There will be 12 hunting days: Monday, Tuesday, Wed October 31 through November 23. Hunting is from 1/2 before sunrise until noon. The parking lot is normally closed during this period and its always a good idea to leave a little time for the hunters to vacate the trail before riding. Signs will be posted at the trailhead.
Managing the deer population in Dakota County parks by using controlled hunts is a strategy that has been in place since 1995. Control of deer populations creates ecological conditions conducive to forest succession and natural reforestation and reduces damage to nearby agricultural crops and landscaping. Lower deer populations also improve the Parks’ habitat for other wildlife that benefit from diverse ground and shrub layer plants. Reducing the numbers of deer-car collisions near the Parks, and preventing the potential spread of deer-borne diseases, are additional reasons for controlling deer numbers within the Parks.
