Hillside is now open for the season! Hit the dirt!!

I rode two laps at Hillside early this a.m. Conditions were nearly ideal. I was reminded immediately that Hillside is alive. The entrance has a tree which now leans to the south a bit further than I remember last year, which allows it to give you a welcome pat on your back or helmet...beware!
There are also two trees down in the 3rd section, which won't cause any crashes, but were too big for me to move or saw with my little folding saw.
Finally, no summer aromas yet coming from the dump area.
All good.

Yeah, there is also wildlife there too! When I was doing trailwork a month ago I seen the Hillside deer, they looked good. Squirls galor, rabbits, etc.. Those trees will be removed soon. Trailwork this weekend to fix things up!
Has anyone been out there since the rainy spell? I am hoping it will be dry enough for a Sunday ride.

Rode @7am this morning. Course was soft and supple and the ride was guilt-free. Hillside drains incredibly well.
There is a large tree down very early in section 3, immediately after the downhill switchbacks.

Rode Hillside at 10:00 am today. Trail is perfect and fast. Ride it.
Eating a McDonald's breakfast, while surely never a great idea, is an especially BAD idea 45 minutes before starting Hillside. Trust me.
I'd insert the hurl dude here if I knew how : )
Thanks to my buddy Backyard for pushing me to that point. Good times!
We stopped to rest and stared at doe down at 15 yards for at least 2 minutes. She was like, "Damn you're breathing hard!"

Cool, I'll try to get out this afternoon. Ya, the deer there are tame. Last year I was doing trail work walking the trail and got very close and they didn't care. Kinda cool.

Saw a car at Hillside on my way home from work today, so I pulled in to try and discourage them from riding (figuring my uniform would automatically win most arguments for me). To my suprprise, the couple was getting back in their car, despite wearing biking clothes and a couple of new-looking Treks on the roof of the car. They evidently took a look at the trails and decided they didn't want to get the ensemble dirty. Or maybe they knew better!
Didn't even have to get out of the car.
Ride safe...when it dries out,

I was there yesterday at about 5:30 and there were about 6-7 cars and Hillside normally gets busier after 6 if memory serves me correctly.

I rode hillside on sunday, which was I think my 5th time ever there. I have a new love for that place. Sometime in the 1st of two laps with my brother, we realized we could really lean the bike hard into the corners. We started relaxing more and being really aggressive at the same time if that makes sense. It was such a blast, no pun intended. Just nonstop excitement. The only downside was some sandy ouside edges to some corners, but the traction was so velcro-like that we could hold the inside line at a good clip. Good work Blast!

I rode last night about 5:45pm. The trial was in good shape with the usual sandy spots but otherwise dry. It was a great evening for riding. I have to say this may be my favorite trial in the cities!
While riding I found a cycle computer. If anyone is lost one on the trail send me a message with the brand or description and I will get it back to you.

The trail totally kicked my butt, wow. Made it just before the rain came down. Noticed a lot of sand in the corners of switchbacks right as you'd be in a tight corner swinging uphill. It seems like there are a lot of people making divots in downhills which were catching my wheel. Also hit some bodyslappers that were thorny!

Has anyone ridden Hillside since the storms went through Saturday night, 9-16-06? We have a race scheduled on Tuesday the 19th and it's not uncommon for a couple trees to fall down across this trail during a good storm. I won't have a chance to get out there to take a look until Monday night. It would be nice to find out today (Sunday), and then I could plan on trying to take care of anything large on Monday. That, or the regular trail crew can get a heads-up on it if they've got time to deal with it.
Thanks for the help...

