At the City of Inver Grove Heights' request, we are going to be calling Salem Hills by its official name, Harmon Park. So, if you hear us using Salem Hills and Harmon Park interchangeably, it's because we're getting used to the "new" name. It should be Harmon Park.
So get out and ride the "new" Harmon Park. It's one of the few places to ride that are legally open all winter. Just make sure the ground is frozen and the ice is thick :)
Now you know.

I've started renaming some of the forum and gallery to reflect this, but as Scott said you might still see it being referenced by either or both names for a while until we get used to the change...

I grew up in W.St.Paul and there is a Harmon park there as well. No mt.bike trail but I have a tough time calling it Harmon park when everything in that part of IGH is called Salem something.:etard:

I drove by the entrance to the park today and the sign reads "Salem Hills Park".
If IGH wants it called something different, a good place to start would probably be with their sign.:etard:

hmm one would think so...
As I understand it, that part of the area, the tennis courts south to the old fenceline south of the tree farm and from the school west to the culdesac is all Salem Hills park and has been for quite a while.
All of the land where we have built Trails south of the old fenceline was in private hands until about 15 or so years ago when it was deeded of to the city from the Harmon Family. I also met another owner of a lot of the property Shingeldecker, last summer when we were out working on the trail.
He said he had grown up in a house in the park but left when his family had sold the land to the Harmons. He had to have been at least 90 years old.
I am guessing that the Trailhead sign will have some type of info on it giving the history of the land and the name and such.... at least I would like it to.

So I had another meeting with Inver Grove Heights today and among other things, got the dirt on the park name.
The developed portion of the park is Salem Hills Park, and the undeveloped land that the mountain bike trail is on is Harmon Park reserve. Apparently, the Harmon family donated their homestead/farm to the city at some time, thus two parks, one great trailhead, and ample confusion.
The trail is within Harmon Park. The parking lot is Salem Hills Park.
Now you know.

Considering the ruffians that frequent the place, henceforth, I declare it be called Harlem. :)

.... so I was talking up this trail to some new riders, and can we change the title/name in the "Trail Guide" section, or at least put "Salem Hills" in parenthesis next to Harmon Park, so that when we send people to the MORC site to look for Salem Hills, they don't get totally confused??

I have lost track now what the official name is and/or what the land manager wants us to use and how they want it displayed.
Referencing both makes sense, I just want to be sure I have the right one listed first.

I just stomped on the pond, and I can assure everyone that the ice isn't safe enough to ride on.;)

Last I heard it was officially Salem Hills. That was in the spring though. Maybe they changed it back and forth a few times since then....:)
