My rear hub (shimano M525 disc) was just rebuilt. When I coast the chain slacks up slightly before the freewheel kicks in. If my feet leave the pedals they continue to spin with the wheel. What do I need to adjust to make the freewheel engage properly? Could things just be tightened down too much?

Any advice would be useful. Thanks.

Do you have a spoke protector on the hub? Sometimes when you tighten down the cassette it pinches agains that plastic wheel and causes the cassette to get jammed up. Also you might want to check out you're freehub body. I have fixed the problem at times by shooting some Finish Line Cross Counrty lube into the body to loosen things up a bit. Could be a faulty freehub if the hub is fairly new. Hope it goes well. cheers

I wonder if they just packed a little to much grease into your freehub and it needs some time to break in.

I'd just take it back to the shop that serviced it and say "...make it work..." A reasonable request.

Which would be the wrong thing to do. You don't use grease in a freehub, and if the shop did they should fix it for free.

A heavy oil is the proper type of lube for freehub bearings. They don't do anything unless you're coasting.

Not always. I've had great success for many years using this tool:

Started out beta testing a winter grease that he has created for tough cold temps like those here in Minnesota.

Im with Scott on this one. Ive been using Phill Wood grease in my Freehubs for winter bikes for years and they work great.

Damn it couldn't be that simple. Let's think of something else. Have you tried cracking an egg and letting it settle on the hub? Err wait that's if you have a leaky radiator.