Rode three midday laps yesterday in the cool bright sunshine, fast and fun. Seems like I only make it out here a couple times a year so it is hard to tell how conditions vary but the leaf fall I think has really helped fill and pad the trail. Had to do a bit of minor debris removal on the first lap but otherwise fantastic. Thank goodness no one is blowing the leaves off of these trails as it really would be a lot more raw without them. Minor OT rant: I understand leaves can cause water pooling but isn't this where dirt comes from, why not deal with pooling as it comes? O.K. I'm better now.
Panman
10-15-2006, 11:12 AM
Exaclty for that reason we don't clear the leaves off the trail. They seem to help the trail erosion in the fall and bring things back together for the spring. Glad you had a great ride!

I understand leaves can cause water pooling but isn't this where dirt comes from
My understanding is, you don't want organic matter as the trail tread. That is why you scrape the layer off to get to the mineral soil below. Then you have a stable mix of sand, small gravel, and earth that becomes concrete hard with use (Wirth). I would imagine BC hasn't enough because of the sand content there and might benefit from more organic matter. Hillside probably doesn't get the use that Wirth does, so the erosion could probably be kept in check with adding earth, but Wirth and Leb would be a mess if you did that.
Don Youngdahl
10-17-2006, 02:16 PM
........I understand leaves can cause water pooling but isn't this where dirt comes from.....................
That's correct. Page 210 of my IMBA trail Solutions book offers the following as one of the strategies for dealing with sandy areas, and I'll quote it verbatim:
"Make it Sticky
You can alter the sand to make it stick together. Clay based soil binders will balance the texture. Organic material gathered nearby or imported mulch can also help. When cutting a trail in a sandy area, reserve all the organic material upslope of the bench cut. When the trail tread is complete, add the duff back onto the tread and tamp it into the sand. This will improve the texture of your soil."
--------------------------------
While it doesn't say specifically to not rake the leaves, the the principle is obvious - leaves are organic matter that is beneficial to a sandy trail.

I am sure that the trail boss will fill you in, but it appears that they take the stuff from the compost pile and use it on the trail sometimes. From what I have seen, with good success.
The trail was very sandy at the turns at the bottom of hills - particularly after a big rain in Aug. Since then the sand was compacted with ridding to some extent, but it seems that the leaves, sticks and moisture have really helped out this fall.
Wirth and Lebannon are clay and hard as rock. I can see where getting the leaves off will help.

Trail was in great shape sunday 11-20. Leaves are on the trail ion some sections, but traction didn't suffer much. The ground was frozen, which was nice. A few spots became slick as the sun eventually melted the suerficial layer. Trail rode great though.

Does anyone know if Hillside is still open?
RichZilla
12-05-2006, 09:09 PM
Yes, the City of Elk River (who owns the Park) has told me that you can ride the trail throughout the winter. The rules of wetness still apply though. If it begins to melt and the trail gets soft, you should stay off it until it re-freezes or dries up. We don't want to encourage any type of trail erosion now do we?

I'll be out there Saturday and some of next week to start knocking down the snow with some snowshoes that I have borrowed. It's a little too deep right now to be much fun on a bike. Too much work.
Those 2 or 3 tracks out there were left by some guys I know. They are damn good winter riders and it took them almost 2.5 hours to get around the entire trail. It needs packing. If anyone has some snowshoes, put them to use and get out there! I will be.

3 of us rode yesterday ( Fatties Fit Fine aka Pug)..... it is riding at about 2 times summer speed. There is no dicernable evidence of snow shoes as the trail is narrow ( they get snow there more than other areas this year ). They had a little snow yesterday too - between an inch or two. The other two guys have ridden once per week the last month.
It needs ridders...... bring your lungs and your legs....if you go off trail you will pay the price...but what a good workout... keep this up and summer riding will be so easy and more fun.
Isnt there a race at Elk River this month

I am planning a trail work session for next weekend to prepare for the upcoming race. Anyone who can come out and help on the 10th or 11th would be greatly appreciated. Mostly snowshoeing and trimming on Saturday, and mostly riding on Sunday. I will try to get there between 9 & 10 on Saturday morning, probably a little earlier on Sunday. It would be great to get about 10 riders or more for a Sunday beat down. Anyone?

