THIS EVENT WILL NOW BE HELD AT HILLSIDE PARK IN ELK RIVER. SAME DATE, TIMES, ETC..
This will be a great easy going event -be sure to make every effort to attend and bring racers. I think this is THE LAST MTB RACE IN MN for the 2005 season! Finish you season with us on October 1st. Awards go FIVE places deep in each class. Plenty of SWAG! No Ski Hills in sight - so enjoy a wooded single track trail.

Note that there is a trailwork day on Saturday 9/17to prep the trails for the race - we will meet in the parking lot at 9am - we need many hands so please consider pitching in.
Contact me at JC147@comcast.net for more details or www.bikeblast.com (http://www.bikeblast.com/)

Hi,

Can you give everyone some more information, like what the course is like...length, hills, single track? Will there be classes or one large one? How many entrants do you anticipate? Can one pre-ride the course?

Looking forward to this! Mat:banana:

for more details or www.bikeblast.com (http://www.bikeblast.com)

I get an error message of page cannot be displayed with that link. Sounds like fun though, I've only done the 12 and 24 hour races, this would be a good change!

Hi,

Can you give everyone some more information, like what the course is like...length, hills, single track? Will there be classes or one large one? How many entrants do you anticipate? Can one pre-ride the course?

Looking forward to this! Mat:banana:

THe couse is a great blend of single track and some double track sections to allow passing. The nice thing about this course is that one loop is about 10 miles in length. There are plenty of small hills but for the most part it is rolling terrain - so your average speed will be fairly high making the loops(s) go quickly.

There will be mutiple classes, including enduro for those that want to put in some high mileage. Enduro is a unique feature of the blast races.

Yes, the trail will be open to pre-riding, you just need to pay the Ycamp at the paybox in the parking lot a nominal fee. I would suggest preriding the week before - but not prior to September 25 as we will still be marking the course. The course has some great winding sections, a few log piles, switch backs, etc.. but nothing that an average rider will have any trouble cleaning.

Blast events are the essence of mountian bike racing in that they are a bit more laid back, family oriented, and more approachable for beginner and sport riders who may be challenged by some of the technical and or elevation challenges in the MNSCS.

There will be plenty of prizes, swag, and pottery awards for age class winners. Note that pottery awards go five places deep in each age class.

The good folks at Erik's bike and Park tools donated some great items - Jerseys, gift cards, many park tool items, etc....

Be sure to spread the word and bring riders.

I love racing on this course. It's beautiful in the fall. Wish I could make the race but it wont happen, sister is getting married that day. A few years ago when the Boo Blast at Manitou that same sister and my dad did the race with me! Very Cool!

If ya got a chance to head out there I'd highly recommend it!

...how many racers we will have. This course has not been raced for a few years and it is late in the season some people may have already started thier off-season -- but we hope to get 100 racers. That is in all classes though. The more the merrier as we have plenty of swag, awards, and the course will benefit from some riding.

If a person is seeking to get in the top five of thier age class - this is the event to do it as we wont have many racers. We really hope to reclaim this trail as it had been abandoned.

I don't think we really have a map. I was just thinking about this tonight. Each lap is 10 miles so beginner is 1 lap, sport 2 laps. Depends on what shape you are in, the last part of each lap is killer singletrack.

Yeah, those enduro guys are nutz, so are the pros. I'd have to go SLOW to do 4 full laps. Just 1 lap tonight sent me home tired.

I could probably hang for two laps(plus I got 12 days to prepare)- but like I said I have never raced- I think I work that weekend but I think I can change my schedule and make it work-

Also- Panman- I saw you were the trailboss for Hillside- I love it there! Is the course at Manitou similar to Hillside at all?? There is no description in the trails section

If you think you can do it great, go for it. I honestly think most people could, it's just they go to fast right out of the gun. Take it easy the first lap, let everyone pass you, you'll be passing them at the end. :D Also, eat a ok breakfast and bring some energy bars. Eat them during the race and drink water, that is the key. Some people who go that far bonk because they just run out of energy, I know. LOL

Its singletrack at the end?? Does this make last minute passes difficult?

Yes, the last 4-5 miles are singletrack. Passing will be tricky then but most people let you go by if you ask. The last part of singletrack is kinda wide too. There will also be about 200 yards of road before the finish for passing, up-hill though.

Incredible! If I can make the work end of it happen I think I am going to give it a shot.

Thanks for all of the info-

one last thing- do you have directions out there? I need to ride it quite a few times to familiarize myself with it- also is there going to be more trailwork done before then?? (oops- I just saw that other post)

You bet, a map to the trail can be found at the BLAST site (http://www.bikeblast.com/BlastMonticelloMap.htm). Basicly, exit the freeway (94) at exit 193, go south and take a right at the Ford dealer. Go about 5 miles down that road (it gets kinda narrow, no sholders). When you go around a sharp corner and past a green house, take the next right atop the next hill, 1/2 mile. Go around the lake and after it take the second right, there'll be signs for Camp Manitou. Park at the sign on the left there.

At this point you might get lost, in fact I'll guarantee it. Overgrowth covered up some signs and I even missed a turn today. I'd wait until next weekend to ride, I should have the signage up by then. Train at Hillside (http://www.bikeblast.com/BlastElkRiverMap.htm) for now. ;)

I'll be working on the trail all week but next weekend we have scheduled emergency trailwork (http://www.morcmtb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14778). A lot needs to be cleaned up for the race. If you can help that would be great!

What sort of ss gearing would you run on that course? How long does a lap take, on average, for the not twenty year old folks? :D

TML

Mara,

For the majority of the course 2:1 would be great. I did a 3 lap race there years ago when it was only 8 miles long and I ran 36:17. The other two miles that were added were significantly more hilly though (similar to Hillside).

Wish I could help out at some of the trail work sessions here. It's just not working out though. Sorry Ryan :cryin:.

Well, it's not looking good for the Monti race. Possible change to Hillside for the race. Everything would stay the same, just location change. Start times can be found on the flyer (http://www.bikeblast.com/BlastEvents.htm).

Well, with the change of location, I think I might have to participate in this one! Not that I don't like the YCamp Monticello trails, it's just that I've never ridden there. But I have ridden Hillside, and I like those trails, passing will be a challenge, but it should be a fun time.

Plus, this will be my first race in about tens years that I won't be eligible to race in the "rock crusher" class. :D

Race location changed! I'm sure most heard this already (I'm late) but the Fall Trail Benefit Race has been moved to Hillside. This was decided after we discovered there was just too much work at Camp Manitou to get it in racing shape. Everything stayed the same, times and such but just the location changed. See the event flyer.
