thing that goes over the crank(obviously i dont know terms very well). It takes a 9/16 allen head and it needs to be removed to use a crank-puller. I was bikin and i thought something felt weird but i didnt pay attetion until about a 1/4 mile later and i looked and that was comin loose but i only had a little ways to go and when i was a bout halway home from there i checked and it was still there but when i got home it was gone. I walked the whole stretch of road....twice. So i'm kinda bummed and pissed that i didnt decide to walk:mad:

any LBS will have crank bolts in their shop for sale. At most, they'll be about $2.

Alex, When you get it replaced, also get yourself a set of Metric Allen wrenches. Unless you have a department store bike, most of the Allen heads on your bike will be Metric. Using standard may work but you're eventually going to round off the heads or your wrenches.
And speaking of 9/16- that's huge for an allen screw. Are you sure it's not a bolt with a 14mm hex head?
Good luck with the replacement search. Post a pic when you find the part, so we all now what it was that you actually lost. :)

I don't think they are even necessary. I left them off all my bikes and have never had a problem. They are kinda like presta stem nuts and caps. Useless as far as I can see.

i realized that i have been posting the wrong size allen head....its a 5/16 not a 9/16...must have been dyslexic for a bit

Actually it is an 8mm. 5/16 equals out to 7.9375 millimeters so it is pretty close but some of the other standard to metric sizes are not quite as close and can strip out your bolts.
Pick up a set of metric allen wrenches if you find some spare change.

Are you talking about the dust cap for the crank or that actual bolt?

I was thinking along the same lines. I am pretty sure the bolt is very needed.