Okay, the weekend schedule is...(for February 10th & 11th)
I am picking up 3 pairs of snowshoes at the Maple Grove REI when they open at 10am on Saturday morning. Then straight from there to Hillside. Should be there before 11am. They are all going to be used for the first part of the day, if anyone wants to use a pair later on, come out there and let me know. We'll be brining our own munchies and probably stay there until dark. Then beers and burgers at Maynard's in Rogers after that. On Sunday I think we'll get there about the same time, just before 11am, and then start riding laps until we can't pedal anymore. Hopefully a good 4 hours+ of punishment. Team Ricoh...ya got your ears on? Saturday is snowshoe and maintenance day, and Sunday is riding day. Come and help for whichever you can. Thanks!

I spent over 7 hours out there today snowshoeing with the help of a few others that came and went throughout the day. We started at the end of the trail (section 4) and worked backwards through to the middle of section 2 when it was completely dark. We didn't think it would take so long, but we spent a lot of time on the climbs grooming them. Big thanks to 'krazykatie' and her daughter for making it out there early and putting in a solid 2 hours of good packing. Jimmy also made it out for a few hours and then threw in the towel when he could longer walk.:D Eddie showed up with some much needed Subway sandwiches early in the afternoon and was basically on a rampage with me until darkness when we quit. Also thanks to the ghost worker Paul (I think that's what you said your name was). He was just finishing his 'workout' when we arrived. He had a sled tied to his waist and it had the two biggest, heaviest cement blocks I've ever seen in it. And Dave on the Pugsley did plenty of riding and packing today as well. Gave us some good feedback and suggestions too. I think the biggest thanks has to go out the Team Ricoh/LCR guys who have consistently been riding out there for the last few weeks. The trail is in excellent shape because of there efforts. Remember, tomorrow everyone rides a bike so show up with yours and put it to good use!

the top soil is 3-5 inches perhaps and sand underrneath so the there is alot of fall over. Anyone willing or wanting to walk it can help to keep the trail clear. Strong body or chain saw is needed sometimes.

I was not there as long as I had hoped, but did not see any mountain bikers. One of the runners had a bike in the back seat of his car, but that was where it stayed, and was the only one I saw.
There is at least one dandy helmet splitter in there, just down trail from the start. Glad I was walking!

It might have been dark before I got through all three spots that you cleared. Great job. I got to ride for a couple hours instead of saw trees up. I agree with the decision to leave the tree right at the start of section 1. You barely have to duck to get under it. If we take out every challenge, we might as well pave the trail! Ha ha ha! The conditions today are wonderful! There are a few (three I think) new trees that must have came down last night. Two of the three are entirely doable if you don't mind dinging up the old big ring. The third is doable, but use EXTREME caution. It is a double, and the spacing between the two logs is just big enough to suck in your front wheel. Get out and ride!

Try to keep your head up and look far down the trail. You tend to be 'drawn in' by the speed and obstacles appear larger when you stare at them as you approach. Your body tends to go forward when this happens, so try to relax and get rearward a little. I wish people would wear one of these when they start riding MTB's. Of course they couldn't scratch their ears with their cleats.:) ;)

Like they always say, "Look where you want to go" It can be difficult to learn to ride this way, but try to remember it each time you catch yourself looking off the trail. Do like I do, and repeat it to yourself... out loud if you want. It works!
"Look where you want to go! Look where you want to go! Look where you want to go! Look where you want to go! Look where you want to go!"
or
"Don't look at the tree! Don't look at the rock! Don't look at the root! Don't look at the chasm! Don't look at the dog! Don't look at the monkey!"
Bug spray is usually only needed right before dusk. Before that, it's normally too hot.

There was one heavy but skinny tree down between sections 2 & 3. I tried to move it but it was too heavy. I would describe the trail as tacky and the sandy sections were sticky but I think the majority of the trail was alright. Some of the sand was getting pushed down the trail too. I'm surprised the group of guys riding together did not move the tree unless it was really jammed in there. And don't cry if a girl passes you. :eyeroll: :jumpy: Hopefully you will become a BLAST/MORC member to reconcile your sins.

