I've got an Avid Mechanical Disc brake on the front of my 05 Hardrock Sport. It is a 185mm rotor, and thier higher-end caliper. I've noticed that around some corners, or when I stand, there is a metal on metal typre sound coming from the brake. Also, I only notice the noice when I am riding the paved trails by my house. That said, it is sure possible that I just don't notice it off-road because that isn't what I am thinking about. It seems to be when the fork would be under side-ways tourque, if that is even possible.
Any ideas what I could check out? I am aware that the pads are metal, but this doesn't just sound like a noisy pad/rotor.

mine do the same thing. I think it's just fork flex messing with things.
I think putting up with additional noise is all part of running disc brakes. You could try tightening down your skewer, sometimes that helps.
It's just rotor "ching". Nothing bad, means you got your pads nice and tight in close to the rotors. My 203's do it all the time on the road as well. I never notice it on the trail either. I think it has something to do with the vibration induced in the wheel and rotor by the knobbys on the pavement. You will get more of it if you don't have a 20mm axle fork too, cuz the fork will flex more in turns. You could dial the pads away from the rotors to lessen the chinging, but then you'll have more slop in you lever pull (ew!). The other thing to do is check your rotors and make sure they are straight too, they can be trued up carefully with a long allen key, screw driver, or other slim handled tool, just pry carefully.

Double ew! I'll just deal with the noise. I bought disks for the nicer feel, we don't need to ruin that now...
Thanks for letting me know its normal, I was thinking I had set them up wrong. Now I can just ride!

Go back to the old fashioned V-Brakes. Ahhh... being trendy isn't what it used to be.

How about I put those on too, and have a two-brake system? I still get the trendiness of the discs, but then I also get the sponginess of the Vs... :D
