The 12th annual Copper Harbor Fat Tire Festival (U.P. Michigan) will be this Sunday, September 4 (Labor Day Weekend). The 12 & 20 mile (actually 13 & 21) XC races will begin with a Copper Harbor style 2:00pm (Eastern Time) start. Don't let the distances fool you as this is the most techincally demanding race course in the Midwest. It includes long grueling climbs and steep technical decents. This includes a 3 mile white knuckle descent down the Red Trail & Paul's Plunge back to Lake Superior level over bedrock, cobbled rock, hardpack, roots and bridges. There is really no sand up here and is nothing like the O2S!

Not part of any point series with no major prize money at stake, the Fat Tire Festival is intended to be a fun race and a good time and typically attracts racers from all over the U.P., Wisconsin and beyond. It is a true festival by the defination of the word. A post-race cookout, awards and prizes, local brews from the Keweenaw Brewing Company and some awesome live music by MQT based Chasin' Steel (bluegrass) and Appleton based Mojo Perry Band (blues/rock) are included for all racers along with a very cool race T-shirt now for only $40. All of the proceeds go directly to benefit mountain biking in Copper Harbor and Keweenaw County.

Registration is at the Copper Harbor Community Building from 3:00-5:00 on Saturday and 11:00-1:00 on Sunday.

The Jr. Fat Tire, Kids Race will be on SundAY @ 12:30.

A free preview ride will be at 5:30 on Saturday, whether racing or not, and will meet at Keweenaw Adventure Company in "downtown" Copper Harbor.

This is a great race with a great vibe! I'd encourage anyone to give it a shot as well. Like Lori said, that run downhill back into town is truly phenomenal. It'll give your handling skills and technical abilities a run for their money!

I'll be up in Ontonagon this weekend but don't know if I'm going to be able to make the race this year. Looks like family plans may take priority on Sunday.