This Trail is fantastic and well worth the drive from the cities!!
Last night it was in great riding condition. One low tree down, that I was unable to ride under and 1 or 2 soft spots but nothing that was causing damage to the trail..
I cant wait to ride this trail again!!!:D
Oh Yeah, and Nicole I am with you on this one, it was our first time on this trail and it took us 80 mins to make the complete lap, not to bad for a newbie : ) Hopefully next ride I can shave a few minutes off that time. Let me know if you ever want to hit the trail together.

Rich -- Thanks for the trail work -- the trail was great!
Elk River is in great shape, all trimmed and no itch weed slapping your thighs. There must have been some good rain a few days back as the trail was still tacky. Watch for some sand in the corners though. Still plenty of roots to thank your rear suspension which is one of the reasons I love this trail. There was obvious work done and thanks to who ever for your hard work.

On wcco.com go to the Local Weather for a city
Click on "Local Reporting Stations" (right under the Current Conditions).
Click on the Local station you want - you'll see the data for that day
Under the graphs there is a "Select Another Date" section - pick the day you want and Click "Go".
Here's one for Elk River

With as windy as it is, and knowing how many trees blow down during storms, I wouldn't want to ride out there today. We put in another 7 total hours of work out there today. It needed it. There was about 8 inches of fresh powder on top of a very well packed base. It was just like the first dump of the season. Sugar snow.
We cleared some snow from the trail to see what the old base was like (it snowed the day after we had it dialed in) and it was good. In fact it was perfect. You could have ridden a CycloCross bike through there. Bummer we got the big dump on top of it.:cryin: Oh well. Hopefully we'll get another thaw-then-freeze before the race.
We were able to get another 4 laps of packing on the entire 7 mile loop. We also packed the crap out of section two an extra 14 times and got it almost completely down to the old base. The rest of the trail will need time to setup, a few days would be nice. Some above 32 degree weather would be better. Thaw and freeze is the key.
My opinion for riding at Hillside for the next few days is that you will want to use a Pugsley. If you have one of those, you'll be able to ride the entire loop. If you have any tires narrower than 3.7" wide, better wait a little. You would be able to ride a lot of it, but I'd rather have the perfectly smoothed base freeze in the texture that's there than to have a few chainsaw marks frozen into it.
IF you really want to ride out there, try riding through section two only. I think the majority of it will be OK. The long straights will be the softest because it was tougher to clear the snow off to the side. You should be able to loop it over and over. We will try to get section one ripped down next.
Feel free to head out there with your snowshoes and help the cause!
I'll be out there to keep an eye on it and keep updates posted.

We have just completed another 5.5 total hours of trail packing this evening. Once this warm cycle ends, and the snow freezes up, this trail will once again be ready for everyone. Section two actually is totally ridable now, even in the warmer temps. That's how good it was packed the last time we were out there. The Pugs have been hammering out the laps to buff in the main line, and we've been consistently packing it with the power equipment about once a week.
The next time the temps drop below freezing, head out there and let 'r rip!

I did some trail recon with Jimmy 2-Pins today for tomorrow's event. It is perfect. I've never ridden a better trail in the winter. I expect Sunday's lap times to be very close to summer lap times. If you have your tire pressure set properly, and you don't sketch out, you will be able to ride the entire course without walking. That's with normal mountain bike tires too. Still no studs needed. The 1/4 inch of snow that fell is perfect for the tires to bite into.

Right now, due to the rising temps, Hillside should only be ridden when the ground is firmly frozen. This means riding in the mornings is usually best, as it is still frozen from the cooler night temps.
If you are riding, and you can see that you are leaving ruts all the way down into the dirt (because the snow is slushy), we ask that you not continue riding until it freezes up again.
Thanks!

