds like a recipe for something to go wrong!

When are the Saturday Harmon rides going to start up again? Tuesday night is my ski class, but I'm still jonesing for a really good ex-Salem ride.

We Ride!

Looking forward to seeing that new light, Pete. As far as I know, you are the only other person so far to build the AA packs.

Jeff, just put the studded tire on the front and join us anyway. We are riding on snow, not ice. So good knobbies will be more important than studs. Erik rode Leb on Thursday night without studs, and he was still faster than me (which is not saying much).

For entertainment, we are featuring John Lundell (Mr. Quick Tire Change) with his brand new homemade studs.

... and hopefully no more tire changing demonstrations. ;)

Or... We wait  The "best" part of new home studs is the not getting the tire liner quite right and having multiple flats.

I'm out for Tuesday, but tentatively in for the following Tuesday.

I am going to join you on this ride. Have to try out the new studded tire. Would it be better to have studs up front or in back? I am thinking back for more speed, and I figure I would be able to keep the same gear.

I've been told to put em' in the front first... more control that way.

Looks like a few of us will be trying out new stud tires. Hope someone brings a spare tube or two! ;)

You should eventually do both tires. You will want the front for control and the rear for traction to get moving. If you can only do one, I would go for control before traction. You don't want to get going too fast and then not be able to steer.

I don't need no stinking studs, so I'll have spare tubes with (as I always do), and hopefully no use for them.

Who needs control! I thought a good ride must contain atleast a couple nice falls.

I have a wide tire with good side tread up front, which I hope will give me control. It not those riding will get to wittness some (hopefully fast) falls.

For this month someone else is going to have to set up and lead a Saturday Ride.

They have us working every weekend through the new year.

Maybe in January I will get them rolling as training for the Ice Races.

I also have been trying to figure out how to ride in daylight... sigh...

grrrrr...

Just hacked open the bottom of my foot. If it closes up good enough I will be out tonight, but as it feels now, don't wait for me.

The last thing I want to do is try riding with a wounded foot, Diabetic, Cold Weather, and an open foot wound is just not a good idea.

Have Fun All.

I'm still not feeling too well so I'm 50/50 right now. If'n ya don't see me I'll be at home nursing my cold.

They're dropping like frozen flies.

James, if it helps I have a roll of duct tape in the van. It is a good substitute for stitches (until you try to pull it off).
John, when that cold air hits your lungs it'll kill those germs instantly.

I hope to see you guys out there, but understand your reasons if you decide to skip it.

It's already up to zero, so it should be a nice fall ride tonight. :jumpy: I'm still planning to go.

Trails are still fine to ride w/o studs. Just don't try riding only rubber down rutted icy roads or you'll end up with something like this:

Except for my hands, I actually over dressed for my ride in this morning. It's kinda neat when its this cold, all the road slop freezes and the roads are dry, so much nicer than the teens and twenties when any snow unplowed roads = total slop fest.

I ran the batteries totally dead last night, so hopefully these chargers are doing their job. The charger themselves are warm, so they must be working, and the batteries so far have not heated up (12hrs in to the 15 estimated). See you guys tonight.

I am now relegated to the don't wait for me list as well. It's not due to the cold, but other issues. I hope to see you out there, I could use a ride.

Answer = yes... but it was fun and a good workout. Should put my cold recovery back a few more days, but well worth it.

It really didn't seem that cold out until after we were finished, and standing around drinking cold beer. Now, THAT was stupid. Hopefully, we'll do it again next week.

Sorry I couldn't make it. I could really use a ride, but... (Start the list of excuses)

I really busted up my thumb riding at Theo on Sunday when I crashed.
I'm fighting off some sort of nasty cold.
Season tickets to Children's Theater. Had to go to Aladdin with the kids.
Okay.. excuses 1 and 2 wouldn't really stop me from riding, but #3 and keeping the wife and kids happy do. I'll try to catch everybody another time.

I was there as well, Ken. The audience seemed smaller than normal last night. The guy who played the genie really needs to find another gig, he's kind of like Robin Williams in that he always seems to play the same character.

Sorry for the thread hijack.

I would agree with you... He reminds me of Chris Farley only maybe with a little more talent. He was in Go Dog Go, Sleeping Beauty, Monkey King too?, etc... It works for the kids though... they get a laugh and that whole repetition thing seems to be somewhat important for the little ones. I'd have to say that Aladdin was far better than the last several productions. Not sure if we will continue with season tickets though!

His name is Reed Sigmund. When the family is waiting for the curtain to go up, discussion with my wife usually includes is "So what part do you think he will have in this play?" I agree that the production was great, costume budget must have been huge, esp in comparison to some recent productions.
