ok i am sure alot of you saw my other post. ya i was a little freaked out when i took a test lap on monday and the trail kicked my butt. as some of you stated just walk the sketchy parts which i did the first lap and hit most my second. i did a lot of walking on the 7 laps i did mostly becuase the hills kept getting bigger and bigger.

just wanted to say thanks for building such a fun and Challenging course.

i might not have been the fastest person out at Afton but i was having a lot of fun.

also a big thanks to the Morc crew and all the people that i do not know who kept me going when climbing the big hills. it was nice to see so many people racing against eachother cheering them on and building them up.

it was one hell of a first race but worth it.

i need to crash out!

I agree with Earthmen. 2 weeks ago, when I did my first preride, I was thinking "WTF, what kind of sick and twisted mind makes a course this stupid." Then, 1 week ago, when I did my next preride, I was thinking "Hey, this course isn't so bad. It's insanly tough but some parts are kind of fun." Then, when the race started, I crashed twice in the first 2 laps but after that, I kind of settled in and it was a sweet course. (Actually, towards the end, I started to hate the course, but I think that I would start hating any course after 19 laps.)

I think that maybe my earlier dislike of the course was a result of my being stuck in Northfield without a car for most of the summer. There is nothing in Northfield excepth road biking (and my summer job). Thus, 95% of my training was on roads and I probably lost a lot of my mtb skills and afton was definitly a mtb course. As my skills came back, the course became a lot more fun.

Thanks to everybody that helped work on the course and organized the race. And thanks to all the volunteers. That was a sweet race on a sweet course.

I had a great time too. I really liked the course. I tried the log ramp three times on friday but I couldn't make it up because my tires were all wet. I tried the "easier routes" and found that the harder routes were more fun because they were as always technical and fast. Good job on the trail work during the race too. That's a lot of trail to watch and take care with all that traffic going by. I saw a few places that were having some problems and by the time I came by an hour later they were all fixed. It was kind of tough riding on the course because it was a bit muddy and the whole time I have this thought about ridding on muddy trails. I was feeling a bit guilty about it but the trails held up amazingly well. I was surprised at how fast they dried up.

I did pretty good considering I only spent 16 hours on the trail. I went to bed after 5 laps at around 11pm and went back at it about 6am and got another 9 laps in. I think I was actually faster the second day. I was a bit tired and falling asleep so I opted for the nap instead of riding though mud at night while trying to stay awake. There's always next year and 14 laps in 16 hours isn't bad at all especially with bruised ribbs, being off my bike for two months and what not. I'm pretty happy. I'm feeling pretty good today. I'm a wee bit sore but not so sore I cant go riding at Writh today.

It's funny how it works for me out there every year. I get all nervous at the beginning and just start going trying to keep my lap times around an hour. Then I have that 5th lap that takes about a half hour longer and I'm done for a while. Then I start going again and by 10am I'm a bit tired but on my 2nd wind and I realize why I keep coming back every year. I love to ride my mountain bike down those sections in the trees and the last mile after the man handler on the way to the gate. It's a blast. That's what it's all about.

As always all the event staff did a great job. All the volunteers, racers and support people have put this race at the top of my list and a must return to year after year. I'll be there again next year riding solo then I'm going to go for the team thing after that so I can chill, drink beer, meet people and talk smack. You really don't get to do any of that stuff if you're riding solo.

Congrats to everyone that raced this year! Great turnout and looked like everyone had a lot of fun. Shawn, ya looked pretty comfortable out there even with the sore body. David, all I can say is that was a kick ass sweet way to begin and end your 1st 24 hour race, way to go man :banana::banana:. Next year i think i'll be back to riding, 2 seasons off has been enough for me.

D

Oh yeah, a BIG thanks to John Reents (sp) and Afton for allowing us to put this on, and another big thanks to Troy S and gang for all the great work they did on the trail prior to and during the race.

ya the funny thing is i was more freaked on when starting the race yesterday then i had ever been before, since i have only biked wirth and the trails going to it. i thought for sure i was going to run 2 hour laps and mess my self up bad but instead i was running 1,20 laps and i went out to wirth today ate it and cut my leg up.

but overall i think i did good for it being my first year moutain biking, and my first year going over rocks and sketchy stuff since " the fall "l 13 years ago.

i am still freaked out by rocks but if " Jitterjepp" keeps making me go over them i will get over it real quick.

If you were able to ride today, you didn't push yourself hard enough yesterday.;)

I'm still having trouble walking up and down stairs. Just getting dressed this morning was a challenge. As the day has progressed, I've loosened up a little, so now I can lift my arms above my head. I probably won't be back on the bike until at least Tuesday.

ya one painfully slow lap at wirth does not count as biking.
but ya i could have pushed my self harder but i had to drive my self home.
and i just did not feel like it.

i will try my best next year to give you a run for your money, but next year if i find you asleep on the trail i will stop and make a go around and just let you sleep :)

I hear ya there. I was pretty worthless on sunday. I really didnt hurt too much, I was just completely wiped! :D

The race was a blast though. I will have to say, after the first lap I was thinking, "Grrreat, I'll be putting in about 6 more of these and arent those techy sections going to be fun at night". And to my surprise they WERE actually a lot of fun at night.

Much thanks to Troy and Larry and all the others who worked on the trails and to all the volunteers who helped make the race possible. It was definitely worth riding. My first 24hrs on Afton is in the bag!

On a side note: Nice job team FACELESS and Matt, thanks for the pint glass.:crazy2:

I really helps.

I think Josh and I were talking to you at the bottom of the stairs about MT. Kato while we were waiting for registration to start but I'm not sure if that was you. You did an awsome job out there.

Shawn were you riding a dark red 29er, I remember someone saying you were a 5'7" guy on a 29er. As for the race, I was drinking recovery stuff but no advil during. I was pooped on sunday. Ha ha ha! Good race guys, see ya on the trails.

Yeah that was me. And yeah I was taking Advil. I also did take a recovery drink but not until later in the evening when I got home. I probably should have gotten that right away.

Amazing fun says it well...but I think we need to work pain into that phrase somehow. All in all, a good way to spend a day!!