Hillside is up and running for the season! Right now the only negative feedback that I've gotten for the trail is that there are still quite a few leaves down, and some sand build up in spots. Most of that should be taken care of during the trailwork sessions next weekend... speaking of which, if you can make it out there, please do. We've got enough work for 50 people so bring a friend or three. We're starting at 8am on Saturday and Sunday, April 26th and 27th.

Ha ha ha! That was me.:embarass: I knew one of the guys we passed would make note of it in here. I needed to get some accurate mileages for the flyer for the Duathalon coming up this summer. I don't have a bike computer, so I had Jimmy 2-pins with me. He just calibrated his computer. The other two guys with me were fellow sisters of LCR. The reason we needed to go backwards through Sections 1 and 2, was because of the way the leadout and laps work for the running legs of the race. Last year I caught a lot of crap because the total distances I advertised were off by 3/10ths of a mile. Picky picky. Not this year.
We were very polite and yielded the right of way to everyone though, did we not? (Unless you were the Trail Pickle, or were with him... ELBOWS OUT!!!)
Only one rider flatted. The other guy was there to help him get it repaired quicker. He actually double-flatted.:D The Goat can really punish a set of tubes.
Hopefully we'll see ya out there again, only next time we'll be going the proper direction.

I haven't taken down the ropes across the opening yet, because it isn't signed properly, and we don't want someone unknowingly rolling down there. It is finished enough to ride, but INSPECT it first. There is still some buffing to do, and the first 20% of the line has more to get added. Go take a look at it, on foot, then decide if you're up for it.

The first section of the Beginner Loop is now ready to be ridden in. The start of it is up in the NorthWest corner of the parking lot (opposite corner of the main trailhead). This loop will basically follow along the outer perimeter of the main trail. Parts of it will jump out onto that old access road on the west edge of the park, and then duck back into the woods. We built this trail very family friendly, so bring the wife and/or little ones, and check it out. We will be continually adjusting this loop as we see how it rides. We will try to keep it three to four feet wide all the way through. For now, when you reach the power lines, just follow them to the left back to the center access road, and then to the left again back to the front parking lot. Repeat as necassary. :) We will continue to work on completing the loop around sections 2 and 3 as time permits. It takes a while with only two guys.

I rode the new beginner loop a couple times today, and it's definitely needing to get packed down. The soil isn't compacted much, so it's a little spongy. (spongy = harder pedalling) Buffing needed too. When you get to the power lines, don't ride the fresh trail, it's not fully cut. Just use the ATV access path to get back to the road. We will be buffing and smoothing that entire loop as time goes on. We even left a fun little skinny/log ride along it so that the 'man' of the family can show off a little. :)

Trail was in really good shape today. railing some corners and riding fast. The new tetter totter was interesting - like the tar on top for traction and it was solid. I kept waiting for the back side to come down....started to feel like I was ridding to the sky....
the new rock gardens are ridding better than last week.
Now the new expert spur was open today so got on it.....It will be a while before I try jumping the gap. And I dont think I will ever try jumping the new bridge - didnt ride BMX. Oh and the top lob I see is now removed from the new reroute for downhill, this makes entry nice. And man can you get moving now.....ripping up the other side of the ravine catchin air off the rock or root and having to break at the top to make the turn.
All in all great new changes add ons and features this year....been some busy work going on there.

I was there this morning at 9. Slick corners and some standing water in spots. Walked part of the trail but did not want to ride and rut it up. Might be better later in the day even?

I would think it would be wet still, we got quite a bit of rain last night. I haven't been over to check it out though. Maybe later in the day if it stays sunny and dry.

