View Full Version : Wirth trailwork noon Sunday 11/20
There will be a trailwork session this Sunday, November 20, at noon.
The par three parking lot is closed for the season. Park at Wirth lake and ride or walk to the corner of Highway 55 and Theodore Wirth Parkway.
Please bring your own rake(s)!
We will be removing leaves from the trail and possibly doing minor deberming. Someone will check the trail before ten o'clock on Sunday and post here if it is too muddy or if the leaves are frozen solid.
This may be our last session of the year -- hope to see you out there.

Any reason you can't park at the main clubhouse lot? It's not like there is going to be a crowd there. :)
Hey, I'm just spouting the official party line.
Yipes, I'm either turning into "the man" or my mother. I'm not sure which would be worse. :eyeroll:

The way it's been going, we may need parking for the bike trail in winter. People won't want to bike so far to get to the trailhead, so they may haul the bike over to be in the woods. Theo is open all year, as long as conditions apply. I wonder if this will happen?

Well, I won't have net access at home, so I'm showing up at noon regardless. If anyone wants to meet me, I'll either be doing trailwork or going for a path ride depanding on the weather.
Time to go home and drink beer! :beer_yum:

Thanks to everyone who showed up today to rake the entire trail clear of leaves!
This was the last trailwork session of the season, and everyone at MOCA would like to thank all those who've helped out this year and have made this arguably the most popular trail in the metro.
We hope to see at least as good of a turnout as tonight when the snow flies and we commence to shoveling the trail to minimize trail damage during the winter riding season.

Yeah!! We rocked those stupid leaves!
(BTW Chris, sorry about the rake. I hope you blamed it all on me.)

See if I let you borrow my shovel during the winter months!

In my defense, I think it was my attempt at replicating your wicked rake technique that caused the handle-related failure...

All of you should be our heros. I saw the core group leaving the trail last night at Twilight. That is hard and not well recognized work. I am going to try to get to the meeting on the 28th and let people know that a lot of positive trail maintenance is occuring at Wirth b/c of unsung heros. Trail stewardship and park use have only improved with your collective efforts. The Park Board should evolve your role from one of "Probation" to one of leadership by example.
There is a silent majority out there who are thankful MOCA/MORC's efforts and we thank you.
Huge thanks to Aaron, Chris, Scott, Shad and Shawn for spending at least an eternity raking. The trail looks lovely.
Thanks also to Sam for fixing a tree problem we didn't realize we had.
Now really, couldn't we just get a snowblower or one of those sidewalk friendly Bobcats or something? Who'd want to do trail maintenance by hand? ;)

We will get a much better workout if we shovel all of it. I mean, shoveling the whole trail won't be that much work....will it??.....:D

My snowblower modified with whirling acetylene torches will handle both snow and leaves.
There's also this option: http://www.livejournal.com/users/unclebrady/2005/11/13/
"There's probably some sort of "crazy shenanigans" law out there..."
DISCLAIMER: MORC does not condone the use of flamethrowers for trail maintenance.

Huge thanks for the props Will. That is one dedicated trail crew. I'm sorry I couldn't make it out yesterday, what with the babysitting and a Kenwood function. Your statement is the incentive to keep going. They should copy it and mail it out to Minneapolis residents, park board and naysayers.

It felt really good to see the sun coming out as we were leaving the final trail session of the year, and so many folks and families enjoying the trail on such a nice fall day.
There are so many people who gave their time and effort to make these trails as good as they are - thanks to all of you!
As I walked the system looking for the raking crew yesterday, I was quite impressed at what great shape the system is in at the moment - an obvious result of the loving attention everyone has given the trails over the last two years.
I have to single out Mara Larson, who has been a quiet - but driving force on the trails. She has demonstrated amazing dedication to the effort in an unassuming manner - and in my view is one of the vital anchors in the MOCA organization. She leads trail building/mainenance, is MOCA's VP and recently took a Board position with MORC.
Thanks for all your hard work Mara, it was an honor and a joy to work with you yesterday.
BTW - Hurl, if your reading - you owe us a beer for not using machines this year