I found this on-line weather station near Hillside Park
http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KMNELKRI6
Sometimes useful. I don't know how accurate. Nice to look at when there are scattered thunderstorms to see if rain hit the area or not. Also provides some gage of the amount of rain over a few days.
I don't know exactly how to gage the impact of rain, but you can see that it rained almost 2" over Jun 11 and 12.

new hilly trail?
Ummm.... Yeah.
We just opened up a new loop called "BallBuster" in the southeast corner of section 4. There's a few climbs in it, and one of them is probably now the toughest climb on the trail. I'm sure everyone wanted more climbs so Joel, Don, Terry, and more of the DirtWirx gang whacked out another loop of difficulty making section 4 harder and longer by a little under a half mile. Heh heh heh.....
Enjoy!
FYI, the name started when they found a 16# Brunswick Black Beauty bowling ball in the woods while cutting the trail.:eyeroll:

I was lucky enough to ride hillside for the first time yesterday. Living down in Bloomington makes getting up to Elk River a rare event…
What a nice trail! Loved the flowing single track, varied terrain, and the uphill switchbacks, in a masochistic sort of way ;-)
The trail crew that builds and maintains this trail deserves a big thanks to all who use it!!!! Thanks!
On another note, I ride a 2:1 gear ratio on my single speed and found it to be very good for this trail. This is the same ratio I ride at Murphy. There were only 2 climbs that gave me a problem and it was my poor line and not the gear ratio that did me in J

is this trail all what people are saying it is?
RichZilla
08-12-2008, 09:07 PM
Well, it's a little over 7 miles long, tight & twisty singletrack, and has several 'advanced-level' trail features scattered throughout. Most of the climbs and descents are short, some even a little steep. I don't think I would consider the trail "epic", but it is definitely different. We have been trying to build the kind of features that you won't see on any other trail. (Red Bull Berm, Limestone Staircase, Diesel Drive, Log Table, X2 Freeride Line, etc.)
Since you're about 3 hours away, it would be a pretty good commitment on your part to make the drive. I guess if you could round up a couple of buddies to make a good day trip out of it and split the gas money, that would be the thing to do.
I think you'd be happy about making the drive if it didn't cost you $50 each in gas money. I recommend considering it with a couple buddies. Plenty of places to get good grub after the ride too.
If you ride it, let us know what you think!

this trail is really pretty awesome, a trail that you can make as hard as you wish, there are no real huge climbs, but awesome signage for "blast" trail sections and the most friendly folks of any of the metro trails I have ridden so far (been in MPLS 6 months) worth the drive even if you can't split the cash on gas.

Another new feature at Hillside!!! Just rode it over lunch and it was sick as ever - I love the teeter-totter, but the latest feature, which I will call the "stepped-ladder-bridge" is cool as heck! I was talking with Don after I hit it told him thanks from all of us and how much we appreciate he and Rich's efforts out there! What a great park! Ride on!

The course was in great shape this morning at 8:30am, however approximately halfway through my lap it started to sprinkle ( i could hear it but not feel it) and then midway through section 4 it turned into a downpour at which time took the nearest exit to the road and packed up. This course drys out well, and I would guess by this evening 5pm or so it should be back to good shape.:)

The only thing that may shoot you off your bike is the gap jump or if you rail a corner and a few leaves give way to your traction.
The only thing hunting deer out there would be a big o kitty cat!!!

RichZilla
11-16-2008, 09:28 PM
The trail was perfect today up until about 1pm, then a few of the corners got a little slippery, but other than that, the trail is dry. The recent rains have not left the trail wet.
There were quite a few riders out there today that stopped to thank us while we were getting some sweet new trail cut.
If the temp is below 32 degrees, the trail will be frozen and perfect to ride. (unless the sun is shining directly on it) If the temp is above the melting point of ice, then watch for it to get greasy in a couple spots.
Very, very, very good riding after dark tonight!!!

The trail was in great condition both days this weekend, despite some above-freezing temperatures.
On Saturday there was a light dusting of snow in the woods, but the ground was still frozen and the sun didn't seem to soften it up at all.
Today was warmer, but the trail was still in firm shape. It seems the bikes that went through Saturday picked the snow dust off the trail, which helped keep it dry when the temperature reached an unseasonably warm 36°.
